    Non Accutane Cures?

Okay, so I have nodules and cystic acne on my chin, moderately. I want to get rid of them obviously, but, I am unwilling to use Accutane, or, any oral antibiotics.

Have any of you found success for this kind of acne using topical stuff?

I have found that basic benzoyl peroxide/salicylic acid doesnt do much for this kind of acne.

^Cystic acne starts at such a deep layer under the skin that topicals aren't going to do much of anything. The other option, if you can't do accutane or antibiotics, is to get your hormones under control. Certain types of birth control pills can help with this.

I know it's Lush, but really works wonders. There are mixed reviews on but I've been using that and it's cleared my skin up a lot, though I don't have cystic acne. You could see if one of those works before trying Accutane - a little Lush can't hurt and might save you from Accutane Hell!

Zabrina's right--deep blemishes on the chin area are hormonal. Othro Tri-Cylclen and Yasmin are both birth control pills that could help.

yeah, mine are all on my chin. damn. i'm on BC now, have been since i was in 9th grade(for acne before i even got my period). I tried Ortho-tri cyclen, and it gave me migraines(too high a level of hormones), but I never tried Yasmin. The one im now now, has helped a lot, but not completely.

Guess i'll have to have a talk with my doctor. My problem is i have yet to actually find an OB/GYN that knows about that aspect of BC :-s

I've found Yasmin has helped with my cystic acne, but I also do the oil cleansing method, my skin has never been so clean and soft and clear, ever. There's a few threads on it floating about.

Because all birth control pills regulate hormones, they should all have similar efficacy for clearning up acne. Yaz and Ortho have undergone the expensive testing in order to get FDA approval to make the claim that they help acne, but they are essentially no different from most other estrogen-progesterone pills.

The shit is once you get off BC pills, they come back up. I need to control my hormones somehow too. I keep saying i'm going to try acupuncture to see how that works, but once I have the money for it.

I've read on the acne board from women who've said that it has helped a lot with thier hormornal acne.

Just for the record, Ortho-Cyclen is one of those birth control pills that's supposed to cure acne. I went on it my freshman year of college, and suffered HORRIBLE cystic acne, which I've never had otherwise. I looked like one of the guys from Planet Terror. It was disgusting. When I switched to a different pill it went away, thank G-d.

So it was the Ortho-Cyclen that made you break out?

I tried that one before, but I don't remember much. Took it for a week, bc the skin under my eyes turned yellow & something else. I forgot what else made me stop.

The type of BC pills that help or make acne worse is going to vary person to person. I liked ortho-tri-cyclen and thought it helped with breakouts, though it certainly did not cure or stop them. Ultimately I went off orth-t-c because of spotting between cycles.

It's pretty much a guessing game to see what pill will help or flare you up, the right answer is different for everyone. Sometimes new pills will make you worse before you get better, too.

I love the oil cleansing method, but it can make some people's cystic acne worse. So be careful!

edited to delete my unnecessary embarrassing story!

I know you stated that you didn't want to take oral antibiotics, but I'll leave this bit of info. here, if in case you decide to consider it in the future. I was prescribed Minocycline by my primary care physician. It cleared my skin right up.

Oral antibiotics were one of my last options.

    Good luck.

Yep, I was afraid of that but it hasn't with me (thank f&%k!). I do it a little different though, I use pure coconut oil (which is solid but melts on contact) and massage it in (over makeup) for about 5 mins, then put a really hot facecloth over my whole face until it cools, i do this a few times or until i feel clean, or not greasy, then gently wipe any makeup residue off. In the morning I just wash with water or if my skin is bad dr huashka's cleansing cream (I love their stuff, it makes your skin glow, but it wouldn't clear mine up) and then a tiny bit of wheatgerm oil (or pure e oil) on dry spots or pimples and follow with the body shops vitamin c skin boost. And voila, hellacious acne is a thing of the past Oh, I also use cold green tea as a toner when i remember (not often) and use apple cider vinegar once a week, or more if i gots spots.

My cure is using Ortho-Cyclen Low. Not regular Ortho-Cyclen because that made it worse. I have to use the low hormone version. I also follow the skin care regimen on this site www.acne.org. It's inexpensive and works pretty well for me. I also only use mineral makeup. I still get some acne right before I start my period but nothing like I used to get in high school. Good Luck!
