Default Would you go to a Beautician with Acne?

Just curious. I have acne-prone skin. not really 'acne' but can break out without fail every month.
I am doing a beauty course soon and am feeling nervous around the other girls, taking make up off etc..and then wondering would clients feel comfortable around me if my skin wasn't 100%?

If youre going to be an estetician then you really need to get it under control because I (personally) wouldnt go get my skin care needs taken care of from someone who has acne. But everyone has preferance.

An example : I wouldnt go to a dentist who had black and missing teeth or a hairdresser who has 3" of outgrowth and fried hair.

BUT if its just a few pimples or whiteheads no biggie. If its inflamed acute acne thats another story.

There are some great old-school cures for acne you can try before going the route of doctor-prescribed meds-

    * dietary changes- you are what you eat

    * egg yolk masques (use the egg white as a finisher, tightening masque)

    * a mix of Ivory soap and water- leave a film on your skin when able (doesn't work for everyone but it has a "drying" effect for acne)

    * in addition to all this, OTC benzoyl peroxide cream

I had horrific acne into my mid-twenties and the only cure was full-level birth control pills. IMO get this fixed because as a esthetician, your customers will be staring at you constantly during working hours- at the very least, you'll feel better about your appearance. & It is advertisement for your work.

Word... if it's random, mild breakouts caused by aunt flow, it's comepletely understandable (and typically not noticable to most everyone but you), but if it's something that looks like it needs to be seen by a dermatologist, customers will not see you as an authority on skincare.

If it's not full blown severe acne, just a few sporadic break outs that are mild, you shouldn't worry too much. If anything, there's ways of covering them up.

My skin has been pretty good for the past year or so, but I used to break out a lot. Going on the pill helped, as did getting chemical peels to get rid of some acne scarring/spotting that remained.

I broke out pretty badly a few days ago, I think because of stress, bad dieting, and poor sleep. I tried benzoyl peroxide medicine and it left my face really red and dry (but helped somewhat with the acne). I try lots of products and have a ton of different things, but my favorite that I forgot about is called egyptian magic. It is a salve, and is oily when you put it on, but I slept with this for a few nights, and the redness and acne totally went away. It lasts a really long time, and can be used for a lot of different things. I used to put it on before bed and sleep with it, then wash my face in the morning. My skin is oily and the product has olive oil, bees wax, honey bee pollen, royal jelly, and bee propolis, but it really is amazing. The super $ and high-end brands are crap compared to it.

Just something that worked for me.

Oh- also, I applied this to my bottom that was breaking out (I know girls have posted about this prob.) and it really, really helped.

    The website address is:

OH I forgot about this because it affects males more severely- cut bread (& refined carbs) out of your diet...seriously. There was a a study that basically clarified that "bad carbs" fuel the hormone that causes breakouts in hormone-laden humans (i.e., especially teenaged males.)

& Most advise NOT to use an abrasive puff on acne, but if your breakouts are sporadic, it can speed healing if you exfoliate and "encourage" the pimple to form a head, drain it and use cortisone cream & drying cream to make it disappear. This varies from person to person...I get cystic pimples everywhere EXCEPT my face now, probably from working naked in dirty strip clubs..OH the irony. So I just bust them and drain the follicle.

Edit to add- I know I'm going to town here on a simple issue, but the agony of acne is something I remember too vividly...Just trying to help.

I wouldn't be offended if the person looked really clean and like they took care of themselves but happen to be suffering from a pimple. Nobody can control that.

Really research the best products for your skin. I know the commercials are cheesy but proactive really does work and it's reasonable.

I had a dermatologist with some obvious acne scars. I didn't mind, figured she got into the specialty because she had struggled with her own skin problems.

At age 18, I went on Accutane for only 2 months, and it took care of any cystic acne. A few years later I did start getting zits again though, most courses are 3-6 months. Accutane is really harsh shit.

One thing that keeps my acne down is to always moisturize with an oil-free gel. Oh, and not falling asleep with makeup.

See, I hated ProActive but whats funny is the generic version you can buy at WalMart worked better.

