Just lots of stretching and practice. Don't try to do it when your muscles are cold though, warm them up first. If you've done cardio and your warmed up start stretching. The more blood going through your muscles the better your chances. Don't try when your muscles are cold, you WILL rip your muscles.

I started doing ballet and jazz, in high school when I was 17....it did take some time but I eventually was able to do my left split. I can do center splits but only after a ton of stretching (or alcohol ). I have pretty much given up on being able to do a right split as it is not my dominant leg.

Ah, so doing the splits CAN be "learned"... Then I will have to practice. I always thought it was because people have different tendons or something, which was why some people can do them and some people can't. Right now I can put my ankle behind my head, but's that's the most flexible I can be.

You guys! Yayyy such an inspirational thread, so surprised and happy that it's not true you have to learn in childhood.

AMEN about warming up, and I just wanted to add.....I've been going to the hot tub or steam room at the gym BEFORE my workouts (and I start with cardio, then weights)....I can feel a huge difference. Esp. good for the winter!

Can you hit a stretching 'plateau'? There's a certain move I've been doing now and then since I started dancing a few months ago and I've noticed that I've gradually been able to stretch my leg closer and closer to my head each time, but it seems that lately I haven't been able to get any closer!

i always did the splits in high school...then after i got prego and had kids, couldnt do it anymore. started dancing, and after a year decided i wanted to do a split again. so i stretched a lot and was SLOWLY getting it. one night on stage,i was almost all the way down but still had a ways to go. then I saw a TON of money falling on the other end of the stage. made me split like a pro!!! lol
haha anyways.... just stretch a little, get ur blood moving, and go as far as possible. stand up,do it again....

All you do is lay on the floor and scoot your butt up to the wall. With your legs against the wall, spread them apart as far as possible until you feel a little strain. Stay in this position for 5 minutes. Then relax for 5. Do this 3 or 4 times a night and you'll be a rubber band in no time. The longer you do it, increase the time accordingly (10-15mins). Basically, let gravity do the work for you.
Anyone been doing this? While I've been ill and bored I was and I think it worked a bit!

Yay, this is great to hear. I looked at the site, and most of the stretches are yoga poses!

I couldn't touch my toes. Within four months, I could do the splits. I hardly keep up with the yoga now (for shame...something I'm determined to get back into now), but I'm still way more flexible than I used to be...It gives me less back pain too, because the hamstrings are no longer so tight. That's the real miracle...it gives some lasting flexibilty. So anyway. Something to try.
I just bought this and tried it today. I feel a bit wrung out. Pilates has helped a LOT in my flexibility-too much desk sitting, but this really stretched one of my problems spots-the calves! Mine are so tight. My hamstrings aren't much better. And it was a really calming video too.

Winsor Pilates for me personally helped me do the splits and improve my flexibility.

Then just doing stretches helps me keep it... I generally use my first stage show to do my stretches in a sexy manner (and sometimes not even bother trying to hide the fact that I'm doing my stretches! hahaha).

i never did the splits until i was 21... after dancing for a few months, bam, one day i was just able to drop into them. CRAZY! i can't do them anymore but i'm working on it....

part of the challenge of stretching is pushing yourself to make progress. i reach a certain point and have a hard time going the extra inch...and i tend to bounce into a stretch which apparently is bad. but ive never pulled anything yet. and also it is best to let your body move naturally into stretched positions, like grabbing your foot with your knee bent and THEN stretching your leg behind your head, instead of locking your knee and trying to get it up already extended. i hope i described that right. your body should be able to flow into the positions...

man this thread makes me want to get off my ass and go grab my toes.

I've started working into splits on stage! (okay, it's the upstairs, nobody's paying attention anyway stage, but still) Not QUITE there, but the pole helps a lot to hang onto and slide down. And then slide back outta the split, because it's not there yet. Hope that makes sense.
