    Default Burning man 2008

I've always wanted to go to BM. I randomly get to see friends pictures and videos from past burns and it is giving me the itch to finally try and make it.

Thing is its always happening during the first week of school. I'll be taking calc 2 in the fall and don't want to miss much. Supposedly tickets go on sale this month.

    What to do? Halpz?

It's always Labor Day weekend, right? I would imagine missing class early is OK in most cases. Hire a tutor for a week or something if you are concerned. I would like to go too but like hotels more than sand.

It starts on August 25th and ends September 1st. Gotta go the whole week...of course.

Hiring a tutor for the week I'm gone to get me all caught up would be great. Missing a whole week of school just scares me.

This festival sounds amazing! I think someday I'll go, but probably not for a few years. Have fun if you can make it!

Do you have a group that you plan to go with already? Make sure they have a damn generator for some AC!

Dude. You do know that it is in summer and its like 107 out in the desert, right ? and you have to camp. There's no hotels or vendors. It looks like it's cool as fuck but as someone who lives in the desert, 107 for a week is a lot of heat exposure. My lesbo love buddy went last year. I'll ask her about it and report back.

They lost me at "no public showers."

This would be awesome if it were more comfortable. If someone did Burning Man for yuppies, in a nice hotel ballroom, I'd go... that's probably missing the point.

Edit: I didn't address your post at all. Get your books ahead of time, and have a smart friend tutor you. Show up at office hours when you get back. If I remember correctly, you have a lot of school left. I wouldn't wait.

^^The physical challenge is part of the entire experience. 50,000 people did it last year and though some of them had an unpleasant time, if you can adapt to that environment it can be an incredible experience. It is definitely not for everyone... but honestly I find Burning Man incredibly liberating and a great personal growth experience full of interacting with people in a way completely out of normal society that I've never forgotten.

That being said, if you are that nervous/frail about the heat you can always rent an RV or something. But as long as you're drinking a gallon of water a day it ain't that bad.

TM -- I know for a lot of schools, BM actually falls the week before classes this year for some reason. Maybe you could double check?

I know many people who go although it falls during their first week of classes. It might help to post on eplaya (the burningman.com forum) or on tribe and ask. Basically... you have to contact your prof in advance, TELL them that you will miss the first week of class and ask for the syllabus so you can be caught up.

Good luck and it's a good time to start researching it. There are lots of other outdoors festivals across the country... where are you located?

It revolves around the Solstice, August 21st.

Used to be the is cool Libertarian event where anything goes, not so much now.

Bring EVERYTHING you need for a week in the DESERT. Water especially.

If you can get hooked up with a good camp that can help a lot. A camp with a kitchen/meal plan and a big shade structure is the best!

Thats what I'm looking for. To experience that with like people is even better.

People make their own outdoor showers so I'm not worried about that. The people I would go with have been to many burns before me. So they're pretty experienced on handling the elements.

Yea BM starts during my first week of classes. I definitely wouldn't mind starting things early so I can be prepared when I go back.

Anomar, I'm in San Diego. If you know of any events in the socal area feel free to let me know. I know they have "lightening in a bottle" type events but its hard to find more.

I just remembered... my friend was having the same dilemma last year. She ended up emailing her teachers to let them know and it was fine.

I say go! You can contact your teachers in advance and let them know you will be out of school that first week....

That said, you might want to leave a little bit early, because I've never known anybody that could go right from burning man back to their normal routine. They need a few days to chill out

I am thinking about going this year. I am DEFINITELY going to WMC also (Winter Music Confrence)

IMO you sound like your mind is pretty made up and you just need to ensure that you can skip the first week of classes with minimum hassle. You can do it!

And as VegasPrincess said, you might want to leave early-ish, like at the crack of dawn on Sunday morning. It can be intense, re-integrating into society.

I've been to BM the past 3 years, and I hope that I will never have to miss it. It is one of the most incredibly amazing experiences you wil ever have in your life! The openmindedness and generosity of fellow burners is wonderful. I've had similar problems with school conflicts, but I'd say it is definitely worth missing the first class or two and working to catch up.

Have you considered not going for the entire week? I know it feels like missing a ton of fun, but this past year I had a final on Thursday of the week of the festival, so I mobbed up there right after the final. Yes, my stay was cut a bit shorter, but I was still able to go and have a blast. Of course, this year I won't have a school conflict, so you can count on me being there the entire time!!!

The heat is really not all that bad--yes it sucks but I'm usually having too much fun to really notice it all that much. And if you get so hot you can't tolerate your costume anymore, no one'll even flinch if you say screw the clothing. I spent all day wearing pasties and booty shorts, and carried around a spray bottle on my bicycle.

I definitely recommend just going ahead and buying a ticket when they are released-it is cheapest at first release date, and if later you decide not to go, tickets are suuuuuper easy to unload on craigslist in the weeks before the event.

Go!!! You'll have the time of your life.

I picked up my ticket today.
My brain is contemplating all the things I want to wear and the people I'll meet and the things I'll do. *wiggles with glee*

I'll find some way around the math thing and work really hard when I come back.

I'd be interested in Bumblefuckin my way up to Nevada again! Provided my car stays in good shape. Well actually you see tons of flyers around here about rides, I'm sure half the population of ABQ is going, shouldn't be a problem! Always did want to try it once.....with SW'ers in the equation now....OH yes.

    Yay TM!

I haven't bought my ticket yet -- i'm not stripping right now so I don't have $250 lying around (shiiit, I forgot about how the other half lives, not dropping $250 cash on random things that don't happen in eight months, sigh), but as it just keeps getting colder and colder here I keep daydreaming about being in the desert, totally naked and covered in sun.... mmmmmmm