Ive yet to find something that really works. I started getting acne when I was around 20/21. Adult acne is frustrating to deal with. Its somewhat expected as a teen... I didnt get my first pimple until I was an adult.

Depends on the acne - if you have a pimple, that's one thing, but no I probably wouldn't go to a beautician with actual acne. If she can't keep *her* skin clear, I would think, how can I trust her with mine?

I know the Cult of Lush can probably get excessively loud on this forum, but Coalface and Fresh Farmacy are amazing. I used Coalface just a couple of times during my premenstrual breakout this month, and it cleared up beautifully; to maintain pretty skin, I use Fresh Farmacy every other day and my complexion has never looked better, even with all the excessive stripper makeup (which usually wrecks my face). Coalface can be a bit too harsh for regular use so I would start with Fresh Farmacy and then go up to Coalface if FF isn't strong enough.

Not to mention a portion of your income will come from product sales. How can you expect to sell your product when it doesnt work on you?

I found that too! Proactiv blew. It was expensive and I could never keep makeup on my face while I was using it. My foundation would just slick right off. It was bizarre. The walmart brand (Acnefree, I think?) worked much MUCH better, didn't make my skin all strange-textured, and was cheaper. The only complaint I had about it was that you could really smell the sulphur in it, which was easily remedied by skipping the toner during the day and just using it at night when I was alone anyways.

I bought some coalface and fresh farmacy during the clean slate promo. I haven't tried my farmacy yet but I'm almost through the coalface bar and I love it! Even though I'm ridiculously hormonal-greasy the coalface actually does a passable job of keeping the oil under control. Plus, the little exfoliators are nice too. I ended up splitting the coalface bar with my mom and she loves it too. It must be good for young hormonal skin and older menopausal skin. Neither of us have been shiny since we started using the stuff.

Now I'm excited for when the coalface is gone and I can try the fresh farmacy.

To answer your question, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Hell, I can't remember ever getting my hair done by a stylist who actually had their own damn hair done!!! Why should the skin be any different?

Not dissing your skin, but what you look like doesn't mean you can't make me look great

Agreed! There are very few customers like you, Jayda... Most clients beleive that if a stylist can't make his or herself look good, how the hell is he or she going to make others look good? I feel that not looking my best behind the chair is unprofessional and counterproductive.

Omg , Acne can not always be controlled !! Missing teeth or black teeth are signs of poor hygiene and bad hair like you described is also someone not taking care of themselves ......Alot of adults with Acne have NO control over it and it should NOT affect they way they are viewed .

    I feel the same.

I had a dermatologist who had bad cratered skin(I guess before he became a derm) & he was the best. I stopped going to him bc I was on my dad's insurance at the time, and he didn't take mine.

Im sorry, I said I as in ME as in me personally and I believe that is exactly what I wrote. So if you dont like it too bad. Lemme quote it again for you. My thoughts = your product is supposed to clear my acne - if its so great why isnt it clearing yours? Thats how I think. How am I as a hairdresser supposed to sell someone frizz control cream if my hair is super frizzy? Theyd look at me like I was nuts.

i don't actually have active acne on my face, but it's true that even tho i can have my skin lokoing great and under control when i break out, i break out. the plus side is oily skin has kept me looking younger then i really am but when i do get a few spots i just hope clients wont feel uncomfortable around that. i'm also sure it's something that will eventually pass too tho.

i have been on accutane, was thinking of going on it again on a low dose.

I'm not really sure what kind of work exactly yr gonna be doing, but sure I'd see a makeup artist with acne (well I guess if she was good enough I wouldn't see it right) because an artist is an artist. Will you be doing facials? Even then, well maybe I'd be happier bc she would understand my needs.

If you are hawking acne products, then yea....no. But keep in mind that acne is such a common problem, and a good selling point when you are talking to ppl with acne prone skin, bc you have that problem too. I actually get kinda intimidated asking for makeup advice at a counter to a person with not-similar skin conditions. (But a prof. makeup artist is totally different)

I recently went to Sephora and asked the only available person about a good concealer....but this dude was obviously recovering from a bad facial peel....I mean like he had dark skin like Indian, but his face was BRIGHT RED and peeling, and I realized I'd better ask someone else.
