Default Question on Fair Percentage to Pay Out

Right now I'm at a building club and have been given the opportunity to help write the operating procedures for the club. As I approach the tip-out portion, I'd like to get an idea of approximately what you think is a fair percentage of you earnings for a club to take for tipout (DJ, House Mom, Floor Staff) and House Fees. Would really be interested in your input.

    Thanks

Well, nightly earnings vary a lot, but I would say if total fees stay below 20% most of us are happy. I am not a fan of the percentage system unless it is one flat tipout that gets spread around to everyone. In fact, I would be really, really happy if, instead of having to go around paying a housefee and tipping out a DJ, floorguy, housemom, etc., I could just stick 15-20% of the night's take in a bucket and have it split up between everyone.

I am pretty happy with the fees at my current club. House is free-$30 depending on shift and time of arrival. We only have to tip a DJ and the floorguys, and it's a $10 minimum to the DJ and a $10 minimum to the bouncers (split between them, not each). So I pay out anywhere from $20-$70 depending.

I don't like percentages. It's not like the manager works any harder when I bust my ass. Plus I don't think its anyone else's business what I make.

Flat rates like $5 or a $10min is much preferred.

I don't have a set-in-stone system by any means, but generally I give out minimums/normals, or up to 10% of my take with pref given to who helps me make it. For example, tonight was real good, made a grand, so I look at that and consider... the mom didn't even lock up my gear, the DJ didn't do anything as I didn't dance stage, the waitress went above and beyond, and the cash cage guy, well, he was there. So I gave the mom 15, the DJ 15, the waitress 65, and 5 to the cage guy- total 100 out of 1000 or 10%. Seems fair to me.

    I hate percentages, too.

I think a minimum of $20 is totally fair for a DJ who's worth tipping at all. (Assuming you do stage sets.)

As far as housemoms... I've had minimal experience. I think a $10 minimum is fair if you're actually using her stuff or eating her food, but there have definitely been a couple of clubs where I've really resented paying $10 to a woman for simply being (occasionally) present in the dressing room. She wasn't even watching my stuff, it was locked up!
I suppose I could cope with a $5 minimum in that case, although I still wouldn't like it. (For perspective, I also once gave a housemom a $20 tip on a night when I only walked with $100, because she kept me motivated enough to make at least that, and gave me tips on other clubs I might fit better in. I'm not anti-housemom in principle, I just tend to usually find it a totally non-essential service.)

I give at least $5 to whoever walks me to my car, and $10 in a pot to spread around the bouncers otherwise sounds fair to me.

My favorite house fee structures are both based on what time you show up. One of the two clubs I'm thinking of has slightly higher rates on Fri-Sat. $5 or $10 an hour increments are fine with me.
I'm quickly approaching a point where a house fee over $50 for any reason except showng up insanely late is reason enough for me to not want to work there.

I'm lucky, the only club I work at where we have to tip the managers is onew here the managers are totally worth tipping. Otherwise, I'm not sure how I feel about that practice. I see the logic of making the managers want to see the dancers make more money so they get bigger tips, but the system itself just feels like it has too much potential for abuse. Managers should get salary or hourly wage.

Thanks for the input so far. To clarify a bit, I certainly agree with you I don't like % pools either, I think the entertainer should decide who has been more helpful to them and tip accordingly (within certain limits). The reason I was looking for a percentage was to get an idea of what dollar minimums and house flat fees should look like based on an average night.

    Thanks

Re: Question on Fair Percentage to Pay Out

i would say it depends on the set-up of the club...i work at two clubs and they are totally different. ill give you the breakdown of each

    club one: stage club only
stage fee varies by day of the week...also by day or night shift.
never totals more than $15. all tips go to the dancer. there is no minimum tipout to dj/doormen/barstaff/etc.

i usually don't tip the daytime door guy because he always falls asleep and NEVER helps me when i need him. and i ONLY tip doorguys that lookout for me. if i need you, and you're nowhere to be found...no tip my friend. some girls waitress as well as dance, so they tip the bartenders and managers. the girls who JUST dance do not.

**i think this club is able to stay in business with such a low stage fee is because it is set up like a sports bar with half-naked girls....lots of flat screen TVs playing sports...HUGE bar and a restaurant during lunch hours.

    club two:
payout is a flat rate. $180 per night, or $120 per night IF you are DRESSED AND READY to dance AT 6pm when we open. the $180 comes from your dances, NOT your tips. dances are 20/40/60. so in order to make your payout you can do 3 $60 dances, 9 $20 dances, or a few of each, along with some $40's. everything outside of that belongs to the dancer, except VIP. the club takes 20%, i believe, of all VIP fees. there is no set tipout for dj/bouncers. we do not have a housemom here and we can not tip management.

    hope that helped a bit

At my last club, it was two dollars per set to the DJ, and you would tip the bartender for how many drinks you got yourself (I usually only gave him a few bucks because I got pop) and a few more extra because she makes my ladies drink non-alcoholic at my request after three drinks.

What should house flat fees look like on an average night?

    $0

House fees are illegal but unfortunately almost completely uncontested. Do the right thing and refuse to bilk your dancers.

I, too believe that if there is going to be fees, they should be done in flat rate. I completely agree with Zabrina. The management/floormen/DJs are not working any harder just because we happen to be busting our ass. The majority of floormen at my club rarely ever do anything more than stand there. Those are the ones I have a hard time tipping. There are a few that will go out of there way to be helpful, such as pointing you in the direction of $$$, those are the ones that I am more than happy to tip.

    Flat rate!

I'm pretty happy with the system at my club (although less so recently because of the 5 dollar bullcrap thats happening in texas causing a rise in fees).

House fee: 20-55 depending on time of arrival
    DJ: minimum $5. I usually tip 15-20
Housemom: no minimum, I never use her stuff but I give her $2 to be nice
    Doorgirl/bouncers: no minumum, I usually give 5-10
Manager: no sanctioned minimum, but in practice most give at least $5, I usually 10
Valet: minimum $5 if you use his services; I pay 10.

I also dislike percentages! What should we be punished for doing well. That is how I feel at my club.

Dottie is right, you know. It's illegal. And exploitative.
