    Default Ex-stripper in movie spotlight

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (AP) -- Diablo Cody has a tough-chick reputation -- the tattooed, punkish sex blogger wrote a book about her year as a stripper, and the name of her blog is too risque for family newspapers.
    Cody

Diablo Cody is riding high on the success of "Juno," her first produced screenplay.

But the novice screenwriter also has written a sweet movie that's shaping up as a surprise hit.

"Juno," a sardonic comedy about a pregnant 16-year-old who becomes a "cautionary whale" for her classmates, has rolled out to more and more theaters, picking up rave reviews and Oscar buzz along the way.

Be very careful if you make a woman cry, because God counts her tears. The woman came out of a man's rib. Not from his feet to be walked on. Not from his head to be superior, but from the side to be equal. Under the arm to be protected, and next to the heart to be loved."

Diablo Cody was a Stripper for like 10 months. She did it on a whim. I like her a lot, think she is incredibly talented, but i'm not sure that she's not just some girl who had a "weekend fling" with dancing and milks it now.

Her arm tat is sexy as mount everest, though.

I'm NOT saying i don't like her, but i'm not sure if i'd call her a stripper any more than i'd call anyone else who pulled the 6 month stretch and left out.

I'm not talking down on her, Juno is awesome and i really like her blog. I liked her on Letterman the first time she came up on this site, i liked her enough to read her book. It's just that she kinda talks down on Strippers in Candy Girl. She never says it, but the implication is that SHE'S the only non-trash Stripper in the world. That's the impression i got.

Juno certainly deserves it's awards. Read her blogs. I'll look them up for you if you need me to.

if i thought she was behind the remarkably clever spin-doctoring of her stripping into a real-live hollywood career, i'd have some respect. but based on what she's presented publically, i don't think that's the case.

    Um, um... That Arm Tat?

That arm tat she has is enough to ilicit my lust. I admit it, i'd [you don't get to read this part] Diablo Cody. She seems really cool, but is she a 'stripper' or someone who stripped a couple months?

Maybe i'm being stupid, maybe you girls just want to see her as like a dancer hero or something, i dunno. If that's the case, be my guest. She is remarkable. Thing is there are 30 girls on this website twice as remarkable.

She just managed to, deservedly, get her screenplay sold.

i know she wrote the screenplay. she even wrote her stripperbook. writing a thing doesn't mean you're the brains behind its marketing.

^^ Ditto on all of the above; the trifecta of love for Diablo AND the supporting of Yekhefah.

We've all gone 'round and 'round about this on Diablo before, but I'll state my position again. I don't think she ever meant, in any way, to imply that she busted into the stripping world and was superior to all. I don't get that from the title, from the book itself, or the blog.

I think including "Unlikely Stripper" in the title referred to the fact that she felt like anything BUT an untouchably gorgeous sex goddess - she felt like an awkward, nerdy dork, compared to the much more glamorous image stripping still manages to carry - despite the reality of the downturn in hiring standards, showmanship, and everything else . . . things that ALL OF US complain about here on a regular basis.

She nevereverever implies that she was a full-time, lifelong career stripper. Neither are a lot of the women here. Are people saying that full-time, lifelong career strippers are the only kind of stripper that "counts"? How long, exactly, are you required to strip in order to have your own experience be seen as legitimate? Jeez, I wonder if I qualify.

Anyway, if her style just doesn't appeal to you, I understand that more than I do the need to cut her down for not having stripped long enough, whatever that might be, or for the fact that she pointed out some of the characters and everyday strip club absurdities that we, again, all talk about RIGHT HERE. "Overheard in the Dressing Room" and "Stripper Hall of Shame" anyone? Does posting in either of those threads mean that you think you are the, how did Madcap just put it? "The only non-trash stripper in the world"?

    *off my soapbox sheepishly*

I just think the girl's wicked funny and amazingly smart and talented, and deserves her success. Every bit of it.

P.S. Miabella, no one gets their work anywhere in Hollywood, or in the publishing world, or anywhere else, without a publicity team. You have to have the work there to get the publicists in the first place, and then the rest is always an ongoing team effort to market your work. I mean, even Thomas Pynchon has an agent. Does that mean he's a puppet behind some mastermind manager, and his writing just exists to promote this? What a weird worldview.

Rose, the point is that it's all you ever hear about with her. She referrs to it over and over and everyone else referrs to it over and over. She's like 24, which means that there are 23 other years in her life you never hear about.

Candy Girl is a fun book (Hell, it gets 100 points for the use of the term "Porn-shui" by itself). Juno was a fun movie. She has wit. It's just that riding coattails that she admits were never hers in the first place gets a little old. Seems like she's all about the street cred, though, with the whole stripping thing. Don't get me wrong, i DO like Diablo Cody.

^^ That's fair. It definitely IS part of their talking points for just about every article and interview she does. I personally think that'll undoubtedly fade once she has more work under her belt, and and thus a greater body of work to discuss, but only time will tell.

    FWIW, I like Madcap too.

We should all write stripping books! Let's have a NaNoWriMo for it. I think the results would be very interesting.

I admire Diablo Cody even though I didn't like her writing style in Candy Girl. I want to see Juno as well. She has other scripts in the works at major studios. This isn't just a fluke -- she's talented. Because of her blog a publisher came to HER. That just doesn't happen every day.

The media is just going to focus on the most salacious aspects of her work. It's novelty.

I"m dying to see this movie and I do want to read her book...but I want to see Yeks stuff on the big screen even more. Her stuff is SO good..her movie is now a permanent part of our Christmas tradition of old x-mas radio shows and classic cartoons. I <3 Scotch!!

That is a brilliant idea. Especially after reading the "Introductions" thread, I just keep thinking what interesting and diverse stories are sitting here waiting to be told. Not mine, of course--mine's boring as hell. But maybe as part of an anthology it would fit.

And you definitely should see Juno! You'll laugh your ass off.

The same people who brought you NaNoWriMo also held the first last year. This year, it's in April. Let's all do it and start a fucking INVASION of stripper/screenwriters!

I was thinking for Script Frenzy I might do a stripper movie. My current project (novel and screenplay both) is about a retired stripper; there's only one stripping scene at the very beginning and it's her last night at work, so it doesn't count as a stripper movie. I should do a real stripper movie for Script Frenzy.

And Cam... you make me blush. I'm so glad you like Scotch so much, although poor K is humiliated!

I want to see Juno and have heard it's a good movie. It just tickles me when news stories make a huge deal of someone being a former stripper and going into whispers and gasps like pre-teen, upper class Victorian girls when doing so.

I think a stripper namowrimo would be great! I think it wouldn't be too hard for me to write a daily blog entry to myself chronicling my experiences with dancing and then editing it into a decent narrative.

And it doesn't matter whether you've stripped for 10-months or 10 years, if you've done it you can say you've "been" a stripper. It isn't like she did it two nights and wrote a book. Several months is enough time to get a real sense of things around you.

I can't even believe some think that she wasn't a stripper because she didn't do it long enough. That's ridiculous.

I hated Juno. HATED. I had no idea it was her though. She annoyed me from the minute I read an interview when her book came out. Now that I know it's her movie, it makes me hate it that much more. She just rubbed me the wrong way.
