    Sad Training for a Half-Marathon

Tomorrow I'm starting a 12-week training program for the , a half-marathon on April 6. I've never been able to run very far, but all the runners I know are wonderfully thin, and as an asthmatic who has escaped L.A. air I expect this to be an empowering experience. I have a regimented little training plan I downloaded... out of the whole thing I'm also expecting to lose that bit of inner-thigh flab and lose the last 15 pounds.

I'm posting here just for that push to get my ass in gear, and also to see if anyone in Portland wants to join me for a run sometime if the weather's nice. I'd really like to go jogging in Mt. Tabor sometime but I'm scared to run by myself very early in the morning. And K has ZERO interest in running, LOL!

Anyone else ever run a half-marathon or a marathon? Any tips I need to know?

It is so inspiring to see how the Oregon air is affecting you! I'm jealous.

Be sure to take it easy and not push yourself too hard, too fast. And good luck!

I'm sitting here with a cold and an ear ache and four hours of sleep and I'm thinking no way in hell.

But I know that I really really really really do want to get in shape and start running again. So I'd be into a run in Mt. Tabor, maybe on one of your easy days?

BTW, do you enjoy yoga? I have half a dozen classes paid for at a place and I like going with a friend.

That sounds awesome! I love yoga and really would like to learn; I need to be a lot more flexible. All the running days are relatively easy for the first few weeks, so just let me know when you want to come!

And yeah, I'm so inspired with everything here in Oregon. I'm writing, I'm exercising, I'm getting back into cross-stitching and looking to learn how to knit... I found my first knitting project so now I just need to learn the stitches. I'm really content and inspired here, I feel like I got my soul back after all those toxic years in L.A. I feel so invigorated, I'm not sleeping as much but I'm sleeping better. I just need to make some more money and I'll be all set, LOL!

I think if I do finish the half-marathon, I'll reward myself with a tattoo.

OMG I want to do a half-marathon so badly! I've been running for a few months now and while I haven't gotten faster, my endurance has increased dramatically. I wish I could train with you, but I'll be in Mexico. You'll let me know how it went when I return, and maybe we can plan another one in the summer or early fall. You will do just fine... running is way less difficult and strenuous than people make it sound (well... assuming you have a good back and decent knees), and it's actually quite easy once your body gets used to it. I find real-life running way less taxing than running on a treadmill, though I'm not sure why. You just have to invest in some decent running shoes to start, and not push yourself too hard as you start training. You'll do great
Drought was over. Where was I? Drinks were on the house.
For mixers, my love, you'd poured--what?--even the rain.

I'm always hesitant to respond to threads like these on the pink side, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I'm a slow-ish, definitely non-anorexic runner in Portland. My best 5K time is around an 8:45/mile pace, and my best 10K time was around a 9:00/mile pace. Training pace is between 10:00-11:00 or more per mile.

I'd be open to running with ya, Yek, or in a group, anywhere around Portland. My three favorite running spots are in my neighborhood, Sellwood; downtown around the Eastbank Esplanade; or up and down Terwilliger Blvd if I want to do hills. Mt. Tabor is nice; I've done the summer 5K there and maybe this year I'll try the 8K.

A half-marathon is my next challenge. I did an 8 mile run in mid-December and could probably work up to a half-marathon pretty easily. A slow half, it goes without saying. But maybe running with a newbie runner would make me feel fast
