Default What's the latest trend in high lights?

I'm highlighting my hair, again. I'm thinking maybe massive heavy highlighting at the crown only. What do you guys think? Thick? Thin? Should I do foils? Hand painted? What color should I tone it with? Dramatic? Subtle? What do you think? Is there some new trend I don't know about? Give me guidance, I'm taking the plunge this weekend.

I just had mine highlighted in mid-December. The stylist (@ JC Penney Salon) did a bunch of thin highlights on the underside layers and some big chunky ones on top. So when I blow my hair out to style it, there is a lot of blending and the overall appearance of my hair is lighter without making my eyebrows look strange. (They are darker than the hair on my head anyway & I like them that way.)

OK there's my long story...I had to get used to the new look but overall it's had rave reviews.

I think as long as you start off with a couple shades lighter, it's probably hard to go wrong and you will most likely end up with a look you like.

    I like that idea, MM.

AE, I'm thinking light brown instead of blond. I always end up hating the blond after 2 weeks,.

Is the dark color your natural color? How light do you want to go? I don't know much about the free hand technique, I would recommend foils. Depending upon how light you want to go will tell you what you will need to tone with. Probably blue tones.

You have to realize that you are a level 2 IMO. Imagine taking a pony tail of hair from your crown and coloring the shade you want to go to. Imagine taking the pony tail down. You are going to have all that dark around your face and just one area of heavily highlights in your crown. I don't think it will look right honestly. You can do heavier around your crown area but you will need something to blend the color from your crown to your face.

You have a lot of options. You could do some red/violet highlights (like a dark wine color) or red/red (more dramatic cherry color highlights). If you want blonde hues you could some caramel highlights. Or you could lighten your whole head to a caramel shade and do some blonde highlights but that would be more maintenance for you.

Gradual peek-a-boo highlights would be fun... On hair as dark as yous I like them in a caramel tone, but you could do a copper or violet, too.

If you want something a little more subtle, try very fine slices in the crown, front, and sides in a "herringbone" or diagonal pattern... I like to see them in lighter, warmer shades of brown or auburn on dark hair so that the overall effect is just shimmering, multi faceted color rather than slap you in the face "HIGHLIGHTS!!!"

Please, no overly chunky, Christina Aguilera circa Dirrrty highlights... snore.

Is the dark color my natural color? Well, yes and no. Naturally, my hair grows out about that color, probably a level 3. But my hair has been pretty highlighted not too long ago which I've colored over recently with a demi permanent level 4 red violet color. Blond always turns brassy and ends up looking like shit on me, that's why I'm thinking light brown. Isn't that essentially the same color as "caramel"?

caramel is the tone of the color. Light brown can have a warm tone or cool tone to it. Caramel would be more warm and if you used say, blue or violet it would have a cool tone to it.

    I agree with Mia.

I, too am so over the chunky look - i call it tigerstripes....

so the consensus is ultra thin slices?

So what level do you think the highlights should be? Level 6?

Probably a level 6. Definately no lighter. Against the dark you have now anything lighter will look very very blond.

I think you should do thin slices - you can do some on top.

You can also have them done so that depending on how you part your hair you will have the light color or the dark color showing.

now the blond bug is biting me again! What do you think about just 2 or 3 slices of platinum near my face?

I don't like just by the face highlights, especially with that drastic of a color difference....maybe you could do blonde through out tho, and it would be cool. Especially if you threw some blonde in the under layer too.

Ummm, no. First of all, in order to get to platinum, you need to bleach your hair to a pale yellow... there is no way a natural level 3, previously colored hair will lift to an even pale yellow. Even if you could, your hair has been previously highlighted too, so those peices will most likely turn to mush then break off.

For the subtle highlights, I was thinking a level 5... but I agree with Audrey, against hair as dark as yours anything lighter than a 6 and you're back in slap your face HIGHLIGHTS!!! territory.

*cries* OK, no platinum, at least not this time

I never do my bangs; I hate highlighted bangs on me. I'm really leaning towards cool light brown ultra thin slices throughout.

I will do a before and after pic this weekend.

Time and Patience and you can get there. Youll need to do highlights every 6 weeks for about 6 months then youll get that hair!

In the meantime, be a rich bitch brunette... I highly recommend a Redken salon (they'll be more familiar with the herringbone/diagonal patterns) or at least a salon that uses Redken Shades EQ. Have your stylist apply a demi between your foils to richen your darker color and add intense shine. LatinaRose loves Shades and can atest to it's rich bitchiness.

^^^ I... fucking... love... Shades! Seriously, you will learn to love 9nb and 9v for toning highlights and mixing the nb's with the cb's gives you the most awesome, rich auburns.

    End thread jack.

Make sure they do "weaves" as opposed to slices on the pieces right against your face. You don't want a obvious line of demarcation if you can help it.

okay, my last thread jack, I swear!!! Here's something they don't encourage in school because most states require students to demonstrate a traditional weave for board examinations... instead of wasting time slicing out a section, picking it up, then weaving your comb through it, you can weave on the scalp. As you're using your highlighting comb to slice, simply wiggle it as you go... gives you the same effect as weaving in less time.

Also, foil placement has a lot more to do with graceful grow outs than weaving vs. slicing. A traditional highway pattern looks like shit in 6 weeks compared to overlapping diagonal sections.
