    Default For you coffee snobs!

Folks, I am something of a coffee snob. If you are like me and take your coffees seriously: buy from small roasting houses, grind it every day right before brewing, filter the water, etc etc, I have some information you should be interested in. If you think Folgers makes good coffee, this is not the information for you...

I don’t drink much coffee, perhaps one mug per day with breakfast, but that mug has to be the best coffee I can get my hands on. The two places I currently get my coffee from are West Coast Roasting:

And, The Roasterie out of Kansas City MO:

    http://www.theroasterie.com

From West Coast I have had The El Salvador and the Sumatra. Both excellent coffee’s. I like the El Salvador in particular.

From The Roasterie I really like their Dark Line, in particular the Full Vengeance. It’s awesome stuff. You can’t go wrong with either of these companies. If you have one to recommend, let me know.

I've always been something of a coffee snob, and this Xmas my parents gave me a really nice coffee maker; you load whole beans directly into the coffee maker with the water and everything, and it grinds them fresh and immediately brews the coffee. They gave me several bags of whole-bean coffee too. It's been amazing!

The whole-bean coffee I like best so far is the Blues City Blend from in Memphis; like BBQ, the coffee is nicely slow-roasted with a lot of flavor. I also love .

I read something once about buying the beans green and roasting them at home in a popcorn popper (reserved exclusively for coffee beans of course) Has anybody ever tried that or is it too much of a fiend move?

That's definitely a coffee fiend move. It sounds like a lot of work. This thread makes me sad. I have no coffee in the house. I have to stop somewhere.

I like Dunkin Donuts coffee. I would never recommend it to a coffee snob, though.

I'm think I'm going to try this. Not the roasting but the grinding.

Actually I have been buying green beans by the 25 pound bag and roasting my own beans for years. This allows me to buy 'organic' coffee grown without a ton of insecticides, as well as allowing me to save huge amounts of money on my 'coffee budget' ... and yes between myself, my family, my neighbors etc I usually go through at least 3 pounds of coffee per week. Green beans do not 'age' the same way that roasted beans do, so green beans will keep for months until you're ready to roast them without affecting the flavor of the coffee. In 25lb quantities, even super quality green coffee beans cost less than $4 per pound, as opposed to at least $5 per pound for questionable quality pre-roasted coffee beans at the grocery store, or $10+ per pound for gourmet roasted coffee beans.

Roasting beans yourself is also a lot easier than it used to be. I have a Gene Cafe roaster because I need to roast a 1/2 pound batch every single day. But the smaller roasters work great too - and so does a cast iron frying pan (providing you've got a good exhaust fan over your stove !) ...

and as for coffee brewers, the best unit I have ever found is made by Capresso ... which has a built-in bean grinder, a built in brew timer, and a built in thermos bottle carafe

I love Caribou Coffee & will start ordering it when I have the disposable income to blow.

I noticed African coffees & chocolates have a particular flavor I'm deeply in love with....Very rich and full.
