    Default YMCA

Anyone ever work out at the YMCA? There's a new one right by my house, and I was curious about it. The only experience I've ever had at a Y was downtown as a child, and it was over-run with people who scared the living daylights out of me. This new building is on a much better side of town, but I'm really unfamiliar with the whole concept. It's just like a normal gym, right? Or is it some kind of hotel? "It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A!" ..

haha. i'm at the y. i've never worked out at another gym, but mine seems to be pretty standard.

if you look it up, they've probably got a website. my gym's website doesn't say much about the equipment and whatnot, but they've got their class schedules, and there are some great classes. i've looked up other y's in the area, though, and while some have had some really interesting classes, they didn't have as many classes.

the biggest negative with the y is all the old people. the gym sorta seems to cater to them.

on the other hand, that means that there aren't a ton of gorgeous gym bunnies and big hulking dudes (though there are few), which makes it a much more comfortable place to work out.

Yes, infact I just got a membership there! I think it nice considering the price other gyms charges. I join because it is cheap to join. I will get the same results at another gym. Now I dont know about staying in the YMCA. I did not see a lot of old people. But I did she a lot of family people. There where other parents. I do know they are all differant, the lady or man at the desk can show you the differant types.

It is what it is, not what you want it to become, that's important -- at least for now. Today, remember that things worth having are worth waiting for!

OOOhhh a new one??? I'd be interested to know what that's like.. most of the y's i've been to have been old and rather dilapidated... it'd be nice to see a newer one with some updated equipment. the good thing about y's are the prices and the amenities (pool, other classes) and the fact that it's a community vibe.

WAIT i lied... when i was going to college in chicago my gym was a Y! it was actually pretty nice... (sorry, i was thinking all my Y experiences were in rochester) and there wasn't the upsell-pressure of many of the sportclub chains like bally's, 24, etc...

The Y's here in Indy are nice. I had a membership at one for years, but I let it lapse last year when I started back dancing. Maybe I will go back to it in a month or so when the New Year's resolution work out people are gone. The one I go to has a huge pool that I love. They also let you go month-to-month on membership.

I used to be a Y girl. Around here they are really nice, and they don't cater to the old people here. The Y's here are the only gyms that have full size pools. In Tucson the Y's have shitty classes, so I switched to take step and b/c my new gym is open later. When you are a y member you can visit other ys for free or almost free. When I went to visit a from near San Jose the y was SOOO nice and they had the best classes. They are all different.

The YMCA is another gym. They are more typically family oriented and less meat market than let's say Bally's or the like. Notice I said typically because the YMCA's vary from location to location. I work out at one that normally has people in their 30-40's, mothers and fathers who can drop their kids off at the child care. During the holidays we get lots of college students. There is another Y just a mile down the road that specializes in rehab and older folks. Your more typical person there is probably 65, although there is no restriction on which one we can go to (I have the all-central Florida membership). Occasionally I'll visit the downtown Y and that crowd is totally different, more single professional, 20's and 30's.

Here is a cool thing about the YMCA. Whenever you are out of town you can visit the local Y. They give you something like 3 free visits, just show them your card. That way you have no excuse not to work out on vacation. I've been to them in Chicago, Ottawa and Raleigh.

I've been going to the Y for years. The one near us is in a really upscale area and mainly has rich old people working out. Nobody scary (unless you accidentally walk in on the 70 & over yoga class). hehehe

I dunno man... $46/month is a lot more than I was paying at 24 hour fitness - but $30 for students isnt too shabby...
