It's more of an east coast thing. Doesn't exist so much out here, which is a dman shame. You haven't lived until you've had a perogie.

It is a pasta shell, lieke a ravioli, only it is filled with mashed potatoes usually, although you can put all kinds of stuff in them.. heaven. a tiny peice of heaven. You eat them smothered in butter and onions usually.

You can boil them, fry them, deep fry them, or as I recently discovered, grill them!

Vareniki! They're called Vareniki people! j/k. They are referred to as pierogies in Poland, and maybe a few parts of Western Ukraine. And they are fucking amazing!

My fave is potato filled, grilled with a few onions. Then I sprinkle sea salt and black pepper on them, and eat them with ketchup and sour cream. Gross, huh? Love it!

Now I have to get some....

    Izapuppyrightthar!

Here I thought pierogies did not exist outside of Pittsburgh. I prefer them boiled, then fried with butter and onion.

They are very very difficult and time consumign to make homemade.

Store bought are called Mrs. T's and although they are good...it's no comparison to homemade. If yrou in the east coast, like Ohip or Pa, you can find perogie stores, and the catholic churshces sell them homemade during the school year. They sell them every Friday, and they are like,$4 for a dozen or something. and they are AMAZING. if you can buy them from the church..omg. sooo good. These little old ladies sit and make them all day long and they are just to die for. Whenever I go home or my bf goes home, or family comes to visit me, I have them bring me 5 dozen. And that lasts less than a month! I looove pierogies!

    Order online!!!
    from Pittsburgh, Pa.
These are gooood! I've had em!

ohh.. the haluski is good to! I might go make some now....I;m gettin hungry!

My grandmother and I used to make them from scratch. Our version is actually referred to as pelmeni, and they are Siberian in origin. They are a little smaller, and filled with meat. Same concept though. It would take several hours, I recommend getting them pre-made.

Wow! I've never had them grilled. That seems like a neat idea. I usually boil them to keep the calories down.

What kind of grill did you use? Outdoor? George Foreman?

More importantly, what kind were they? -drools-

^ I used an indoor tabletop grill, but not a foreman, the open kind.
And they were just store bought potato and cheese...I boiled them first, grilled them till they had beautiful dak grill marks, and then I put a little metled butter on top. Usually, I like them fried...but this was actually way better. It was like a mix between boiled and fried. Soft in some parts, crispy in others....was delish.

I don't think I'm Polish, but growing up in Pittsburgh..it's a very polish oriented area. I have listened to Polish music and danced Polkas, lol. ( think that's what it's called? it's been awhile...)
    and I looove Polish food!

Mm. I grew up in the Western PA area, about forty minutes outside of Pittsburgh. I dropped my jaw when someone in my dorms at WVU asked what a pierogie was. I was like "WTF only the best food evar?!"

Hell, Pittsburgh Pirates have 'pierogie races' LOL!

Now I really want pierogies. And haluski. OMG polish food is the best.

OMG Yes!!! Where did you live that you went to Ambridge Nationality Days?!? I worked in Ambridge at a couple years back!

On a related note, our boss would cater for holidays, and we always had pierogies.
