No health care? Higher fines in Mass.

    BOSTON

The cost of not having health insurance in Massachusetts is going up.
When the new year begins Tuesday, most residents who remain uninsured will face monthly fines that could total as much as $912 for individuals and $1,824 for couples by the end of 2008, according to penalty guidelines unveiled by the Department of Revenue on Monday.
Individuals who failed to sign up for health insurance by the end of 2007 faced only a one-time loss of their $219 personal income tax exemption.
.... The law, intended to create near-universal coverage in the state, was approved by lawmakers and signed by former Gov. Mitt Romney in 2006. It remains unclear how many Massachusetts residents still don't have insurance, but the number could be in the hundreds of thousands.
.... They (fines) accrue each month an individual remains uninsured and will be due as part of tax returns filed early in 2009.
The penalties apply only to adults deemed able to afford health insurance by the Health Insurance Connector Authority, which oversees the health care law. People can apply for hardship appeals...."
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

I guess that is one way to get the unemployed (and other such undesirables) out of the state.

Oh no. Those people will get off scot-free. Its those pesky working-class people who according to the state "can" afford health insurance, but choose not to get it who are the undesirables.

I found this snip rather fascinating:

The fees are based on half the cost of the least expensive insurance plan available to each resident but are capped to avoid excessive fees. Thus, a 60-year-old resident of Boston, who would pay more than $4,600 a year for health insurance provided by the state, could have been hit with a $2,300 penalty. But the maximum possible penalty is $912 for all residents.

In which case, why not just pay the damned fine?

I further read ... "The law, signed by former Gov. Mitt Romney in April 2006, was designed to pressure residents to buy insurance rather than rely on the fact that hospitals must provide care regardless of whether their patients can pay for the services, the paper reported." From MarketWatch.

The fine would be cheaper, unless you NEEDED the insurance. that's what insurance is - lowering average risk but at a cost.

ultimately, this new law's burden falls on small businesses and the people that work for them. I assume that Massachusetts 'strippers' will get hit with this 'tax' ?
