Default DJs Do You Pay Attention?

DJs, when it's slower do you pay attention to the type of customers that are in the club and sort of play to them? Maybe in some clubs the general customer base seems to like the same type of music or you're only allowed to play certain types of music, but my club's customers are very diverse and we're allowed to dance to anything.

Now, it's a Tuesday night and there's only three older white guys in the building. I'm thinking: "Good, they'll probably like some Stones or some Clapton," which I dance to a lot. Nope, the DJ plays U+Dat by E-40 and T-Pain and Duffle Bag Boy by Playaz Circle and Lil' Wayne. Both songs are in my files, I do like 'em, but why on earth play hip-hop for these old white guys especially when I've got shit loads of classic old-guy rock in my files? And you know what, later in the night when the place is busy and full of young guys, don't you know that that's when I get Paul McCartney and Wings and the Zombies. I love them too but certainly not for a young party crowd!!

Or again, it'll be nothing but some old white customers and the DJ will play me reggaeton, then after those guys are gone and some spanish kids come in, then the DJ will come and talk to me and be like: "Are you in the mood for some Beatles?" Where the hell were the Beatles when the old guys were in here? Now is the time for reggaeton! WTF? Am I just overreacting and being a picky diva?

Uhhh.. I'm pretty white.. annnnd I ain't no kid (but not quite "old" yet..) and I can't *stand* to hear Clapton or the Stones in a club setting. That will chase me right out the club.

I'd suggest maybe having your DJ chat up custies when its slow and ask what they want to hear. I've been camped out at the bar and had DJ's come up as they're passing, asking if I wanted some AC/DC or Motley Crue (prob cuz I'm white.. sigh), which I thought was cool. (though I had to correct him and ask for some Kanye or some old Digital Underground)

But then, I'm a bit diff..

Any DJ that works a club that's not heavily formatted should always be reading their crowd, slow or not. It's our job as Djs to constantly read the crowd and dancer and try to find a good balance. We should know who's drinking a lot at the bar, who's buying a lot of dances and who's tipping a lot and try to keep them all happy with music selection. Just my thoughts.

i would like to think i do pay attention, but if there are like you say three older white gentlemen in the club, i try to still pllay a variety of stuff but more of what i think they might like in the rotation, so if they are still there and a huge crowd of another type of people comes in, their music will still be there, but its not a huge transition into a more even rotation in the variety of music

    Absolutely.

There is a state of mind artists in all mediums can attain, the 'trance' state. Though it is probably nearly impossible in a stripclub--what with dancers, managers, customers, etc. interrupting with questions, requests, and crises on a near constant basis--nonetheless I have been there. Sometimes the interruptions can even be a part of the state of mind, but this is exceedingly rare.

Though if it weren't for having attained the state while drawing or painting, I might not have recognized it.

I generally pay more attention to the clientele when it is slow, for it is much harder to build up a crowd on a slow night than it is to keep them in the club spending.

You know you are burned right the fuck out when you don't care what the 8-10 guys are doing on an abysmally slow night in any club. It has been rare, but I must confess I have been there. Curiously enough, this has only happened in those situations where the rapport with the dancers was poor, an extremely rare occurrence, thank god. Having a good rapport with your fellow workers is the single most effective thing for getting through slow nights, at least where DJing is concerned.

you are a "bit diff" not that there's anything wrong with that. i've found that MOST of the "older crowd" responds very well to rock classics (zeppelin, stones, doors, etc) and that (in general) hip-hop/rap (if there's a lot of it) will run them off. of course, i think this is more true for dayshift. i think on nightshift the older guys tend to "accept" the fact that they are mixed in with a slew of young guys.

In general, older guys like older music, certainly. I think it's cool to see people transcend this, but it's smart money to be very aware of it.

