    Angry Eyelash Allergy?

I love wearing fake lashes at work. I feel so sexy and strippery in them, and I do make more money wearing them. I've never had a problem with them before; I wore them every day Tuesday through Saturday in Montana, removed them at the end of the night with baby oil, no sweat. I also wore them in L.A. without a problem.

Since moving to Oregon, I can't wear them anymore. I wore them once, my eyelids puffed up HUGE and turned red. Took a few days off, tried them again, same thing. The swelling takes about a day and a half to go away but the skin on my eyelids stays loose and crusty for days afterward. It's the same brand of lashes, same brand of glue, same brand of application. Nothing's changed except I'm in Oregon now. WTF?? Do I have to give up my purty lashes for good?

Try a different brand and pray?

Allergies are common here. I know lots of folks who've moved from here to LA and have had their allergies go away once they're away from here. I don't know if it is the case, but maybe you have a mild case where it's exacerbated by the eyelashes? Also we have indoor smoking here.

That sucks though. Maybe some eye drops would help.

Do they puff up and turn red when the eyelashes are on? If it's only afterwards, I'd suggest an eyelid scrub. I might even suggest it anyway. I used to have a hard time wearing mascara even because my eyelids were so sensitive. What I had is blepharitis. But I started doing eyelid scrubs (they make products for it but you can also use baby shampoo) and it went away. Now I don't have a problem with any eye makup or fake lashes. I'm not sure it's the same problem, but I don't think it would hurt.

It's not in my eye, it's the skin on my eyelids. My eyes themselves are fine, and underneath my eyes it's not puffy or red. It's my eyelids themselves that swell up huge and turn pink, and they get all crusty where they meet my lashes. I'm definitely removing all the glue, so it's the skin and not leftover glue.

I'll try that baby shampoo thing. How often did you do it? You just wash your eyelids with baby shampoo after taking the lashes off or what?

Yikes. My dad developed blepharitis after he got a nasty case of shingles on his eye (I know, weird place to get a shingles outbreak.) This was years ago and he still does the eyelid wash with baby shampoo or the skin gets really irritated and red. I don't think that's what you have either, but it doesn't hurt to try it.

Personally I experienced eye, skin and hair problems when I moved from the country to the city years ago. The same is true when I return to the country for visits. I bet your eyes are just getting used to a new climate.

Maybe you have developed a sensitivity to the latex in the adhesive (if you're using one of the more common adhesives). There are latex-free ones you can try but they are a little harder to find.

    Hm, that's a possibility. I'll go hunting.

Just so weird that I could wear them every day for weeks on end and not have a problem, and now I can't wear them for a couple hours. It's weird.

I would do it when I woke up and when I went to bed.

Like Susan mentioned, it's not uncommon to develop an allergy to something that never bothered you before. It's possible that it's the product, and has nothing to do with Oregon, especially if there's latex in the adhesive. Is there such a thing as eyelash glue for sensitive skin, or latex-free glue? I'd try that.

The National Institute of Health says: "Repeated exposure to a protein in natural latex can make you more likely to develop a latex allergy." Read more:

Same damn thing happened to me and I didn't even move to a new city! I figured out it wasn't a latex allergy (BTW, good luck finding a latex free lash adhesive... The only one I ever found that weren't meant for semi permanent adhesion was discontinued) it was the formaldehyde... I switched to Shu Uemura and I haven't swollen up since- well, except for that one time I forgot my Shu at home and had to use the club's MUA Duo.

So I found a latex-free formaldehyde-free eyelash glue (ModLash) and decided to try again. It's a pain in the ass to put on - somehow it's thick and runny all at the same time. It's very difficult to get it off with baby oil since it hardens into a crystalline rock substance, and last night it ripped out a huge chunk of my natural eyelashes! So there goes that. Just thought I'd pass it on if anyone else was thinking of trying it.

^^^ that's because ModLash is for individule, semi-permanant false lash applications... I'm telling you, try the Shu!

This is the only formaldehyde/latex free lash glue I've found that is not for semi-perm applications...

Good news is it hasn't been discontinued... bad news is, you're actually paying $14 for the half strip lashes, so the tube of lash glue is ridiculously tiny!!! Also, first ingredient is MMA, which like formaldehyde, can penetrate skin and cause an irritation/allergy in the future.

    Just get the Shu.

Okay. I'll look for that then. Is it at Sephora or what?
