    Default Jury Duty

So, I have on-call jury duty starting Jan. 6th. Since my income varies by day and it's not like my employer can give me my vacay time (since I don't have one)... how can I let them know what I'm missing out on? Don't they reimburse you for your work days? (Obviously, I've never done jury duty before.)

I think they pay a flat rate per day. This is why I never respond to those jury things...

what do you mean you never respond? how do you have a choice?

they pay you like $20 a day. they dont pay you what you'd be earning at work. i lied to get out of mine, but they'll postpone it. my group number didnt get called so it didnt matter anyway. there's a good chance you won't even have to go.

*sigh*, that's what I was afraid of... it said something about $30 a day... That's really lame.

I had jury duty about a month ago, the county paid me for mileage to get to the courthouse (about $10) for my day of service. I didn't mind though because my employer paid me also and I got a day off of work. I don't think the court pays much more than that unless it's a long trial.

Well, think about the types who think going to jury duty IS important.

Then remember they help make case law.

Case law that may very well effect YOU.

Please don't take it the wrong way, but I find it so amusing to hear "government this" and "government that" on this site and then when presented with an opportunity to directly participate in it -- oh it's too big of an effort.

I haven't gone to jury duty for years. Take a book. You sit around all day, waiting to get called into a courtroom to be selected for that trial. If not, back to the waiting room. All day, until you either get put on a jury or they send you home.

But they aren't paying you stripper money that's for sure. Could you work nights that week?

I think it's understandable. Yes, I'm doing it. No, I don't have to be happy about it. With all the money wasted on fancy bedsheets, private jets, Grey Goose martinis, and other crap... yea, I think it's lame that someone is pulled out of their job on $30 a day. Now, if I could sit on a jury trying the president... I would seriously PAY for that.

My brother had long hair - he shaved off 1/2 of it and went in for his jury duty...

ok, he actually got like $200 in gas vouchures because some radio station wanted to shave a red head on air and he was first to call but yea, he left it like that and went to jury duty the next day...

guess what? they didnt want him as a juror....

I took a book down there and hung out from 7 am to about 1 pm. Then they told us they wouldn't be needing us, and let us all go home. That was it. I never even got called for selection.

If you can spell your name correctly twice in a row, you usually won't wind up on a jury. They tend to veer away from educated folks.

I served on a jury, and with educated folks. It was a privilege. I don't remember being paid for it.

If it's terribly inconvenient, let's do away with it and put the decision of guilt, or not, in the hands of judges who are paid to do it.

As far as pay goes, at least in my state, it depends on your employer. Sometimes you get the jury pay on top of your regular job pay, (usually this is the case, again, in this state) & sometimes it gets subracted from your regular pay)This is my experience w/it: I got a notice. I emailed them, explaining I take care of my mom, etc. They requested a doctor's note. I got 2 notes, & I was supposed to call & 'confirm' that I was off the list, which I attempted to do, but gave up after 2 or more tries + 20 min. waiting time. I then mailed copies of notes by certified mail, & received a mail confirmation. They did say I could be called to it again, since it's a random list.
For the record, I had previously served on one (was called down to go but didn't serve ) years ago, for 1 day.
I also recently gave a deposition as a witness in an accident case.

Last time I did it (a few years ago) it was more like $5 a day. Basically enough to reimburse you for gas or bus fare (but not for parking). Alternatively, instead of money, you could get vouchers for the city trolley.

Heh, I told them I was a stripper... I thought that would be enough to scare them away... but it wasn't. What's stressing me out is that it's ON CALL jury duty... for a month. I'm paranoid that I'll forget to call every day and get arrested or something.

They don't usually pay you shit, and quite often they don't care if you starve because you have to serve on a jury.

I missed getting a jury summons once because I'd moved and when I called they just said don't worry, send it back and write on it that you moved.

The pay is really a per diem of sorts. Expenses like lunch and gas. They aren't inclined to pay you to do your duty as a citizen.

^I guess that makes sense. *sigh* But yea, still not happy about it.

I still haven't been asked to come in yet... They've just been telling me to call back and check over and over. If I do have to actually go in, I hope they give me enough warning so I can rearrange my schedule... Stupid on-call federal jury duty, boo.

Audrey, that's a bit of a risk you're taking there... The possible costs really outweigh the benefits.

^^ and since I havent been a registered voter since, oh, forever - i dont think they have my address to send me a jury duty notice....

and can i say again i was 18 years old and didnt realize at the time that it was mandatory? i was a KID. just because you turn 18 fro 17 doesnt mean all of a sudden you know everything. i didnt even know what credit was until i was 20 - i was sheltered from everything that had to do with being a productive citizen while growing up.
