However, the thought of serial killers can be deeply disturbing to some people - the stuff of nightmares. I think you problem might not be the content of your site, but the 'fear' response it arouses in some of the people that read it.
In a way Google have shown you the way forward - wherever you end up, put a warning page first: "This site contains information on serial killers - if you find the subject matter disturbing do not continue". That way you can counter anyone complaining about the site by saying they disregarded your warning.

As a PS: have you considered looking at information on older serial killers? I don't know what it's like in the US, but in the UK a lot of information gets released into the public domain after either 30 or 75 years. If you review historical cases, that would let you look at the original documentation - not just books.
