Breast implants don't last forever. Duh. Who didn't already know that?
*Not being snarky to you Sauske, sarcasm is directed at the article*
They didn't write about anything new. They just wanted to sell papers by writing an article full of common knowledge about boobies. zzZZzz

^^^ No, I do NOT think that the NYT used the subject matter to 'sell more papers...' that's silly. Isn't the goal to always sell more papers? The NYT covers many varied topics in the health/science field, and usually gives some interesting perspectives. I've never seen them use sexually explicit or taboo topics in a way that wasn't befitting for a newspaper to do... or in any way that somehow stigmatized those topics. This may not be new information to YOU, as you've done your research as a consumer, but to many, this is quite new.
I thought it was a great article.

“My plastic surgeon told me that my saline implants should last forever,” said Krista Schell.
...
“But with breast implants, informed consent is much more fuzzy because each doctor has his own perspective on how long they last, making it difficult for patients to realistically calculate the risks and benefits,” Dr. Goldberg said.
Some interesting quotes from the article referenced by the OP. I still will never ever (and I can say NEVER EVER) get a BA. I look long term.. I look in 5, 10, 20+ years time not just now and because of my long term outlook... I just don't want that "hassle" and extra health concern.

So many women / people dont know this and there are still surgeons who will tell their patients that the implants will last a lifetime and theres really nothing much to worry about. Im glad that this is changing though.
On the other side of the coin many people have no idea what the life span of their implants are even if they do know they dont last forever.
The reality is that many women take out loans to get their implants without thinking of the long term consequensies, many cant really afford repeat surgeries X amount of years down track when the time comes.
I quite liked the article. Dr Kolb who is mentioned on page 2 is one of Americas (if not the worlds) leading explantation surgeons.
Sort of related...

True dat. I wouldn't get implants until I've got some money socked away specifically to fix them should they go awry. UH...should I settle on good long-term health insurance FIRST before the BA or do most insurers not cover complications related to BAs? Just wondering....
My brother was cracking me up by telling me breast implants are classified as a "prosthesis"...![]()

I paid extra for a warranty on my implants. This only covers deflation or if I "pop" them by having some kind of accident. It covers the cost of the implants and part of the surgery fee for the repair.
Also, a few years ago I was denied health insurance because I disclosed I had breast implants.
I'm not sure what your boob warranty was, but for me it was a rip off to buy (Mentor).
They automatically come with one for 10 years. Even the extended one is only 10 years, just gives you $2400 instead of $1200. Either way, you're paying a lot of money if you need a redo. And it only covers implant malfunction. Not any of the other issues you might have.
basically, you're paying $100 for $1200 extra in coverage if one pops in 10 years. I talked to my surgeon about that and he says it's very unusual....definitely less likely than 1 in 12. I'd rather put my $100 on the roulette table. Better chance of getting $1200 worth of value out of it.
But anyway, they give you an implant warranty form right after the surgery. it kinda implies they won't last forever.
I don't understand the concept of not buying them because you will need to replace them. Do you people who feel that way not buy clothing and cars?
Agreed, it was slightly sensationalized but there's certainly way worse fluff in the NYT, basically any of the articles that are about "trends", which coincidentally always seem to be based around one of the author's buddies who lives on the upper east side.
That paper has such a mix of gold and garbage.

Agreed! The scenarios covered under the warranty are very, very unlikely. At the time ( seven years ago) I was paranoid and wanted to take every precaution. I wouldn't pay for it again.
More women seek revisions due to trends or what not, before implants are old enough to have any type of malfunction.
I never knew this information on implants (not having any), so I found the article informative.
What is disturbing is the length women are willing to go to "perfect" their appearance. Our breasts are special and susceptible to illnesses which could at worst, end our lives. They are much more that a pair of shoes, a car, or an ornament that we wear. Why should we have to continually do this to our bodies to the point that it borders on self-mutailation?
Sure, the idea of breast enhancement is great, but what makes going through the procedures and the pain and the suffering, perhaps at the cost of our health, worth it? Men, sex, acceptance? How does this contribute to our happiness?
