    Default word peeve

    Discreet: judicious, careful, confidential, prudent.

If you know when to keep your mouth shut, you are discreet. (And this is, by far, the most common usage on this site.)

    Discrete: Singular, isolated, distinct.

If you focus on one thing out of a bunch of things, then you are picking on a discrete item.

Bugged me for years. Sorry to vent.

That's English - capable of multiple interpretations.

(Even before you Yanks got your hands on it).

But not anything you might want it to be. If you can show me a dictionary where "discrete" means prudent or judicious....

    OK, I'm over it.

I get more annoyed with words pronounced incorrectly... My inlaws say "saposably" and that makes my eye twitch. I have to suppress my urge to blurt out, "it's supposedly, godammit!"

One of my coworkers says, "irregardless"

One of the first things I noticed when I moved to Colorado was the rampant use of, "heighth" It's just height, people.

I initially had the same involuntary response to an ex- who used to say "traumacised" instead of "traumatized." It wasn't a deal breaker though...

    On word peeves...
I shall admit my own guilt.
I have no idea how to use to and too. I use to for everything. No matter how many times my english class corrected me, for some reason, this just will not stick.

    LOL kaylinn!

"to" is used for most purposes. "too" is just used primarily for "me too!"

I get so frustrated with people about words.

"warsh" and "ashphalt" being two that I can think of off the top of my head!

TOO (other than The Other Owner)

In addition; also: He's coming along too.
More than enough; excessively: She worries too much.
To a regrettable degree: My error was all too apparent.
Very; extremely; immensely: He's only too willing to be of service.
Informal Indeed; so: You will too do it!

    too = also

or used as an explination as excess....

I HATE it when people say that they are "itching" when in fact they are scratching the spot that itches.

Part of the problem is that the noun is "discretion," which looks more like the 2nd spelling.

My peeve of the moment (apart from the aforementioned, which were excellent and made my eye twitch): Conversate.

LOL. I say I am itching my scratch all the time! I am just full of bad grammar habits!
And I tend too ( ?) ( I tend too also?) ( is that a double positive? Lmao. I confused!) make up my own words to suit my needs at the time if I can't think of the proper word!
I also tend to? I also tend too? I to, tend to? I too, tend to?

    Fuck it!
I make up my own words as nesessary.
I am boycotting to and too from here on out!

You know, being an English major, I should catch that one myself. Thanks for the heads up.

What I can't stand isn't when I have a word that I've used untold millions of times and I STILL can't spell it right on the first try. Take the word "convenience" for example (and no I didn't get it this time either).

Thank God for the spell check.

Bad grammar and spelling bother me too, but this is one exception I have. To me, well sounds too formal and kind of standoffish/snooty. I dunno, like when someone asks, "how are you?" I never say, "I'm well, thanks" even though that is the correct usage. I always say that I'm doing good. Maybe it's from growing up in the south/country.

Oh god, me to. my word is definitely. I have to use dictionary.com every damn time I care to spell it correctly. I have dictionary.com saved to my favorites ( That's a dumb blonde pretending to be smart! LOL. )
