Default PSA do not enter Good Housekeeping

online contest. Apparently they automatically place a subscription if you do. I got a bill and I was like "what in the world?" I just called and said ":I never did a subscription" she said "I don't see you did, oh wait did you enter a contest online?" I told her "yes" and she said " that was it" ohhhhhhh k. Anywa I don't have to pay it cause I obviously did not want this but just a heads up. I never even got anything but a bill also. That is how they get ya!

This form of fraud is becoming more and more common on the Internet. You go to a site where everything appears to be free, ask for this free information and, by clicking on the Send button, automatically sign up for a subscription to something. The subscription details are on the site, but sometimes in white on white or grey on grey so that they can't be seen properly.

This has been highlighted many times recently in Germany. You click through and get the information then, a short while later the bill arrives or, if it is one of the really backward companies, they send the final demand immediately and don't bother about the bill. Next comes the collection agency.

As soon as you get a bill, refuse it and cancel the subscription pointing out that you did not intend to subscribe and the subscription details were not evident. Keep a screenshot of the site and copies of your letter. After that you don't really need to do anything.

Here the scam has mainly be against youngsters, who don't know any better. I've recently taken two such companies to court over their practices, and their collection agencies too. They lost but, because the subscription terms can be found on the site, and the sites are outside Europe in many cases, the web presence is still there. Luckily these cases also feature in popular television programmes, and everyone and his dog gets to hear about them eventually.

If it's a free competition look for the costs before you click through. There is no free lunch these days.

This happened to my boyfriend who is very very very computer savvy and conscious (works in an IT department, dammit!!). They got him when he bought tickets on Fandango. They'll bill you every month for about $10 for some sort of membership if you're not careful.

Ughh! That's why I'm so skeptical of contests on the internet. How annoying.
