Default So i finally got a laptop, an dthen disaster

I bought a sony viao on friday from best buy. Didn't have enough cash on me to get them to download their anti-virus spyware protection stuff, so I took it back in on sunday to have them do all of that. I picked it up today right before the store closed, drove the 7 minutes back to my house, and then my computer didn't even turn on. The blue light at the bottom flashes, but none o fthe lights near the power button blink or anything. It also feels very hot now.

Right before I left the store I bought two year accident insurance, and the spyware protection and anti-virus stuff along with a restore cd cost $160. The computer itself was 1,140. The total came out to nearly 1,500 for everything, and now my 4 day old computer isn't even working.

I called geeksquad and not only was the guy very rude to me, he told me they'd only exchange it if the part that broke was a part they couldn't fix. Fix it or not, i don't want a computer that crapped out before I could even use it. I want a brand new untouched one, and I want them to re- install that syware virus stuff too for free. I may even want a whole different spyware virus protection package (is it possible a malfunction in theirs caused my computer to break?) This really sucks. So, I still have to use my roomates computer. This was supposed to be my first computer ever. I'm dissapointed.

    That sucks

I'm hating computers at the moment too, so I totally feel your computer pain.

Fawn, seems like you spent a lot on that laptop, especially on the extra services. Very few people buy everything best buy has when it comes to services.

Calmly, find out who the DCI (Deputy Counter Intelligence, the guy in charge of geeksquad in the store) or who the services manager is. Find out when they are in on a day you can go in. They work shifts. Explain the situation to them, don't worry about the CIAs (guys that work the desk at geek squad), there opinion usually means little.

Have you charged your laptop? What processor is in it? Some just run hot. A quick Google should turn up some reviews.

Also, most Best Buys do warranty repairs on laptops in the store if it is something they fix. That is what you purchased with those extra insurances. Often they can get it done in the same day if they know the customer is new, bought a lot of services, and needs their computer. The turn around time for the depot, is about 2 weeks minimum.

The only way you could get sony support is if you called sony directly.

Talk to management; you're well within your 14-day return rights for that product.

GeekSquad couldn't find their way out of a wet paper bag; their knowledge level is less than zero. Demand a working laptop.

That said, Sony's reliability in laptops absolutely sucks. Good luck.

Very true just bypass the counter guys. Most of them are just dumb. And they definetly dont know how to deal with people at all.

For future reference dont bother with the anti virus stuff. There is alot better and Free anti virus software avaliable on the net.

When I bought my last laptop at Best Buy it didnt work. The screen wouldnt turn on. I had also bought the extended warranty. I went to Best Buy and they exchanged it for a brand new comp. Id go talk to the manager. They have a 30 in-store exchange policy that covers the computer. THEN your warranty kicks in. The GeekSquad guy didnt know what the hell he was talking about.

    From the Best Buy website:

We don't fix it—we replace it
We give you a Best Buy gift card so you can choose your own product replacement. If you purchased the item in store, you can file a claim online. For all online purchases call 1-888-539-6883.

    Full Replacement
You get comprehensive coverage, with no deductibles or other hidden charges. If your product is found defective under normal usage, we will provide for a replacement.

That guy is a tool. Everyone here has given you great advice. Demand your refund, girl, you're entitled to it!

I purchased my laptop from Sam's Club because of their liberal return policy; Costco has a similar one. Management assured me I had up to 6 months to return my laptop if I had any problems with it. The way I saw it, if I had problems within the first 6 months there was no way I was sending it in for repair, I wanted a brand new one. Luckily, I had no problems.

It will work out for you, just be calm yet firm.

so, I caled again this morning, and the guy was like "I don't know why that happened, if it worked when you brought it in iy shouldn't happen. We didn't break it. It shouldn't have happened." Well, fuck, I know it shouldn't have happened, but it did. yes, now I'm going to have to drive to Austin to see the DCI or whatever it was, because the guy in San Marcos said this one only comes in a few times a month because it's a small store. Also, this si the second geek squad guy that was rude to me. It was the way he said that first part, ansd then he was like "I've got 5 or 6 people in line and any location you go to will have the same" in a really rude way. Fucker!

I would go in and complain about the rude GeekSquad guys. Those guys dont know what theyre talking about. I would call and ask to speak with the manager, complain about the rude service men and then tell them you want a replacement.

It obviously stopped working after THEY installed software on it so even tho it worked when you BOUGHT it THEY did something to make it stop working. Threaten with BBB - youll get a replacement.

If the people in the stores fail, then go to the corporate side, they almost always take customer side.

Also if you have to go off site to handle a geek squad issue, go straight for the store manager.

I've never seen a geek squad get away with giving back a computer that is not working.

Hey unplug the computer from the wall, remove the battery, then put it back on ac power, see if it works. Then try it with the battery. I'm thinking unless it is seriously wrong they used the battery when they did their work.

Also do not let them use up your 14 days!

    Fawn,

    Am I missing something here?
On the back of your receipt, their warranty policy should be well laid out on what you can do with your purchase. It literally is a "no-questions-asked return/exchange on all electronic products for 14 days". Is there something stopping you from changing it for another? If this store in particular is being a bitch, I'd drive to another just slightly out of town and exchange it there.

Despite that, Sony Vaio's don't typically cost you this much in repairs until just after you've had them long enough to depend on them.
People are not ruled by their memories.

Call the customer service line and complain. Also mention the names of the people who were rude to you. You absolutely should be able to get a replacement since you just bought it. Your computer not working after 4 days and them refusing to fix it is fucking bullshit.

Honestly, I WORK for BBY and I would not take a computer to Geek Squad. They used to be a local Minneapolis outfit with fantastic service, and now they've been blue-shirted with the usual morons that inhabit the stores. When I needed a laptop fixed, I took it to a local shop.

I went to another location and spoke to the manager. He called another store, there is only one left like thi scomputer in austin, so I'm going to have to drive way north to pick it up. Yeah, the warrenty said 14 day's and that's what I was saying to Geek Squad, and they kept giving me shit. The manager at the other store was very helpful. Hopefully thsi will be the only problem I have. Thanks everyone for the advice.
