Default US approves animal clones as food

The US government has given the green light to the production and marketing of foods derived from cloned animals.

After six years of study, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ruled that meat and milk from cloned pigs, cattle and goats and their offspring is safe.

I hope they don't start cloning fish.

"The FDA will not require food derived from cloned animals to be labelled as such."

    haha niiiiice.

With the small breeding groups in commercial farms, they've basically been cloned for the last 30 years.

I guess I need to know what the real risk is if any. We already breed animals with the sole purpose of killing them for food. Cloning is used to select the initial DNA, but cloned animals still need to grow up and eat the same food as non-cloned animals before being slaughtered for food. We already apply a lot of genetics to farmed vegetables. /shrug. Emotionally? Something seems disturbing, but intellectually it is really hard to come up with anything specifically wrong.

Exactly what I was thinking! When I buy meat I buy free range chicken and beef without antibiotics/hormones because I'm already freaked out. This cloning stuff is just too crazy. I'd be afraid to eat ANY products from a cloned animal. I've been eating a lot of tofu and tempeh lately anyway...

Thank you. I needed that to stop the total fucking insane freak-out that was bubbling up inside of me upon reading this. I'm not too good with logic when emotions are involved. I can always count on you x.

I think there should be an option on the poll that says "I'm going to become a vegetarian." Vegan, even... they're talking about milk from cloned cows as well.

Just make sure you aren't eating genetically modified fruits and veggies. Apparently tomatoes sliced with fish DNA stay red on the shelf longer.

Something about it bothers me emotionally. I can't put my finger on it though.

Maybe it's just the good old fear that science has outpaced the morality questions.

Or maybe it is that reading things like this remind me of something I'd rather not be made aware of. That being, we already breed animals for the sole purpose of killing them to eat - something that I'd rather not know when I'm enjoying my food stuffs. Cloning makes it all sound so impersonal (but the reality is, growing animals for food already is).

Maybe it is something else. Maybe I fear that cloned meat is somehow going to harm me, but intellectually if I eat some beef, and it is good, why would I care if the next burger comes from the same cow? Be it the same actual cow, or a clone of the same cow? And it's all just proteins, fats, etc., as far as my body is concerned.

I am wondering what people 20 years from now will think.

I will just start to eat less and less meat. And actually stick to it.

It just sounds like something I dont want to mess with.

Um, what exactly is so wrong with eating meat from cloned animals? We eat cloned vegetables. We plant cloned seeds in our home gardens. I mean, I understand that it's "creepy," but beyond that, why is it gross?
Drought was over. Where was I? Drinks were on the house.

I select the option that is not available - I would purchase meat with no preference for cloned or uncloned meat. I'm also against the whole organic food movement. If all vegetables and fruits were only organic, it wouldn't be possible to grow enough food for the world's population. Fertilizers and the like are necessary to stave off destruction of crops by insects, disease, and the like. Advances in technology are not always a bad thing.

The fact that it's new, untested technology and cloned animals all die young of weird diseases is off-putting. Nothing is wrong with natural good food, so it's understandable that corporate America's continuous fucking around with poison has made a lot of people uneasy.

There would be absilutely no difference between cloned and uncloned meat, any more than there is a difference between a plant and it's cutting.

    I wouldn't care either way.

EXACTLY. Everybody go do some research... clones ALWAYS die young. Their health is poor and there has been very little research done on the effects of eating cloned meat so we are essentially going to be human guinea pigs.

Civilization will be the downfall of civilization.

Now why oh WHY won't they label the damn meat? Profits. The meat industry is horribly fucking corrupt and I refuse to buy any inorganic, pasture-fed meat.
