Default Best place to live in Northern California??

After the bf and I get back from Europe, we're going to move into a place together, and the only area we'd want to be is northern california (san francisco and up). I want to be in a town that's not extremely metropolitan, but nearby a city/lots of action. I don't want to necessarily live in a really suburban place either. It needs to be in an area where there's lots of lucrative clubs, as well as a community college or university where I can finish my degree. We were looking at Arcata (humboldt state uni.) and the area directly north of san fran, although I don't know what any of those towns are like. I hear Santa cruz is nice too... help. anyone?

I would not recommend California for anything other than a vacation right now. That place is about to get leveled by a financial earthquake.

California clubs lucrative? As I've heard, not exactly. Plus we're going through a lot of foreclosures and bankruptcies.

From a living perspective, The Santa Rosa area is nice.

California is broke. People are fleeing like rats from the Titanic; taxes and the cost of living are impossible to keep up with, and it still isn't enough to support the infrastructure. There is very little remaining middle class, so if you're not already quite wealthy, then plan on being broke. And as far as I know, there are no lucrative clubs in California, unless you count the whorehouses (and even they are slipping).

Humboldt is beautiful but I wouldn't say there are "lots of lucrative clubs" up there. Plan on being tipped in pot if you go up that way, LOL. Santa Cruz doesn't have much in the way of strip clubs either, and UCSC is pretty tough to get into, though it is beautiful there. NorCal is really pretty, but I'm with Deogol - I wouldn't recommend California for anything but a vacation.

What exactly about NorCal appeals to you? Maybe we could help you find someplace similar where you could live better.

California is appealing because I've lived on the east coast my whole life and have no desire to live there, I lived in portland for half a year and loved it until it got cold and rainy and sad... so I'd like to stay living on the west coast, but someplace warmer- hence northern california. I want to live in a place that is progressive, eco-friendly, lots of outdoorsy types of people and places to go to, big music scene, etc. Portland is perfect but I just can't handle the cold!!!!

IDK, maybe we'll move back to portland and just deal with it, but nor. cal is a lot more appealing to me (from what I have seen driving to SF and back twice, it's absolutely gorgeous)

It can't be as rainy and grey as Portland though, or is it? I was under the impression that while it's cold in Northern california, it doesn't rain as much or get that dark depressing gloom that seattle and portland tend to get.

    You want Austin, Texas.

Yea, pick your jaw up off the floor. I know what most of the world pictures Texas as.

Texas is a leader in green energy (remember Chevron/Mobil is based in California - CA is an oil state!), Austin is "The Live Music Capital Of The World" (not to mention a lot more movies being made there these days.) The mountains of Colorado are a days drive away. The ocean beaches are half a day's drive (and the water is WARM to boot!) You haven't partied until you've gone camping at the Texas Ren Fest. Austin is filled with ex-Silicon Valley types (I was one!)

I have lived all over the country and the only place I wanted to make home was Austin.

Thanks a fucking lot, that's how the traffic got so bad there in the first place. Don't listen to him, everyone knows Austin is full of rednecks and guns, and also you have to give head to make money there. Go to Asheville or something.

Deogol's right, you want Austin. Although I don't know how the strip club scene is there and I've heard Texas is pretty high mileage. And yeah, NorCal gets really cold and rainy - up around Humboldt it snows a lot. Mark Twain once said, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco," and I myself have spent several summer days running around San Francisco in a jacket.

I love the same culture as you, so looking forward to the Portland move, but then I love cold weather. I've been to Austin and really loved the culture there, but it was too hot for me. My best friend is from California and she's a total west-coast hippie chick (a professional artist), and she's getting ready to move to Austin, though she's also considering Raleigh, NC and Tampa, FL.

Susan- I prefer not to drive at all if possible because I hate cars, so I wouldn't add to the traffic problem by moving there, and if it's not bike-friendly with good public transit it's not a place i'd like to be anyways.

Yek- your friend is considering moving to Tampa?? That's where I spent my freshman year of college, I didn't really like it. You have to drive everywhere, the traffic is really bad and so is the crime rate (at least in the area I was). There are a few pockets of chill people and places to hang out, like anywhere- but over all it was too concrete jungle for me.

I hear Asheville is really nice... going to do research on that.

I don't have time for a real post on the topic but I had to interject... NorCal rocks in a lot of ways. I was from the east coast when I moved there. And I've been to Austin too. To me it didn't really measure up, although it was a very cool place. C'mon. Austin vs. San Francisco? And at least as far as rock/hard rock goes, the norcal music scene is as good or better. One thing to keep in mind is that Norcal has three cities (SF, SJ, OK) within a short drive.

As far as where in Norcal, for living in a cool city, SF. For beauty, there are a million places. Santa Cruz is gorgeous, UC Santa Cruz was like some city out of a fairy tale, I was expecting elves to walk out any minute. Berkeley is also an interesting place to live.

Norcal weather is amazing and awesome. 280 SJ<->SF is the most beautiful major highway drive I've ever been on, and I was lucky enough to be on it a lot, in convertibles.

Just had to stick up for my old haunts...

Maybe this should be renamed "Best Places to Live in The Bay Area." There's way more to true NorCal than SF,SJ, and OK.

I grew up in the Bay Area and I absolutely adore it there! I grew up in San Jose, but have lived all over the Bay.

However, I just spend the past week and half there for the Holidays and it has changed A LOT!

As far as dancing there and being able to afford going to school? Good Luck!

I love SF and the Los Altos Hills but I could never afford to live there now. I would suggest the East Bay, like Pleasanton and San Ramon. It's only about 20 minutes away from Berkeley and SF, BART runs through there as well, making commuting more convenient. The hills are beautiful and it's not as over developed (yet) as other places in the Bay.

As far as dancing, the no contact clubs are in the South Bay and I'm not sure you could live on what you could make there ( although I know some girls that do well ). Otherwise, there's SF but if you're not comfortable with contact it might not be for you.

Further North of SF there are not many clubs and most girls that live up there commute to SF to work.

I agree with you that NorCal is one of the most beautiful places in the world. I miss it very much and would love to move back one day after I've made my millions

In the mean time I'm fortunate that I have a lot of friends and family in the area so I get to visit often.

    ^ Good recommendations.

I went back for a 10 day vacation & my heart misses my home deeply. But I could never be happy scraping by financially like I did growing up in northern California.

IF you're willing to commute, you can live cheaply in the outer South Bay. The money in stripping is in private parties, not club money.

There are plenty of great colleges in NorCal but they got hit hard by state budget cutbacks, so fees are high.

Enjoy NorCal, & learn how to pennypinch.

Eureka, Arcata, Crescent City... That area is colder and rainier than Portland. Also, in the middle of summer, it can be blustery, chilly, foggy; need a coat or sweater in July. Go inland to get away from that.

The farther down you go in California the more expensive and sunny it gets.

Having lived in both Norcal and Socal I like Socal more for the weather. The cost of living jump I took eh not so good. Financially speaking and in some parts culturally and spiritually speaking were screwed up the wah-zoo. However, if you live in a lesser populated area (or smaller suburb) and enjoy the little beauties all around you, you will be able to enjoy it here.

You would like Santa Cruz. I lived there for a while. It's mellow, health conscious, warm, on the beach, pretty good restaurants and one of the best community colleges in the country, Cabrillo.

You'd probably commute to San Francisco if you wanted to strip, but it's a short drive - oh wait, you said you don't drive...well I don't know about that.

It's crazy expensive though. I mean, very.

And some landlords only rent to students - be ready for that.
