I can make it go back and forth just by shutting my eyes for a split second (longer and harder than just a regular blink) right before the leg is to either side. If the leg is to the right when I open my eyes, it will turn clockwise. If it's to the left when I open my eyes, it will turn counter-clockwise.

Correct. There are other common simpler illusions you've probably seen that are similar including this one:

    and

    http://www.coolopticalillusions.com/...rcle-cones.htm

The major key to understanding the reason she can appear to flip is actually pretty simple. Note that she is just a black 2-d image. She has no lighting highlights or outlines. Your brain though has evolved to see 3-d real world objects, and is more inclined to see her as an image of a 3-d dancer, then a 2-d image. Your brain use clues like lighting and perspective to determine what is nearer, what is further away. Lacking that info (which is missing in a pure black 2-d image), your brain makes a guess. Either guess is just as likely to be correct, but depending on which way your brain decides to fill in the missing info, she will appear to rotate one way versus the other.

p.s. I don't know if there is any correlation to left/right brain orientation the way the original linked internet article suggests. Could be. Or it could just be random.

I see it both ways at different times. I think I'm tarded.

I can only get her to go counter clockwise, feel like a brain failure :-(

Initially she was counter clockwise for me. Then after about half a minute, she flipped clockwise. Then once I started reading peoples responses on that page, it flipped back to counter clock wise again. Then I sat there watching her. She flipped back to clockwise again, and then I made go back the other way and just played with switching her direction for awhile going back and forth. That is totally cool!!!

It's not switching; it's your eye playing tricks on you. Like those 'do you see two faces or a goblet' pictures...only this one moves.

It's all a matter of perspective. Once you change yours perspective you see something new. Neat huh?

(And oh shit, I wasn't picking on you specifically, I just thought you were a good person to reply to... sorry!)
Well i love my mind then!

Yeay, got her to switch, don't feel like such a brain failure now.

I am too tired from working as a real live 3D dancer to get this bitch to switch.

I'm going to hit the showers and beg my brain to stop being so right-brain oriented.

I think being tired actually helps. I focused on her legs, and could make her switch, as well as go back and forth. It took a little longer, but I finally was able to do that looking at her head too. Very cool!

Counter clockwise (I never say "anti", lol) I cannot see her going clockwise.

originally I saw her counter-clockwise, and then I wanted to see her clockwise and I did...I can switch and see her going both ways. Just look at her feet and imagine which direction you want to see. I do feel pretty balanced in my logic vs fantasy brain life.
