It helps if your laptop was not on when the water spilled. Just wait for it to dry out and see if it works. Has happened to me. If it was something other than water you would have to clean it.

Make sure its completely unplugged and no power. Take the battery out. Then the only thing you can really do is let it dry. You could open it up and with a Lint Free Cloth sponge off any water. You just have to pray that nothing shorted and fried. I dont reccommend opening it up unless you know what you are doing.

It was off when the water spilled but it wasn't much water at all. I took out the battery and blowdryed the whole thing for about five minutes. Also, how long did it take for your laptop to dry out space cadet?

That is great advice Magnum, but I don't want to open it up becauase I have no idea what I'm doing. I feel so bad because it's my boyfriends MAC notebook and I know that they are pretty expensive. Does anyone know if warrantee covers it, or if I can take it to a repair shop and get it fixed.

Depends on the warranty. On my laptop I have the special warranty that covers spills and drops. It covers everything.

Depending on how much water was spilled on it, the liquid can really ruin a laptop. Even if the laptop works OK after it dries off, there may be corrosion or other water damage that will eventually make the laptop stop working. Most computer warranties do not cover liquid damage. This warranty is usually at an additional cost.

I've seen repairs on liquid damage cost as much as the original laptop, if not more.

Yea, I paid extra to get a 'special' warranty that covers full replacement if needed. I can throw my laptop out the window and warranty covers it But I got the warranty thru Best Buy.

With Mac Im not so sure because typically they only have a Mac warranty. If I only had the HP warranty lots of stuff wouldnt be covered.

I hope the laptop is ok!

I think I waited a few days probably due to paranoia. You will be fine. Most people spill when laptop is still on and with coffee or beer or something and they still turn out OK. Since it was off very little chance of anything frying or short circuiting. I am sure you already have but get all the water out of the keyboard, turn it upside down, etc .. If you're in a hurry dismantle and use a fan or something. I don't think it's a big deal to dismantle the laptop but not necessary in your case because its just water. Test all the keys on the keyboard when it comes back up. I spilled something other than water and the laptop lived a very full life. DVD or CD player eventually failed.

I saw an IBM thinkpad that listed side drainage for spills as one of the features. For next laptop go for the built-in spill protection .

I would definitely wait 24 hours or so.

Look on the bottom of the laptop. Some models have drainage ports on the bottom (Lenovo/IBM ThinkPads and some Toshibas). Asus builds most of Apple's laptops, so I couldn't speak to them, but look for them.

Its good to hear it is a MAC though. Most macs tend to take things like that alot better. There is a story ( true ) of a school computer lab that got flooded and the comps set under 8 foot of water for a day and a half. The water went away and the comps dried out and worked perfectly. Hopefully nothing got screwed up on the inside. I would wait 2 days just to be on the safe side. May be paranoid but its worth it.

Yes extra insurance is always worth it. Ive gotten a laptop replaced cause it got thrown out a 3 story apartment window due to a very very angry 5 year old.

Haha... you musta made that baby super mad! Unfortunately when my last laptop kept f*cking up and going soooo slow and I punched the screen it was 2 weeks after the 3 year warranty ended! I still have it in a closet somewhere for some unknown reason.
