    Default wireless problems

Ok..I cant take it anymore. I have a wireless thing that allows me to have wireless internet on my laptop through my home modem.

All of a sudden it doesnt work. No idea why. Cant connect to ANY wireless network(not even my neighbors who keep theirs unlocked and I used to use before I got my own).

    I defragged. Still doesnt work.

    Arrrrggggg....I hate PC'S!!!!!!!

    Anyone?? Anyone??? Bueller??? Bueller????

Can anyone help? I miss being lazy and lying in bed with my SW

Alas restarting the computer fixes 90% of computer problems. Have you tried that?

    Is the wired connection working?

Powercycle your system. Turn off everything attatched, all computers, all routers and modems. Then unplug the modem/router from power for at least 30 seconds. Plug it back in and restart the computer.
Powercycling the system fixes the problem 99% of the time.

Contact your ISP if it continues to malfuntion. You may be getting a bad IP address.

Ok he said that since the modem on the main computer works..this isnt the problem. Thats it has to be something with the laptops software.

    Now what?

On the laptop, (assuming you're running Windows OS) go to
Control Panel/Network Connections/Local Area Connection or Wireless Connection/Support
Under the support tab, check your IP address. If you have an IP address that starts with 169.xxx.xxx.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx whatever, you need to call your ISP. If it starts with 192.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, you may just have a bad signal, and need to wait. Either way, your ISP can ping your modem, check your signals and see what's going on. They may even help with a software problem, if that's what's causing the issue.

I'm out. I used to work in internet tech support, but I never branched into the home networking area. I stuck to one modem-one computer-no router, and eventually I became a manager in that department, but I don't want to fuck up your network, so you should definitely call your ISP.

I am guessing that you have a Linksys switch/router/access point (or something along that line). If you plug a computer into that device with a network cable and the computer gets to the internet, then your ISP connection is fine and the router itself is fine.

The wireless could be getting knocked out by interference. Some cordless phones (as an exampleof one such device) run at the same frequency as wireless standards. This can cause interference and kill the wireless access point (temporarily).

Go to a command prompt and type the following:

    ipconfig

This will show you the basic settings of your wireless network adapter. If the address is 169.x.x.x (as CurlieQ pointed out) then this is an APIPA address. It meand the network adapter tried to find a DHCP server and failed.

If the address starts with any other number (the default is generally 192.x.x.x) then more than likely you are finding the DHCP server (this server would be the Linksys device).

Another command to try would be:

    ipconfig /renew

This will attempt to renew your ip address from the DHCP server. If it comes back 169.x.x.x then it did not find the DHCP server and thus did not find the access point.

My money is on something causing interference from time to time.

There are quite a few other commands for troubleshooting network/device issues but what I have here should help you pinpoint where the problem lies.

    ^Actually, you would want to

Start> Run> Type cmd in the box to get to your command prompt.

type 'ipconfig /release' to let go of the address.

Type 'ipconfig /renew' to obtain a new IP address (whether or not the computer is holding a current address).

    ^^^
The release command is useful for some things, but it is not required in this situation. The renew will attempt to find the server.

    Don't feel stupid.

Click START >>> RUN and when the run line comes up type "cmd" (without the quotes)

That black screen doesn't mean it's dead, that's the command prompt! It looks like this:

type 'ipconfig /release' to let go of the address.

Type 'ipconfig /renew' to obtain a new IP address (whether or not the computer is holding a current address).

Unplug the Linksys device for a minute and then plug it back in.

Once that is done then reboot your laptop.
