Angry Have You Ever Been Fired for Being a Stripper?

Ok, so this is what happened... well happened back this summer... but I'm still brewing about it so I'd like ya'lls opinions. I was working at a promotions company as a booking agent this past summer. All the sudden out of nowhere one day I came into work and was fired on the spot. The explanation... 'we do not want our company associated with that type of behavior.' Now, here's the kicker... I was 6 months pregnant! I hadn't been dancing for awhile at that time, and honestly didn't plan to go back. I don't even know how they found out. I got a huge lecture about how degrading the job was... blah blah blah. Of course I went back to dancing cause here I was... a new mama with no job. Anyhow, has that ever happened to any of you? Was it even legal for them to fire me for something that did not affect my job performance? I loved my job and was very good at it... management and I never had had any problems before this.

Depending on the laws in your state, they can fire you at anytime with or without a reason generally without repercussion. The flip side is that the same law that allows employers to do this in so called "right to work states" also allows you to up and quit at anytime with or without reason, and generally without repercussion.

That being said, if they specifically fired you for being a dancer and not something related to job performance, etc. it is in fact discrimination and/or wrongful termination, but you would have to be able to prove that was the reason for your employment being terminated. If this is a situation you feel you need to take legal action in, I highly suggest you get yourself an attorney.

I'm sorry you had to deal with this crap, and I really hope you and your little girl are doing well despite the set back. I've never lost a job due to being a dancer, but I've experienced judgement and discrimination in plenty of other instances because of it.

Thats not discrimination or wrongful termination to being fired as an ex-stripper.

Well, it might be discrimination but not any kind that is covered by the law.

That is about as discriminatory as hippies not hiring ex-marines.

Getting an attorney is going to be a waste of money and everyone's time - that's if the attorney even takes it seriously.

Just to satisfy my own curiosity, how would it not fall under the category of wrongful termination and how is this type of discrimination not covered by the law?

Not looking to start any kind of argument here, I really am curious. I'm certainly not an attorney or student of law, but I like to know things. Also, I suppose I should have adding to my advice on hiring an attorney, that I advise it only because I cringe at seeing people ask questions about law on internet forums. Typically the folks that answer are not qualified to do so (myself included), and I should have made that known in my original response.

People are legally covered for discrimination in regard to race, religion, creed, gender (and in some - but not all areas - sexual orientation.)

If you can somehow pidgeon hole dancing into one of those categories you are good to go, but I don't see how that can be done.

Wrongful termination is discharge from a job by illegal means (ie, the above discrimination protections.) Not getting along with the boss is not wrongful termination no matter how well the job was done.

A bit more to chew on:

They can generally fire you for any reason they want unless your union protects you from wrongful dismissal (barring a very few exceptions). Nobody has a right to a job. What you might have had a right to is severance, because at least up here I can't imagine that being just cause. I doubt you'll get it now if you lost your job 6 months ago.
