    Modeling Portfolio Costs

I am thinking about getting some professional photos done to try and get a portfolio together. Modeling and acting have always been an interest of mine but I've never really pursued it. Anway, there is a good local photographer (stewartsmithphotography.com if you feel like checking him out) that has done photos for various girls I've worked with ( a couple who are now in playboy) and I'm thinking about going through him. His pictures look great to me and he's supposed to be helpful with hooking girls up with agents and whatnot. I'm just wondering what are average costs for a good photographer, these are the rate posted on his site (he's running a special through april 1st...thats what the normally and now prices are). He seems worth it but I've never had any photos done so I don't really know whats typical.

    Head Shot special...........Normally $250.00...........Now $200.00
    1/2 day shoot..................Normally $500.00.............Now $400.00
    Full day shoot.................Normally $800.00...........Now $700.00

It sounds like you feel really good about this, and I say go with your gut. Here's just some other things to think about:

Go in a have a look at his headshot/modeling portfolio first just to make sure you're happy with his work in that particular area and that you feel comfortable with him. Can he show you a variety of shots of just one model as well (as in a proof sheet)?

Yes, I think the prices are good and he's good (you pay for what you get), but when he says head shot special, how many pictures is he talking about? Are any prints included in that? (Sometimes photographers include a free 8X10 or whatever -- not super important but good to know up front.) It's great that he puts all the photos online for you. Can you make your own prints from that through the company of your choice or do you go through him? Again, how many pictures on average does he take during the special, the 1/2 day shoot and the full day shoot? How many wardrobe changes does he allow?

And, after the photos are taken, will he spend time with you going over the photos? It's always good to know what the photographer feels are the best photos and why.

I recommend doing trade for prints with an art-school kid. There are tons of aspiring photographers on Model Mayhem, some of whom are very good (but many of whom are not, of course, because anyone can join). My BF, for example, went to school for animation and digital imaging, and he does fashion shoots in his free time, because he likes to look at pretty girls, and he loves to play with photoshop. Anyway, there are tons of professionally-trained photographers out there who are looking to build their portfolio. I would say that before you spend your hard-earned money, try getting prints for free. If you're unhappy with what an amateur comes up with, you can always pay for prints next time.

You are a good stripper so I don't have to warn you to use your common sense when selecting a photographer... obviously there are going to be some sketchy photogs who just want to see you naked, but you'll be able to sniff out their game. But try an art-school student! I recommend them highly.

Yeah I was going to recommend TFP also. You're a hot mama, there should be tons of good starting-out photogs who need to pad their own portfolios and would be delighted to trade services with you. That's what I would do. MM is a good place to start looking. Please post your experiences, whatever you choose to do!

Do TFPs. No one should ever pay for portfolio pics.

^I agree 100%. I've never paid fr pics, and I have built up a very nice portfolio that has gotten me many, many paid jobs. Hell, my free portfolio got me into Maxim's hometown hotties...

Yeah... I'm still collecting photos for my portfolio, and I haven't paid a cent for any of my pics.

You can do it for free. You may get lucky at the start or you may plow through 10 flaky experiences before you get one that sticks.

For quick results that have the highest likelihood of getting the job done, see a professional.

You can apply those two preceding paragraphs to many things in life: Getting a website done, getting taught something, getting something assembled or built, getting a portfolio. Whatever.

I say that as a photographer who has helped a number of girls get some pretty good beginning shots for no charge.

It depends on how much time you have. Just like a person should come into a strip club expecting to spend a little, a person who wants pro well lit shots , editing, and retouching should expect to spend a little. Keep in mind how much time it may take to get just a few good shots while using a non-pro photographer. You might find that you would actually save time and money by going to a professional ! Also consider your other costs such as transportation , pro tanning, and pro makeup. If your selcted amateur doesn't have quality back up equipment for example or simply flakes at the last minute as anyone easily might if you were not getting paid ..... you could be out 1. your time ( I already brought this up ) and 2 . more money since you'll have to pay for tanning and makeup again.

I asked my BF to look up some Maine photographers on model mayhem and recommend one whose work he liked. I have no idea where in Maine you live, or if this guy is close to you, or whether or not he's a jerk, but my BF seems to think his work is very good. I believe he does TFP.

TFP doesn't have to mean amature. I have worked with many, many photog's who are very pro, have been published on many areas, but still need to keep their port current, and willt rade TFp with exceptional models. This does require experience, because they don;t want to waste time posing and schooling a new model, but if the look is right they are willing to bend their requirments.
It's all about researching and choosing the right guy, and knowing what to look for and ask for during a TFP.

I use to source models for my advertising. It really comes down to whether or not you allow the photogs to shoot you nude. Not porn, but nudes and such which they can market and sell. It should not be difficult to find a good pro in your area that will help you in exchange for pics. In many cases, if you shoot nude, they will pay you.

I feel guilty not paying my models, and I DON'T shoot nudes. But they help me sell and make money.

    Good Luck

if yoru making money off a trade that's fucked up. I would never shoot with a guy for trade if he was profiting off my pics.

What is he supposed to do with the pics? I'm not arguing, just asking.

If she gets good port pics to market herself, she got her end of the bargain. If he's a professional who, instead of paying a model $200, gives her a $400 portfolio package for free and puts his copy of her pics on a calendar, is that not OK?

^I was wondering the same thing. I did a trade with a newbie photographer who needed models to help him build his portfolio, and also so he could use the pics for later to help him open up a new professional photo studio with his friend. Well, the studio is now open for business, and he is currently charging people for photoshoots, and using my pics on his website to advertise. They're probably on display in the studio as well. Is that not okay? I did sign a Model Release Form stating that he could have rights to my photos?

    LOL...No, you misunderstood....

I pay all of the models....for all of the shoots, even though many will do it for free.

If it is a trade is it usually to boost both of your portfolios. If a photog is directly profiting off the pics, the model should get a cut as well.

At the very least, the model should KNOW he is planning to sell her pics and sign off on that. Otherwise a girl could all of a sudden see a picture of herself on a billboard that she had no idea was coming.
