    Default any Yorkie dog owners?

I am quite interested in getting one of these dogs sometime in the future. I have read all the basic breed info on them but I am wondering if anyone here can share their personal experiences, both good and bad, with these dogs.Anything I should know that isn't covered in the typical breed information websites? thanks

I have two yorkies and love them to bits! The only thing I can say is that they are very hard to house break if you are away from home due to work. My oldest Yorkie is 2 ans still messes in the house if I am at work. My other is only 5 months old, and it is expected that accident will happen. At least the mess is tiny! My two are just a joy to have and are very well socialized. I have other pets as well, and everyone gets along well. I really can't say I have a "downside". They are very loyal and cuddly...true lap dogs. I'm Yorkies for life now!

I've known quite a few yorkies who weren't very good with young kids (mostly the grabbing and tugging at the hair) but that could've just been a personality thing. They have a tendency of having leg problems once they get older because of how tiny their's are, so it's not uncommon to see bowl-legged yorkies. My aunt gives her yorkie a tiny bit (like a quarter of the pill, ground up) of that Lakota stuff for joints every day in her food to keep it from getting too bad though.

Great dogs...but make sure you give LOTS of attention. They can get bored quickly and LOVE attention!!!

Ahhh my mother used to breed various dogs, Yorkies are on that list. Yorkshire Terriers are cute, but require much grooming, and crate training as a young pup.

They can be barkers, but are smart little guys. ANY terrier has lots of energy. They love walks and keep up with the best of us with those little legs.

Depending on the breeder... they can be biters or sweet natured. I firmly believe they need to be socialized very young around other dogs and people.

I'm a former Yorkie breeder. If you don't want them to have their signature long fur, they can be quite easy to maintain. I've never crate trained a dog in my life, so unless you really want to, the breed itself is not prone to behavior that requires any sort of crate training. They are an active breed, but not an overly hyper breed as a whole. They are very clingy once they bond with you. Despite small teeth, they do well with hard food. If you want to grow out their fur long, invest in curlers. Yes, curlers. Keep their fur up in them when you don't want to show them off.

I disagree. EVERY pup should be crate trained to protect the animal while owners leave the home. Many people leave a pup out to chew on wires etc. or lock it in the bthroom and wonder why they do chew.

Crate training is a natural process, since dogs are den animals. Never leave a pup unattended. The disaster list is long, and includes death.
Crate training is very very easy...

great, thanks for all the replies so far. All are appreciated

I prefer the look of the puppy cut, so grooming will be a bit easier. I also am going to wait until I retire from dancing so that I can be around the dog pretty much all the time. Plus my husband is great with animals, but I want this to be MY dog so clingy is just fine. My cat has decided she belongs to him now and well I'm totally jealous, lol! I am very much into the whole furbaby thing. Pet seems like a cold word for how my husband and I feel about companion animals.

Our cat is an older cat. I've had her for 12 years so I don't plan to get a Yorkie until she is gone. I don't want her to feel replaced or anything like that and I want to be able to give all the love and attention she might need in her last days without distraction of another pet. Even though the plan of maybe getting a Yorkie is quite some time from now I want to be fully prepared and educated before hand.

I want to be able to do air travel with the dog so I'll probably crate train even if only for that reason. My desire to do air travel with a furbaby is part of why I want a smalll dog in the first place and it's Yorkies that make me just melt.

Any special breed concerns I should know about as far as travel?

One other thing I'm having some concerns about is buying a dog. All other pets I've had since I was a child have been shelter adopts. I'm feeling a bit guilty about wanting to buy a pure breed puppy. I wonder how hard it would be to find a pure breed Yorkie puppy at a shelter? I've looked a little online at shelters in my local area but no luck. Any ideas on how to get what I want and still save a puppy? Or should I not feel guilty since I've saved a few animals in my life so far?

Nope. Every animal should be trained not to be destructive. If you cant do that, don't get a pet. The home is the animal's den, and a mother or owner in this case, should teach the pup what is good and what is dangerous. The den itself never trains a wild animal.

when you travel, make sure you get a soft sided pet carrier! I had the smallest hard sided carrier once and was on a smaller plane and IT WOULD NOT FIT UNDER THE SEAT! They put my baby under the plane with cargo! It was devastating and she was visibly shaking like a leaf when I picked her up! You can avoid this disaster with a soft sided carrier. Just an FYI.

Ummm right, that is the purpose of the crate. Crate training! And dogs like to den. Meaning many owners often find their dogs out of the way of traffic, i.e. under a table, bed, bathtub...Yep. After a pup is crate trained, it NEVER will give up that crate as a safe haven unles taken from it. How else do you secure the life of a pup when you have to leave it alone?

LMAO no way. If you cant train an animal to not be a pest, don't have an animal. Your animal should feel safe in your HOME. Not just a single, drab crate. You take a dog into your home and make your home it's home. You secure the life of a puppy by puppy-proofing your home. Duh. Crates are for those who don't want to take the time to integrate a dog into their home as a whole.

well that isn't me for sure. I'm all about a pet being a family member. I have a question, if you don't mind.
Wouldn't it be useful even if only so they don't freak out during air travel where they are required to be in a crate like carrier?

For travel that's fine. It's also required for some forms of transportation. What I'm against is locking a dog up in a small space when you go out. If you don't want to be responsible for their behavior at all times, get a goldfish lol.

I could never crate my pom. She was fine in her carrier, although a bit freaked out by flying. The vet gave her something to ease her anxiety when we flew...some kind of anti anxiety med.

Gotta agree 100%...crate training is good for small amounts of time...not to be in all day

well no worries needed about me keeping my future dog in a crate all day. So not the way we do things at our house. Pets are family members to us. I'd just be doing it as prep for travel so it's not a super strange thing for the dog, that's all.
