Default Low WBC and granulocyte count

I went to the doctor today because I've had a dull backache for a couple of weeks and feel as though I am trying to get sick. The last couple of days it's took a turn for the worse and I just feel awful, like I've got the flu (aches and pains, low grade fever, fatigue, etc.).

I don't have mono again, thank god nor do I have a bladder/kidney infection. But they did a little bloodwork and my white blood cell count is low along with my granulocytes. She said it looked like I was trying to get some sort of virus but my body isn't fighting it off. She said I need to go see someone who can do a work up and test me for autoimmune disorder/diseases.

I don't have any insurance so this isn't really possible right now. She gave me a decent anti-inflammatory similiar to Ibuprofen which has helped my pain quite a bit. I am also feeling some better after sleeping all day.

    Any insight?

Try these. If you have previously been healthy, particularly focus on the section under causes labelled "Acquired neutropenia caused by drugs and chemicals, excluding cytotoxic chemotherapy". You will also notice a few lines above that infections are the most common form of acquired neutropenia. For example, if you have influenze (the common flu), you can have a temporary neutropenia that will resolve as your body heals. Since I can't evaluate you or your labs and no nothing about your history, I would recommend trying to follow up as she said...did she refer you to a rheumatologist or a hematologist? You might try Duke, UNC, Wake Forest or Brody School of Medicine at ECU if they are near you. They should have resident clinics specifically charged with helping the medically indigent.

My history is that I haven't been doing so well this year. I had mono in March and in June. I still felt weak after these episodes so I went to see a Chronic Fatigue doctor. He said I had a post viral syndrome and recommended a few vitamins for me to take. He also prescribed Adderal to help with my energy and focus since I am now a full-time student.

I take Vitamin C, Magnesium, Once a day multi-vitamin with green tea, Garlique, Coconut Oil, Cranberry, Effexor XR 150mg nightly and Adderal when I go to school.

I was doing okay until last week. I had been having some back pain but not enough to get me down. Then I started having more severe pain and general achiness with fatigue. I normally take half a Adderal when I go to school and function fine. I took two whole pills and I was still so ran down I couldn't move two days ago. I haven't took any Adderal since Friday and Saturday night my heart rate was up pretty high and I had a fever. I went to the doc yesterday and my urine was clear. All my other bloodwork was normal with the exception of my WBC being 3.8 and Granulocyte count being 1.5. I am doing some better today and trying to do pilates to stretch my back out. I have been sleeping all day and night. I feel stiff.

I did a search on Effexor and Adderal. All I could come up with is that Effexor very rarely can cause neutropenia.

You are in my general region. Have you been checked for tick born diseases? Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and babesiosis are the most common. All would give you symptoms like you are describing and the last two can cause neutropenia.

Yeah, I've been on the Effexor for 5 years now.

I haven't had any ticks attached to me this year. We had a lot of them this year but the ones I found on myself were just crawling around. I think the last one I saw was in August maybe.

The doctor I saw yesterday gave me an envelope with my blood test results in it and said I needed have my immune system and thyroid checked. She said she thinks I might be coming down with a bug and my body isn't trying to fight it. She said for me not to take antibiotics as this will lower my count even more.

Where are you on the east coast?

I am going to try to do some pilates again today. I did some last night. It seems to relieve some of the pain.

If you found ticks crawling on you, I would think it is prudent to be checked for tick born diseases, especially in lieu of your prolonged and nonspecific symptoms.

Glad the pilates worked. I hope this is nothing more than your system being run down from the mono and the stress of school. Feel better soon.
