Default How much do you pay for your hair to be done?

I am curious as to whether I am paying the average or if it's higher. I love my hair girl, she does a great job and we get along great. She is just the most expensive I have ever had before and Im curious what the normal rates are. I have medium to long hair ( almost to my bra strap). I usually get a blonde highlight and a brown lowlight and a trim (not sure if I am even describing it right). I pay 130 and give her a 40 dollar tip (also if she's good is that tip good or should I be tipping more?). She always does this hot towel around my head and a menthol rub on my temples, so I think it's worth it. I have always paid about 75-100 including tip to other hair girls ( but my hair never looked this good or healthy).

Just curious, what do you pay?

I'm cheap, I do my own cuts and bleach my own roots. Costs less than $10 a month.

I don't get my hair done regularly. My last haircut was $75. My last treatment was the Brazilian Keratin straightening, which was $300. It didn't help my hair at all, I just bought a straightening kit from Walgreen's for $30 and that worked better.

I pay about $140 for half my head done in foils and a trim, which I know is relatively expensive compared with other places however I also know that my hairdresser will do an excellent job.

I did go to a hairdresser a few months ago (when I was living away from my normal stylist) and paid about $60 for the same treatment but also found that I didn't receive nearly as many foils and the hairdresser spent significantly less time on my hair. Also the colour didn't last as long.

$130 doesn't seem out of line at all for cut and high/lowlights. I'd say that's a pretty common rate. $40 is more than generous! She must be totally amazing for you to tip that. I usually stick with 20-25% and you're up at 30% which is great.

The last time I had highlights, I believe it was around $150 with cut, but I had longer hair. Now I am trying to get back to normal.

I get my hair colored every 2 months, and lately I've been getting blond hair on top, dark hair underneath. I pay around $140, but that also includes a trim and the tip (I tip around 20-25%). I think that's a pretty good deal considering when I lived in Chicago, a lot of places charged $45-50 just for a haircut.

When I got my hair cut and colored (I no longer color my hair), I paid 70$. When I got highlights it came out to 130$. I didn't tip though because she worked out of her house. I really loved my stylist but I stopped going to her because it was too difficult to make an appt. due to her kids etc. Now I just get trims for 10$ at the Paul Mitchell hair school. Oh well.

Agreed, that's a great tip! 15%-20% is the norm in the salon, with the exception of the holidays when most clients like to double thier gratuity as thier gift to thier stylist.

I paid (gosh i forgot) around $200 to go from thigh length to just below my boobs, and layers all over my head....never again.

From now on it's at home trims and colouring.

I pay about 85-95 for whatever colors I decide to do, typically foils, and a cut. I typically pay about 120 including tip. My stylist hasn't changed my rate in the last 5 years though, even though she's raised her rates, because I send her alot of business.

I pay from $75 to $120 for my highlights, depending on if it's a partial or full. I pay $60 for my cut. I've been going to the same salon for almost 8 years. The two stylists are the top girls for cuts and color, they do trainings and lots of continuing education and they haven't raised their rates for me ever. They're really great. And I'm so glad you ladies said a 20% tip is okay, I got SO nervous when the OP said she tipped so much! I was thinking, "crap, they're been rolling there eyes at my cheap ass for the last 8 years".

I have started tipping about 25% since I realized that they tip out the shampoo girls and their assistants. Maybe I'll do more. I love them. It's just so much money you know?

I get my cut and color done in different places. I like to pay 60 plus tip or less for color. My stylist charges me 55, but that is just because he gives me the old school price because I have stuck with him for so long. I only tip ten, t he rents his station. All the money goes in his pocket now. I only do one step with my color. Cut is 60 and WELL worth it. I only get my hair cut every 3 or four months. I think she is giving you a great price. You are tipping way more then average. When you are a customer like that I am sure she will fit you in in an emergency!

I put off answering this for a while, but it is simply tooooo tempting.

Nothing: I shave my own head every couple of days ...

I alternate every six weeks between full color and cut ($84) and color, highlights (2 colors) and cut ($140). Always tip 20%.

When you find a good stylist, it is worth every penny.

I pay about $130 plus tip. I get full highlights, and a cut. Then I usually leave a $20 tip. It's ironic because I'm cheap about everything else but when it comes to my hair I pay alot.

About $80 plus tip for highlights, and $100 plus tip if I get two colors done--both include a trim. It's well worth it, IMO. I only get my hair done every three months or so.

$94 plus tip. I haven't had my hair colored professionally in years, just done it out of the box. I want to get it done, but I don't know who to trust! And my salon says it could cost up to $214 to get my hair colored there, and I KNOW I can get the bomb ass color for around $100 somewhere else, I just need to find where to fucking go!

That's reasonable for a highlight, lowlight and cut. I go to an Aveda school and what is suppose to set us apart is our consultations, stress relieving treatment prior to the service and complimentary make-up touch after the service. I can't say this for a fact but I feel like my education is advanced and it's certainly costly. It consumes my life completely and I don't understand how those that work part-time do it. I mean some don't care because they aren't there for the right reasons but if you want it you'll work your ass off for it. Most of the Aveda Salons or salons that we have connections with require some sort of assisting or training program of at least 6 months.

So, honestly from my point of view I put a lot into it. I don't work so I am borrowing money to pay my few small bills then I took out a loan for my tuition. Then of course you want to buy top of the line supplies (ceramic brushes, wide tooth combs as opposed to the others that pull your hair out when it's wet and nice shears) because what comes in your student kit is pretty basic. I also buy extra mannequins for practice. We have projects due that we invest money in and hair shows we go to for extra education that are costly. I would say I easily will invest 30k for school and supplies alone by the time it's all said and done.

Basically, you are paying for the skill you receive. Some salons have booth rentals others split around 50/50. So, if she is working in one of the salons like I probably will work at she gets half of what she charged you. A lot of stylists charge what they can. They aren't going to charge more than what their clients would be willing to pay for their service. For instance if I know I am not great at doing an updo I can't justify charging you 70 bucks for it. Whereas, if I do excellent color and I am highly in demand I can justify charging 100+ for a full set of foils highlights.

I paid close to a hundred for a highlight job & minimal trim, tipped 24 bucks.

What's a salon touch-up for highlights supposed to cost? I gotta pencil that in.

When it comes to the question of, "am I paying too much?" my answer to most is: It doesn't matter if you paid $30 or $300... If you are happy with the way you look and the customer service you received, then you got your money's worth.

madmaxine- I charge the same for a highlight touch up as I would for a highlight... it takes the same amount of time.

BTW greenlady- I wanna know the eight section highlighting technique you've mentioned!