I used to be under the impression that music didn't matter to the crowd. In fact, I used to go round and round with my old owner about this (partly because he didn't know the first thing about running a business, was an idiot, etc. long story). I guess I grew up as a DJ, realizing that not everyone in the crowd wants to hear 12 hours of Nine Inch Nails (which would be ideal for me, but...) The one thing that seems to work for ALL crowds where I live is classic rock. From Zeppellin to anything 80s hair, and a lot of the 90s stuff. Only a select few on the weekends like Hip Hop/R n B, or hard rock, or techno. I still try to play a variety, and as much as I hate hearing "Paralyzer" every 20 minutes on the radio and in the Basement Bar, I realize it's popular for a reason other than the radio stations said so. To play "U and Dat" for three older guys is--I think--a novice move by a novice DJ. But we all had to learn and grow up as DJs at some point. Some figure it out sooner than others.

He's been DJ-ing for quite a while! And we like each other and have a really good relationship so I know he's not doing it out of spite.

I was thinking about this, and decided that saying he was novice was a bit brash of me. I guess I'd need to know if those three old guys were doing anything besides sitting and staring at the show. I've had nights were I've tried to get the crowd going with anything under the sun, including country for all the farmers, and all we had was a gallery of eyes. At these times, I'll say "fuck it" and let the girls have some fun. If I can't get the crowd to enjoy it, I might as well try to put a smile on the dancer's face.

A DJ I can relate to. I agree 100%, if the guys are acting like assholes and I've tried everything, I play whatever the fuck the dancers want to hear, so long as I can stand to listen to it myself (LOL), and it won't get me fired.

Don't worry about sounding brash, it was an easy enough mistake, considering what he was doing. Regardless of whether the guy was a novice or not, the diplomacy displayed in your last post is outstanding. We need more people like you in SW.

AMEN man!!! I am newer to the Gentleman's Club scene but I have been DJ'ing for 12 years. I am always scanning the scene. If its 1 person or 500 its out job to bring the party to life. But the issue is that 95% of the so called entertainers are one tracked when it comes to music. Its hip hop r&b be or nothing. We run theme night like thursday is rock night. But low and behold who shows up to work but "miss 18 and more hood than a ghetto" and demands her style of music. But every week you have to explain to them that is that type of night and then they refuse to tip you out. Hey it ain't my fault but its my wallet hurting in the end even though its bringing in a different client base for them to make a living off of. Go FIGURE!!!!

How about party like a rock star or jay-zs new one roc boys, they have rock in the title. If I hear that again from a hip hop dancer i think ill go into convulsions..

But seriously, the club im at now is an all nude club with a very heavy leaning to the after hours crowd... Trying to bring in mainstream club guys and kind of run like an erotic nightclub atmosphere.. My new problem is now the rockers which is killing me because I love to play rock and at every other club was trying to move away from hip hop now I'm having to get rock girls to dance to hip hop and techno. I feel very dirty.

At a club I worked at, there was one DJ I really trusted just to pick my music. He knew what I liked, and out of that, he'd pick what suited the crowd. I don't know if you DJ's ever do this, but if a really heavy-hitting customer that he knew was mine came in, he'd put me up on stage right away, because I'd immediately take them back for dances once I finished my set. To me this was the best DJ ever because he was always aware of what was going on in the club and how to turn that into a way to make $$ flow.

I think a good DJ should recognize the crowd and always know who their best tippers are. And if she asks for a favor, make sure you accommodate her. If I'm going to break music format, I'm breaking it for the girl that tips me more than the minimum every night. (I'd even break rotation if she told me she was sitting with a guy and told me who was going to spend money. Again, I trust that she knows what she is doing, hence the reason she is able to tip me out well.)

I wish somebody would realise that a basic little investment in one day's worth of mandatory training to learn the basics of all the assorted music genres typically found in a club would totally pay off. I'm lucky, I can do pretty much everything this side of gangsta rap with fair confidence. (This kinda backfires though when I'm rockin something electronic and lovin every minute with my multiple artsy tattoos and emo hair which looks a little wierd.) It kind of depresses me to watch girls struggling with music outside their dominant genre purely because they lack the training. Common problem, simple fix...but it will never happen cause it requires an investment.
