    Default Cloverfield

    Wow, what a BAD movie!

I just got back from the midnight opening night showing. And... um... out of the five of us who went, two came back with motion sickness and the other ones were full of tears, but the kind you get from laughing too much.

It was almost like they chose to adhere to the horror movie cliches but not in any remotely new or innovative way. It seemed a lot like the Blair Witch Project aesthetic but attempting to tailor it to being faux-low-budget. Errgh

It was a pretty packed theatre... but when the credits rolled there was just dead silence and then laughter from people (it's not an intentionally funny ending). Bleah!

Oh no motion sickness! I like to avoid a vomiting crown whenever possible, thanks for the heads up yo!

A big part of it is that they were advertising it with crazy viral marketing and weird trailers... and it turns out that NONE of the back story they used in the ads was in the movie. At all! Because there is no plot!

For instance. According to promotional webpages, one of the characters works for a Sinister Company (tm) that might be involved in the monster attack. In the movie, not only do they never mention it, there's not even ROOM to allude to a conspiracy or crazy machinations. But the movie doesn't work by itself, either.

Whoever makes that video camera, i want one! That sucker takes a licking and keeps right on ticking!

All in all, i liked it. But, then the viral marketing annoyed me months ago until i stopped paying attention to it. So that backstory was mostly lost on me anyway.

It's got a 77% on , so it's pretty well reviewed. Just try not to lose your lunch with the shaky-cam.

Seems Godzilla-esque to me... if this is true, I'll only see it if Mothra makes a special guest appearance.

A giant Kaiju moth followed around by 2 caterpillars fighting an oversized alligator, leave it to the Japaneese.

I don't think I'll see it. If they won't show me a crazy monster in the previews..grr. Just seems like a bunch of young 20 somethings running around from this "monster" no one can see.

Yeah, the ending's kinda cruel and fucked up. Life's like that, sure, but if i want life i'll turn on the news.

After not getting out last night to see this flick, I've had a change of heart. I think I'll spend my hard-won cash on "There will be Blood," which IS getting superb reviews.

Damnit! I wanted to see it! At first I thought it looked gay, then I got excited about it... IDK. Maybe my bf will take me this weekend so we can blow $20 on nothing.

Shaky camera? Oh noes! I almost puked during Blair Witch, had to leave the theatre and lay down.

I'm going to have to step in and agree with Madcap here.

The movie was pretty damned awesome. And I absolutely detest shaky camera work. The camera work and the lack of development in the characters (which really wasn't as bad as I think some have made it out to be) is absolutely necessary for the story they're going far.

I was definitely satisfied. In fact, it far exceeded my expectations.

    Go See It!!!

There are allusions to 9-11 but the movie does it in the same way that Godzilla was an allusion to the atomic bomb being dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

^^It's quite brutal. If it wasn't, it'd just be another cheesy monster movie.
