    Default Constantly Hungry

I'm at a loss here. Yes, I know I eat like crap, but due to finances that has been a thing going on for months,

This has been going on for one month.

For the last month I am incredibly hungry at all times. No matter what I eat, I'm hungry 20-30 minutes later. Bread, ramen, chicken, beef, oatmeal, cereal, fruit, power bars, Slim Fast Optima 'meal in a can' dealies. Still starving less than a half an hour later. I'm at my wits end here, because being starving all the time leaves me with no energy. For example from this morning:

    4am: Bowl of ramen.
6am: Starving. Eat a Balance protein/nutrition/ energy power bar. Drink one Slim Fast Optima. (meal in a can, supposed to curb hunger for 4 hours, so that's why I bought them.)
8:30 am: Ravenous. Eat another Balance bar and drink another Slim Fast.
    10:30am: Starving.

I AM at work and busy a lot. So that's why I need quick things on the go, and stuff to eat on breaks.

This job is very physical, so I thought maybe my metabolism has sped up. But I've never had it speed up THIS much, if that's the issue.

This is a recent issue, and I have been eating likecrap for months, so I'd think if it was the bad diet, I'd have problems before this month. I still take a lot of vitamins and supplements.

Not pregnant. Period was late, but it DID come.

I'm very stress out and depressed/anxious. Could this just be as a result of that?

What's going on here??? I'm flat broke and eating what I can, but it's not enough! And at work I only get one or 2 breaks, and I can't seem to keep my body fueled up to get me through the work day.

Please somebody tell me what's going on!

i'm not a doc, but imo

your bady was using up stored nutrients. you are all out. vitamins are meant to be supplemental to a healthy diet.

innexpensive ways to get more healthy foods:

frozen produce, mix frozen mixed veggies into your ramen, and into an omlet. Eggs are also innexpensive and very good for you. mix frozen spinage or brocolli into mac and cheese.

eating cheaper produce. buy some bananas. eat one or two everyday. Eat a salad everyday (2$ for dressing, 75$ for a cucumber, 2$ for lettuse, 1$ for a tomato.) you will have enough salad for at least 5 salads.

buy meats that are on sale, and use them well. Baking makes for less shrinkage then stovetop cooking. 1lb of chicken legs=4 big drumsticks. costs under 2$. Cook them at 350 for 50 minutes, seasoned how you like. put one into ramen, with veggies, 2 for dinner for you and R. And make chicken salad out of the last one, or scramble it up in eggs.

I think it has to do alot with what you're eating. Yes, you've been eating like crap for a few months, but you haven't been as physically active as you are now
    (work).

You're hungry because you're not getting any 'real' food. Energy bars, slim fast, and ramen are all ful of sugar and empty calories.

Sandwiches are fairly cheap to make if you buy in bulk and freeze stuff. Replace the ramen with a turkey sandwich with cheese and veggies on whole wheat bread, and you'll actually have some real energy to work with. Peanut butter and real jam or bananas is cheap as well.

I also agree with the eggs. Super cheap, super easy, and way better than what you're currently eating.

ramen and slim fast are NOT going to fill you up. you need to start making yourself healthy snacks that are more filling. stock up on raw fruits and veggies and cut up 2-3 days worth. put them in ziplocks and keep them in the fridge. that way you have "quick snacks" when you need something. you could even get a bottle of low fat dressing for dipping.

you can also do the same with low fat cheese, good deli meats and crackers. make little cracker-snacks when you have some time and they'll keep well for a couple days.

also, produce is almost always cheaper AND fresher if you go to a farmer's market. most towns have one nearby. many of them are only open on weekends. so go on a saturday or sunday morning and stock up.

eating healthy non processed foods is going to be WAY better for you than ramen, and you'll feel fuller.

oh and, drink water. i can't stress that enough. some people who feel hungry are actually just dehydrated. it's been proven countless times. also, your body absorbs food better and functions better when it's hydrated. drink some fruits and vegetable juices as well. i keep orange juice, apple juice, and V8 in my fridge at all times, and alternate that with water.

course i drink beer/alcohol/soda too, but we're not discussing that at the moment.

also, there are some good healthy dinners that are inexpensive and easy to make, like chili or pasta, which also reheat very well the next day. i suggest making these types of things when you have a bit of time to cook at night. that way you have a good meal to reheat for lunch or whatever the next day. pasta salads work too.

Maybe your body is feeling very hungry because you're not giving it enough nutrients. So your brain is mistaking nutrient neediness for hunger.

Produce is very cheap. Buy whatever meat is on sale. Actually buy whatever healthy is on sale. Since you don't live alone buy sale items in bulk then freeze them for later use. Buying a whole chicken is much cheaper then debone it and you have sliced chicken for sandwiches or other meals.

If you really want your ramen still put some corn, broccoli, carrots, bean sprouts, cayenne spice and/or chicken/beef in it. Makes is actually nutritious and will be much more filling. Ramen by itself has no nutrients in it at all. Plus, its full of sodium which only makes you feel boated but really thirsty.

I call these "fat cycles," I get the same pattern. In fact, thanks to holiday pigging out, I'm in the middle of a fat cycle now. A fat cycle happens when you overeat for a few days in a row. Your body gets used to that high level of calories and just starts to crave food all the time. It takes several days of light eating in a row to curb the metabolism and get the body back to being used to only a light amount of calories. Those days of getting back on track are miserable, cause grouchiness, and usually have to be inspired by some unpleasant number jumping up from the scale.

Of course, this is my own personal theory which has no scientific basis at all. But, trust me, I do feel your pain!

Yes! Drinking enough water is very important! I can't stress that enough.

Try grazing on healthy foods. I basically eat whenever I'm hungry, but I just try to keep the meals/snacks healthy. Easy quick good things to eat are: cut up veggies, frozen berries (YUM!) or fresh ones, fruit, granola, yogurt, etc.

ETA: Whenever I feel like I'm going through one of those "fat" cycles, I feels so much better when I pick a day to eat only COMPLETELY healthy things to 'flush out' my system, like mainly fruits and veggies.

Can you take home or buy at a discount some "clearance" food from the store?

This is serious- as someone else pointed out, you probably ran through your stored nutrients and fat and your body needs to replace all of that. & If you're in your mid-twenties your body may be trying to "finish" its maturation...It needs fuel for this.

For the most part, I agree with others' statements that you are probably not getting enough nutrients. If I were you, I'd spend a bit more time learning to cook basic things, and eliminate processed food from your diet completely. A good rule of thumb is, if a food item has a list of ingredients more than a few lines long and/or that you can't pronounce, don't eat it. This rules out Slim Fast and ramen.

From the way you describe it, you're eating waaaay too much sugar, or simple carbs that immediately turn into sugar (such as ramen). The "sugar rush" phenomenon makes you feel hungry, especially for more sugar. Stop eating sweets when you're hungry. You can include sweets as a treat or dessert, but eating sugary food with the goal of eliminating hunger is pretty much counterproductive. This includes Balance bars and the like.

Now here's the weird part which many may disagree with. I think you should make an effort to eat all-natural, full-fat foods, such as cheese, yogurt, and butter. Fat makes you feel full longer, and full-fat foods tend to have less garbage in them, as fat is a binder and a texturizer. Don't believe me? Compare the ingredients of low-fat sour cream to those of full-fat sour cream, or, haha, Egg Beaters to those of real eggs. I have this belief that natural fat is not bad for you. I eat no artificial fat (i.e. hydrogenated oils) whatsoever, and yet I eat a rather high-fat diet. I have never been more than 5-6 lbs overweight, and in fact, I only put on weight when I eat at restaurants and thus relinquish control over exactly what goes into my food. If I stop eating restaurant food and prepared foods entirely, I drop the weight in days.

But that's a tangent. The point is, eat whole foods.* This does not have to be expensive, but it will require a bit of cooking and/or preparation on your part. Here is a brief list of some of the cheapest whole foods I like to keep on hand, because they are tasty, nutritious, not too difficult to prepare, and generally quite versatile.

    -carrots
    -celery
-canned tomatoes (for soups, sauces, chili)
    -tomato paste
-beans (canned or dried, canned is quicker but has more sodium, dried takes a while, but is also cheaper)
-rice (go for brown rice, but white rice isn't too bad in moderation if you absolutely hate brown)
    -eggs
    -onions
-garlic (garlic the plant, not garlic the powder, and not the kind that comes pre-chopped in jars either. Real garlic is very good for you.)
    -oatmeal
    -frozen corn
    -frozen peas
-frozen spinach, turnip greens, collard greens, etc. (sometimes frozen is the easiest way to get decent leafy green veggies, and it's almost always the cheapest)
-plain yogurt (I recommend plain because it's the easiest way to find yogurt that contains nothing but milk and live active cultures. You can add your own sweetener if desired)
-brown sugar and/or honey and/or blackstrap molasses (brown sugar is cheapest, honey is the most versatile, molasses is sometimes really inexpensive and has purported health benefits, but it tastes weird to some people)
-pasta (whole-wheat is the best choice, but I won't blame you for choosing regular pasta)
    -natural peanut butter
    -prunes and/or raisins
    -milk
    -cheese
    -bananas
-some decent type of bread made without high fructose corn syrup or bleached enriched flour (check the bakery section of your grocery store... sometimes the best and most affordable bread is the store-made rye or whole wheat)
-whatever meat is on sale and looks halfway decent
-fresh fruit in season for snacking
-nuts, if you like them and can afford them, also for snacking
-whole snack foods, such as pretzels
-fruit juice, fresh or frozen, with no added sugar

From the list I just gave you, you are able to snack easily, and make the following very easy-to-cook dishes:

-all-natural smoothie for breakfast or lunch
-hot breakfast cereal (either oatmeal or rice) with dried fruit
-sandwiches with cheese, veggies, and/or meat
-chili (tomato-based, with beans and corn)
-tomato sauce for pasta, from scratch
-soup (assuming the meat you buy has bones and you're willing to make a stock)
-stir-fry (meat & veggies over rice)

...and a whole bunch more but I can't think of them right now. If you're reasonably certain that the thing you're cooking will not turn out gross, go ahead and make a double portion, and freeze half of it. You'll thank yourself next week when you don't feel like cooking. And take your leftovers with you to work for lunch! I always do this, whether I'm going to school or the strip club. I have a tupperware full of leftovers, a fork and a paper towel in my purse. I also take ziploc bags full of pretzels and nuts, and I frequently have a piece of fruit or 2 somewhere on my person. I look like a weirdo sometimes, but I never have to resort to eating fast food because I am OMG so hungry right now.

Good luck! I know these are some big dietary changes, but it's not that hard to do, because real food tastes good. It does. You will not need a lot of spices to prepare natural food for yourself, or even a ton of condiments. Butter, salt, pepper, soy sauce, and hot sauce should cover all your bases. I am pretty sure that by eating natural food, you will start to feel more control over your hunger immediately.

*"Whole food" does not just mean things like carrots and lentils. It can mean things like aggregate whole foods, such as sourdough pretzels, or certain ice creams. Basically, each ingredient has to be in a somewhat natural state, unadulterated by chemical processes.
