I used to be a tanning addict, I quit for about a year and have been sunless tanner but it's too much of a hassle to maintain. So my question is if it's safe to use a tanning bed in moderation? Or should they be completely avoided?

There was recently a story in the Melbourne news about a young girl who died at 26 from a melanoma which she associated with her solarium use (only 10 sessions) at 19.

This may not have been the cause of her skin cancer as Australia has very high UV rays but it also may have had a impact towards it.
I'm really fair so I never use tanning beds and always use sunless tanner but this has scared a lot of friends away from solariums.
I was thinking about this too. We're moving into a place that has a free tanning bed. Personally, I like being pale and since I'm very heavily freckled, I know I'm at a high risk for skin cancer... but there's no question that tanned strippers make more money. I guess the money isn't worth cancer but I too have been wondering how much tanning I could get away with.
ive heard there is no such thing as a "safe tan". Even ifyou dont get cancer the wrinkles and aging effects can be pretty bad long term.
I invested in a home airbrush tanner and so far i really like it...no goo on your hands. I havent gone tanning in over a year and now wear sunscreen as much as i can. Its a scary thing.![]()
once i build up my tan i go once a week. it was closed between christmas and new year so i have to build the blood thing up again!

I do a level 3 two times a week. Mondays and Thursdays. I love my tanning it's my only vice other then diet soda.

If I'm too pale for my liking and I'm trying to get tan again, I go 3-4 times a week until I get to the color I want. Once I'm as dark as I want to get, I go twice a week to maintain my tan.![]()
At my age (almost 30) I'm trying to cut back on the sun damage. I've found that one 15-20 min tan a week is enough to look dark under club lights. If I add a spray tan it looks even better.
hmmm.. are we agreeing that it's okay as long as it's only like once a week?
I've heard about many young women getting skin cancer. I'll have to do some more research. sunless tanning is such a pain in the butt.
No, its still not okay. Even once a week is damaging but for some of us tanning its a necessary evil. We have to look good naked for a living after all, and a tan makes a significant difference.
I've been wondering the same thing. I love how I look tan, and especially now that I dance. I want to go once or twice a week, just to get a good base to use my sunless tanner over. I'm so pale that if I don't put it on EVERYDAY it looks like ass.
I also figure i can put a towel over my face and just use bronzer. How come everything nice in life gives you cancer?![]()

I used to go every day after the gym, but I haven't been going much lately. Less than weekly. And when I go, I wear sunscreen on my face and a chapstick with sunscreen in it. I'm so afraid to be wrinkly and stuff like some girls at my club who are super tan. I love the look of my body with color, but I don't want to be in a 90 year old body!
BUT I don't like looking super pale at work either. I would use sunless tanner, but I can't do it myself. I always turn orange and streak. I think I'm gonna try Mystic Tan or some other professional spray-on. MUCH healthier, plus they can shade muscle tone and make you look fabulous!
Once a week or once every two weeks...
If you're so pale a tan won't "take"...Use fake bake. Please.
I slather on the tanning lotion they sell at the salon- pricey, but it helps the skin deal with the trauma of getting all those UV rays at once.
I genereally go twice a week, more if I have been out of town or not had time to tan the previous week. I know it's not great for me but I love it. As madmaxine said a good taning lotion is important, as is wearing goggles to protect your eyes.
once a month, and i am getting spray tans once a month too
I make the same money whether I am pale or tan, no difference at all. If there is any difference it is probrably on confidence levels, but mine dont change with skin color.
To ALL: One 15 min session per week will increase your chance of skin cancer by 50 percent. It is not safe to tan at all!!
^Exactly. In the club, it's clear that I'm not dark but I don't look at all pasty like I do IRL. Cancer doesn't run in my family and I don't see any reason to argue with that.
I look sickly when I'm pale so I'm willing to risk it. And I cant fake bake..Im allergic.
I freckle like crazy on my shoulders when I tan..but guys seem to love that.
Now that its free esp..I tan every time I work at the webcam studio...2-3 times a week. Its an old bed so I have to do 20 minutes several times a week to get color. But whatever..its free.
Oh...and I dont tan my face since sn damage will show more and faster there. I even it out with makeup and bronzer. Looks a little odd whenh I"m not made up..tan body and ghost face.. but whatever

I once went on a tannng bed maybe 5 yrs ago but it didnt do much I didnt think so didnt bother again and dont want to look like sonatella versace when im 40! I adore real sun and cant wait to roast in it and tan in about 5 minutes but faking it is too hard. I did have sun labs sparay tan few times which is a lovely golden and palish tan. ST Tropez is gross and i once stayed in for a week after having one done as looked like posh spice and was mortified!!
I have palish hair and wear lot of white, i go with the ice maiden look!

^ the first time you go won't do anything, usually, depending on your skin type.
i read this article by a dermatoligist, and he said it was bad because if you start using them you get nice colour perhaps but if you stop your skin goes pallid and lacklustre so you need to do it more and more and keep it up! So best not to do it at all really. Im very big on spfs and wear them everyday on my face even in gloomy london! Id never go unprotected under uv rays! when i was little id wear baby oil and sunbtahe in the sun, im lucky i never got cancer!! Theres some good tans out there and real sun gives you vitamin D, so why bother with beds!
