    Default Cat health question....

I'm worried about Gabby. You knw the thick tear ducts things cats have? Well Gabby's are irritated or something. You cant usually see them at all but now they are visible and her eyes look weird. They aren't really watering and Ive been checking her nose to see if its running and it isn't. She seems healthy otherwise - normal eating/bathroom/play habits but her eyes look weird and I'm worried somethings wrong. The only thing I can think of is that I changed her litter and maybe the dust from it is irritating them? Any ideas and is it something to worry about? Maybe a warm wash cloth? Do I need to take her to the vet?

You can actually see a piece of tissue coming out of her eye?

If so, that is called entropion and it does require a vet visit. Possibly surgery as well.

It happens a lot when the lashes(usually the bottom lashes) turn inward and irritate the eye)

If you can post a pic, I might be able to give you a better idea.

is there matter coming out of the eye? Some cats have what I call eye bugars. In fact my cat has them regularly, she's not sick. It's just goo the eye secretes.

Okay this is the best picture I could get because she's really hyper right now. Sorry about the red-eye. But see the piece of skin or whatever in the inner corner of her eye? Its like that on both eyes.

Update - my dial up is too slow it wont load. I'mma keep trying. Cameron if you pm me your number can I txt it to you?

Okay, I sent it! the whole inner corner of her eye is that duct thing. In the picture it kind of just looks like the white of her eye but its not.

It was pretty blurry...but she needs to go to the vet. If it isnt entropian it may be a small ulcer(conjuctivitis)...in any case. She needs a vet

Are vets in the habit by chance of accepting payment plans? I won't get my first paycheck for two weeks. It's like that on both eyes.

Has she been to a vet since you've had her? If so...call and tell them whats going on. They may accept a post dated check or you can apply for care credit. Or it may be something simple that wont be that expensive.

This is why it pays to be on good terms with your vet. I know being on fantastic terms with my vet has paid dividends for my flatmate who isn't as "in the money" as me and thus sometimes owes for vet visits in re his diabetic cat.

Also, what type of kitty litter are you using? I highly recommend something along the lines of pellets.

If you can't get to a vet right away, you can trying gently washing the eye with a washcloth soaked in warm water. No soap, of course. If you suspect an infection, you can buy an over the counter antibiotic called Terramycin which you can apply to the infected eye. It costs about $12 for a small tube. I just bought some at the Farmer's Store and put it on my cat's paw which was infected after a cat fight, and it cleared it up.

The only thing that has changed is her cat litter and I had been buying the 9 lives scoopable kind that was kind of dusty before and I switched to like crystal things that were more expensive and this started. Shes been sneezing too. I changed my air conditioner filters, vaccumed, and scrubbed out her litter box and put the old kind in. I have a little kitty first aid kit that had a thermometer, tummy medicine, eye drops, etc. She let me take her temperature and it was 100.3. The chart said it should be between 100-102, so no fever. I've been putting one drop in each eye every four hours and listening to her breathing to make sure its not congesty sounding and her eyes look a little bit better. If she seems sick tomorrow I will try to borrow money from someone until I get paid to take her to the vet, but she's chasing her jingle mouse around like crazy right now and scarfing down food and her eyes look better so hopefully it was just the new cat litter irritating her.

Thank you guys so much for your advice! I will update!

It looks like her reaction was due to the kitty litter....

Hmm. So its been like four days and she still looks weird and I dont know if I'm being paranoid but it seems like she's acting funny. I'm going to go pawn my jewelry box and cd player. She has a vet appointment at 2:15 today.

I hope your cat feels better! I know how worrisome it can be when you think something is wrong. I JUST took my cat to the vet yesterday for sores on her chin. It turned out to be cat acne (weird, I know), but for the $34 it cost me, it was sure worth my cat's health as well as my piece of mind... I have enough anxiety as it is!

I hope it's not anything serious. My cat had what looked like a cyst near one of his tear ducts months ago. The vet said it was either cancer (and they'd have to biopsy it, which would've cost me close to a grand) or he accidentally scratched his eye because his ear was itchy. They gave me some ear drops & he's fine now.
I've got my fingers crossed that it was just an irritation from the new litter.

I pawned stuff and took her to the vet! They said it was either a slight respiratory infection or allergies or a resp. infection caused by allergies.....but they gave her a shot for the allergies and antibiodics to give her for any infection that might be lingering and ointment for her eyes. But no fever, and no weight loss, so they said it should be fine in a few days. THanks for all your good thoughts, I'll let you know how she's doing!

Glad to hear she's ok. And what a GOOD kitty mommy you are to pawn stuff to make sure she is healthy.

You are so wonderful to hock your stuff to take your kitty to the vet. I'm glad she is OK. Now be sure to pay it off before the month is up. Back when I was hocking things, I think I bought back my trombone twice.
