I'll vouch for neooffice. I use it all the time and it doesn't make weird stuff happen.

Open Office may or may not work. The currant stable version requires that the X-11 support be installed. This was not standard in all OSX installs. There is a very early version of the Aqua version available but it has warnings. I like open office a lot but I am running MS on my mac as I have to be able to use it to exchange professionally so I have to know that it well work. If you have your OS X install disk you can install the X 11 if it is not there all ready

What kind of Office files to you want to open? And do you want to just view it or work with it?
Appleworks should have come with your Mac.
If it is a word processor file, Appleworks will open it. You can also save Appleworks files as Word files. Appleworks will also open Excel Spreadsheets. If the version of Office that was used is newer than your version of Appleworks, you might need to buy some updated translators, though.
If it's a PowerPoint file, Keynote will open it and edit it.
If all you want to do is view a Powerpoint presentation, this viewer, which runs in Classic, has opened and displayed every PP presentation I have tried with it. You can download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
