    `Surge' makes the banned-words list
DETROIT - Resist the urge to say you will "wordsmith" your list of New Year's resolutions rather than write one. And don't utter, "It is what it is" when you fail to meet your first goal.

Those are two of the 19 words or phrases that appear in Lake Superior State University's annual List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Mis-Use, Over-Use and General Uselessness. The school in Michigan's Upper Peninsula released its 33rd list Monday, selecting from about 2,000 nominations.

Lake Superior State University's 2008 list of banished words or phrases:

    • perfect storm
    • Webinar
    • waterboarding
    • organic
    • wordsmith/wordsmithing
    • author/authored
    • post 9/11
    • surge
    • give back
    • `blank' is the new `blank'
    • Black Friday
    • back in the day
    • random
    • sweet
    • decimate
    • emotional
    • pop
    • It is what it is
    • under the bus

    Whatever.

I like wordsmith. I've pronounced my friend Jay Zeno one many times because he is. But I never use it as a verb. Just so you know.

Back in the day, we would decimate such a thread by throwing it under the bus, but it is what it is.

haha i heard this on the radio the other day and laughed so hard. Me and my friends say "back in the day", "it is what it is" and "random" more than we should.

    FBR is too kind.

Organic? How do we refer to organic matter, then? Noninorganic? That's efficient.

Instead of webinar, we say online seminar? Web lesson? Virtual classroom? Really, I think webinar is here to stay.

It's certainly not water skiing, skimboarding or surfing!
"Waterboarding" is described in an investigative piece by about harsh CIA interrogation techniques as follows:

"Water Boarding: The prisoner is bound to an inclined board, feet raised and head slightly below the feet. Cellophane is wrapped over the prisoner's face and water is poured over him. Unavoidably, the gag reflex kicks in and a terrifying fear of drowning leads to almost instant pleas to bring the treatment to a halt.

According to the sources, CIA officers who subjected themselves to the water boarding technique lasted an average of 14 seconds before caving in. They said al Qaeda's toughest prisoner, Khalid Sheik Mohammed, won the admiration of interrogators when he was able to last between two and two-and-a-half minutes before begging to confess.

"The person believes they are being killed, and as such, it really amounts to a mock execution, which is illegal under international law," said John Sifton of Human Rights Watch."

I had never heard it before. Then again, in my days of corporate whoring, we never had anything so "advanced" as online seminars.
