Default Forget Tupperware: Taser Parties Are the New Craze

With all the past taser talk here, I thought this was interesting:

GILBERT, Ariz. — Before she lets them shoot her little pink stun gun, Dana Shafman ushers her new friends to the living room sofa for a serious chat about the fears she believes they all share.
"The worst nightmare for me is, while I'm sleeping, someone coming in my home," Shafman says, drawing a few solemn nods from the gathered women.

I still wonder about them. I mean i just read the article and the one lady says "you don't want to kill anybody blah blah blah!"

If someone is breaking in my home what would be the intent? Especialy since there is always a motion light on over the garage, and another inside the window that senses motion and pops on, lights up near inside the door.
They see thst and they are coming in anyway, that's a problem.

They can come in through the doggie door but would have to kill the dogs. We would hear that as well, dogs wont go down easy, and god forbid the dogs get shot.... i mean these weapons sound great for those who don't want or are afraid of a gun. But just to knock a person down with one? That wont happen with me. Intent to kill me, i am shooting, and it's not a taser.

That is just me though. I went to the gun show, and noticed many who are into guns don't check out tasers. I'm afraid it will fail me.

I agree totally. I have mixed feelings on it. It's better than nothing, but has the potential to be problematic. For example, after you taser the person, then what? It's effects are short lived. Do you jump on him and tie him up? Or wait 'till he gets up and is really pissed. You have at most, 2 shots.

Best course would be to taser the perp, then run out of the house at top speed. Personally, I don't think people should be forced out of their own house, and what if their is a kid in the next room, etc? Yup, get a good revolver or easy to deal with pistol such as a Glock...

In fact, I would say, Taser and good pepper spary would at least give you options, taser first, pepper second, and then you may have the person unable to fight back so you can call 911 and such, or get your kid and get out of the house, etc.

I'm inclined to agree with yall. Theft isn't a huge deal in my opinion (not that attached to my stuff) but invading my home and being a threat to my family---yep I'm feeling STKish. It's the Cancer in me, probably.

Again, I've been lying in bed the last few days wishing I had a gun so I could blow my head off. Obssessively thinking, mind you.

Not everyone should have a gun. At least its my own choice though.

^ I feel similar to you Kat. With a gun in the house I always worry that one night I'd come home extremely drunk and upset, then end up blowing my own head off. I'm not even depressed and have never been suicidal, its just that what-if.

As for a taser party, that sounds fun! I'd love to have a couple of them, one for the car one for home. You'd never see me set foot in a tupperware hen party but to go shoot tasers at a target--hells yah!

Sorry to hear that. I doubt it's the lack of a gun stopping you. Studies find people simply use another method. Japan for example is very strict on guns and has a very higher suicide rates.

True enough, but all law abiding adults should have access to them if they so desire.

And that is the important point: choice. I respect and understand your reason for not having one and have talked a few people out of getting one in the past.

Well hell, contact that woman, the taser company they mention, and get your own started!

And to think...less than 20 years ago you could just walk down the street without much fear at all.

Might as well market on it, since it's here.

There has never been a point in History, were one could simply "walk down the street without fear". People just exercised common sense and stayed away from lawless ghettos and other bad areas. Crime seems terrible and our nighly news seems to bathe itself in blood; think on this though, crime reporting has come a long way.
    forensic science too.

I have one problem with the TASER, the effect last for five seconds. You can pull the trigger again and give the perp another five second ride on the lightning. This can go on until the battery dies, as long as the perp has both electrodes stuck to them.

This is fine in a parking garage, or on the street. You can run away. Your bedroom? What are you going to do keep shocking them until the Cops arrive in ten minutes or an hour? Hello Lawsuit!

What planet was that on? I grew up in Brooklyn NY myself, and 20 years ago crime rates were much higher.

Right. Sometimes I don't think when I post, however I will state that just because the place comes with a bad rap, doesn't mean you're going to get mugged all the time.

You're both probably right. However I do feel there is a fine line between providing for self defense conscious people, and marketing fear to sell the solution. TASER parties? Come ON. Shouldn't something like this be a little more serious? We play the "Non Lethal" aspect of it down so much that, THAT is all most people are going to hear is "Non Lethal" and never educate themselves to what that means.

And thusly you'll hear about kids grabbing their mom's taser's and shocking their siblings with it because mom never locked it up. But I'm sure that's not the Party's fault.

I digress. It's a hard argument, and I'm not downplaying their need. I just wish we'd work on other areas so the people didn't feel that they need to have low-level firearms and non-lethal attack weapons on their person to feel safe in their homes and outside.

We have a gun in the house for security. I have mixed feelings about guns, but there is a reality that makes them necessary. My main concern with TASERS is I worry about people carrying them and using them inappropriately (e.g., when pissed off, scared even though the other person is no threat, etc.). People thinking it doesn't kill so they can use them with less care than they use a gun. I guess the wrongful TASER lawsuits will increase if they are abused, and if it becomes an excessive problem, the system will adapt accordingly.

Another problem with Tasers is if the prongs land too close together they are in-effective as well. This hit from a police taser failed to bring me down. Although uncomfortable, the jolt was not incapacitating.

Interesting. And why are the cops tasering you?

I was at a hockey game and there was a fight on the ice. When the player was ejected from the game The entire section I sit in was taunting him. Well his dad and I got into it, and his Dad came from the Locker room area after me. In the fight a officer was knocked over. When the next wave of cops came over then only saw me on top of another officer so they tasered me. You can see the fight here:
