    Default docked puppy tails/cropping ears

Why would anyone do this to a pet? Apparently, my puppy's breed is usually born with a cropped tail, but if not, it should be done by a vet. My puppy has a cute tail, I would never cut it off!
And cutting off a dog's ears...why? Whoever made up that rule was a moron. It sounds just a cruel as declawing a cat. And I think cropped ears look stupid. My puppy has big beautiful ears. He looks like dumbo and I wonder if he could fly away with them they are so big.

Anyway. Why is this done? I understand they made it a rule for show dogs, which I think s dumb, but why woudl people do it to their pet? To make their pit bull look meaner? What a stupid reason.

Whoever decided that certain breeds shouldn' have ears or a tail should speak with the puppy maker of the unioverse. If the great puppy maker didn' think dogs should have ears or tails he wouldn't have given them.

I've heard that long ears can cause health complications for some breeds. Here's what Wikipedia has to say on it...

"For dogs who worked in fields, such as some hunting dogs and some herding dogs, tails could collect burrs and foxtails, causing pain and infection; tails with long fur could collect feces and become a cleanliness problem; and particularly for herding dogs, longer tails could be caught in gates behind livestock. These arguments are often used to justify docking tails for certain breeds, although the same rationale is not applied to all herding or to all hunting dogs with long or feathered tails.

Many hunting dogs’ tails are docked to prevent them from becoming injured while running through thickets and briars while fetching hunters' prey. The few hunting breeds that are not docked, including English Pointers and the Setter breeds, may have chronic injuries to the tips of their tails. Such injuries cause continuing pain and discomfort and are at risk of infection throughout their lives.

The practice of cropping dogs' ears and cropping their tails is controversial. Studies show that dogs severely docked tails are twice as likely to be involved in aggressive attacks as dogs with longer tails; likewise for dogs with severely cropped ears.[citation needed] However, dogs with cropped ears might make better guard dogs for this reason.[citation needed] Cropped ears and docked tails are less likely to be injured or infested with parasites than long ears and tails. Some owners simply believe cropped ears and docked tails are more appealing than the natural ears and tails that some dogs possess.

In many breeds whose tails (or whose ancestors' tails) have been docked over centuries, such as Australian Shepherds, no attention was paid to selectively breeding animals whose natural tail was attractive or healthy[citation needed] – or, in some cases, dogs with naturally short (or bob) tails were selectively bred but inconsistently (since docking was done as a matter of course, a natural bob did not have an extremely high value). As a result, in many of these breeds, naturally short tails can occur, but medium-length and long tails also occur. Occasionally, tails have developed with physical problems or deformities because the genetic appearance was never visible or because of the inconsistent emphasis on natural bobs[citation needed]. Breeders often consider many of the resulting tails to be ugly or unhealthy and so continue to dock all tails for the breed."

I think for the most part it is completely unnecessary and cruel, especially when people do it b/c it makes the dog look 'cuter' or whatever. It originated from hunters coping the ear/tails of their hunting dogs to prevent injury/infection while running around in the woods. Also to lessen the chance of parasites.

There are a lot of vets that refuse to do docking/cropping now. Though I saw quite a few dogs that were the victims of their owners trying to do it themselves(usually by wrapping a rubber band around until everything below it died)..horrible.

They arent necessary anymore for ANY reason and should be outlawed

There's no reason for cropped ears but I do know some tails on dogs need docked because they whack them around so much out of eagerness that they start bleeding to death from their tails hitting things. It happened to a dog I knew. Well, we ended up docking his tail before it got too bad, but yeah, it had to be done or he'd have killed himself.

When we got our puppy from the humane society, his tail was already docked. As I result, I've nicknamed him Nubby Poo aka Nubster.

My friend decided not to crop her boxer's ears, which I'm glad to hear.

my great dane had a huge hematoma in his floppy ear and the vet had to remove it, they explained it is very common and a reason for ear cropping.

Something i am quilty of. My Pit/Chow had his ears done as a pup. And i had my share of Dobermans over the years, only one i never had the ears cropped.

On the Pit Bulls is common to crop ears and leave the tail long.

I now don't need a dog that has been altered. I believe in letting them be the way they are born at this point.

My daughters friend crops his own Pits ears at 1 day old at home, she told me once.
Sick person we both agreed on.

He was busted not long after for setting up a fighting ring. Explains the tight cropped ears.

England has banned altering dogs ears/tails.

I had my boxer's tail docked per the advice of several "dog people" who told me that the way her tail was, it would grow long and hard and become very destructive, as in clearing tables and hitting you in the legs, etc. I didn't have her ears done, but after numerous ear infections I can see why some floppy eared dogs typically have their ears cropped.

It's a decision you make with your vet and with your family and house in mind. I didn't feel bad at all about it. She was put out for the docking and only seemed in pain for the first day or two, and that was remedied with the pain meds given to us by the vet. Now she's such a huge pain in the ass that I'm glad that's one less thing I have to deal with about her.

My brother-in-law had a Doberman, and he never cut her tail or ears. She never had any problems with infections. She just didn't look as fierce as you expect Dobermans to look. She used to climb up in my lap and sit there like a much smaller dog would do.

She's gone to doggy heaven now.

Yup. The dog I mentioned in my story was a boxer. They end up hitting walls and causing horrific bleeding from the tail. They hurt people and themselves.

People do it because it "looks" tougher or stronger...I have two power breeds a pitbull and a doberman and I love their floppy ears and wouldn't change them for anything. Their tails as well...sometimes it feels like whips when they're happy to see me but it's not worth cutting off their body parts off.

The only dogs I've ever had that had docked tails were hunting dogs. No need for it otherwise.

Our german short haired pointers had their tails docked because that's de riquer for the breed. But I don't remember how it was done, I was too young and had no say.

When I got my poodle she had a docked tail. I'm not sure why but she came that way. I certainly wouldn't have done it if she hadn't had it docked already.

I own a trained hunting dog, but I would never consider mutilating her for better field performance. Her tail is whippier than most Beagles', and apparently her former owner considered docking a few inches of her tail to compensate. I was irate at finding this out, and I'm so glad she's in better care now.

I had a beagle with no tail as a child. I didn't know how or why he had no tail..but he also had 3 legs, and I had assumed he lost his tail the same way he lost his leg. I dunno. But now knowing it is common for hunting dogs...it makes sence why he had no tail.

Thank you for giving me a better understanding. For dogs that injure themselves, or hunting dogs, it makes sense. But just for the "cool" appeal. I still thin k it's crap

There might have been some reasons of sorts under different conditions, but it is hard to imagine any reasoning that would apply to a house pet.

Maybe she just wasnt the right dog for you. A lot of people need to put WAY more research into what breed is best for them before they get a dog rather then try ot make the dog fit them after the fact

I know plenty of boxer owners who didnt dock and dont have a problem. They took stuff off tables and low shelves. No problem with the tail sweeping things off.

IF there is a problem..then fine. But doing it because they MIGHT have a problem in the future(and the percentage that do are actually pretty low) is cruel. Thats just as sane as shaving your head because you MIGHT have to have chemo someday.

I firmly believe there is a special place in hell for people like that. How horrible, cruel and ignorant.

We have a boxer, and when we got him we decided not to get his ears cut. It just seemed pointless since we weren't going to show him (he only had one testicle, so that was out! lol). He looks so much friendlier with big, floppy ears anyway.... they go with his personality, as weird as that sounds. He is big, goofy, clumsy and would never hurt anyone- unless they were attacking me.

LOL- boxers are pains in the ass, aren't they? I love mine, but he doesn't know his own size or strength, and he has the worst separation anxiety I've ever seen. He doesn't even like it when I leave him alone to check the mail. I love him anyway, but he's pretty annoying.
