    Default ipod question (windows/mac compatibility)

My sister got an iPod nano for my mom for Christmas. Before giving it to her she put a bunch of Elvis songs, etc on the iPod using her macbook. My mom has a Dell. I'm in charge of loading my mom's cds on the ipod and teaching her how to use it. However, I just realized that since it was already formatted for Macs, the Dell can't read it. Is there a way I can get around this, with third party software or perhaps something very very obvious? Thanks. It's not a huge loss if we just have to reformat it and then add music again (my mom has a lot of Elvis CDs anyway I can just burn for her and put on here), but I'd like to avoid that if possible.

I already considered importing her ipod's contents onto my computer and then burning those onto CD and putting those MP3s on the PC, but I don't have any CDRs and I'm leaving tomorrow.

    Thanks!

It is very hard to get music OFF the iPod. There are third party open source stuff that will do that. I don't know of any for Windows though.

Enh. I talked to my sister and she's fine with my reformatting it. D"oh! Thanks Deogol, that's what I expected.

Man, my mom really should have a Mac. She only uses it to play online games and do email...

If your ripping your cds make sure you rip them without drm, so you can do what you will with the files you rip.

Not really very hard anymore. There are a LOT of user friendly apps that do it, however from a PC master it wont work as the iPod is formatted for mac. Formatting it for PC can enable it for use on both.

So I'd format it, and just reget the elvis cd's and you're golden.

ALSO to do this RIGHT and EASY do the following:

On the system with the Elvis music, format the ipod for windows.
In Itunes 7.5, when the ipod is connected and formatted, enable disk use on it. This will make the ipod show up in your drive list. Open it, and copy the Elvis songs to it.

THEN hook it up to your PC and it should show in "My Computer". Copy the elvis songs OUT of there, into Itunes and BACK into the ipod through syncronization.

Good luck! (you don't have to disable the disk use but you might as well)

There's a free program called Music Rescue that will take all of the music off of your ipod and transfer it to a folder on your computer. I used it when my laptop crashed and was able to at least save the music I had. Try it out, it's a pretty cool program.
