    Uhm, this whole job thing....

So this is a kinda long rant but any input/advice would be appreciated. Am I being too princessy?!

OK, so, Im really not happy at this place. The manager really doesnt like me. I love the owner, shes a doll but the manager dislikes me for some reason. When I was hired I was told I could have Sundays off - I wanted at least 1 day a week to spend with the family. These next 2 weeks Im working both Sat and Sun. I also let them change around my schedule already because others were bitching about certain days. I wanted to seem cooperative, ya know? Today I asked if I could get a Sunday off in the next 6-8 weeks and Im told I work every weekend and Ill get 1 Saturday (not Sunday) off every 1-2 months. Im sorry, so I was lied to when the owner hired me or the manager just hates me and is making me work every single weekend shift. I already know this is not going to work.

We were asked if we would like our 2 days off together or seperate. I said "together please" One of the other girls, Rayna, said she doesnt care. So why do I get mine apart and she gets hers together. And on top of that WHY does the part time person get PRIME shifts. Weekday opening shifts and every other Saturday. I, personally, think the full timers should get the better shifts and part-timers are used as kind of a fill in for shifts. In that case shit, Id rather work 20 hrs instead of 30 so I can get the best shifts and still be able to dance on the weekends!

So Im not very happy - not to mention the clientel is not what Im looking for. Everyone came in for the $8.95 haircuts. Then they were rude on top of that. I heard one girl say about her dads haircut (who I did exactly what HE wanted) "I guess you get what you pay for". Well, I guess you DO! Go pay $30 and get a better haircut!

So, I got off at 4pm and went back to American Male. If anyone remembers, thats the salon thats a higher end place for men only that I was hired at in October. Well, I went, groveled a lil bit (ok, kidding) but I went and the owner, Mimi, was there and when I walked in she was like "I remember you!" so I gave her a rundown of the last few months (cept for the job I have now) and said I really would like to be able to meet with her about a job again. So, I have an interview/meeting on Thursday.

And thats my day. I really hope Mimi offers me a job again or at least keeps me in mind if one of her girls leaves. I really liked her and I think that position would be better than this one.

My hopes are up - Im not mad, just a little confused as to why Im getting screwed on shifts. Im being positive about this whole thing tho.

Am I being bitchy about the Sundays thing? Or do I have a right to be since when I was hired I was told Sundays off is ok?!

Well, I think when you were hired the owner and you had an understanding that you would have Sunday's off. I would have been assertive and told the manager that the owner and you had already agreed upon Sunday's off for you. After that he/she should take it up with her if there was a problem.

Babe, you can do better in my opinion. I think the American Male place sounds better.

Yeah, you are NOT a $8.95 haircut girl. You can and will do much better than that place! And you totally deserve your Sundays off. If it was negotiated when you were hired, that's BS they'd change it up on you.

my only word of advice is that your starting as the newb, so you may be last next to last on a lot of lists, ie days off etc. Just be prepared for it, as well, if you get American Male, and something happens, just grind it out for a time.

A major turn-off for any employer is seeing a person who keeps jumping jobs, but, hopefully this one will work out for you.

OK, I just got a call from Chanta wanting me to shoot Feb 3rd and 4th for her 2 websites. $2200. Im sorry, thats worth it to lose this job - thats TWO MONTHS worth of wages. I told her Id get the days off - and if I couldnt get a Sun and Mon off Id tell em I wont be there so not to bother booking me. Those are the two days I wanted off when I got hired but I was more insistant on Sundays.

Im debating on telling Mimi that I have a job now. If I do lose this job then theres no point in telling Mimi ANYTHING and Id be able to start whenever without putting in a two week to my current position.

Do a pro and con list.

What are the positives that will come from you being up front about your current employment? What are the negatives (you can forsee from your POV) from you being up front about your current employment?

Then make your decision from there and listen to your intuition.

Oh yea, and American Male is Closed Sundays and Mondays. Thats the PERFECT schedule for me, Tues-Saturday AND when she originally hired me she said shed make sure I was off by 530 because of childcare. She was so accomidating and I blew the job off. Well, I got really sick so I guess its kind of a good thing, Id have had to quit anyway (at least for a couple months)

It seems like American Male would be a good change for you. But don't burn your bridges. Make sure to make a good break from your current salon, if nothing else but to use them on future resumes.

    Best of luck to you!

Im going to go talk to the owner tomorrow. Tell her how I feel about the whole Sundays thing. I feel bad because I really really like her - I just dont like the negative feelings I get around the manager. Its too bad really but I want to enjoy where I work and being around the people I work with.

^ Yeah good idea about talking to the owner. You have a right to get Sundays off as that was one of the conditions upon taking the job.

You can do so much better. Good luck with the American Male job

As someone who has recently joined the day-walking legions working 45 hours a week during the day while still working at the club at night I will say two things.. 1) It definitely seems like you're getting screwed schedule-wise and, 2) you will find that people are still crazy even outside of nightclubs, sometimes even crazier than the good folks inside the clubs.

Hang in there it sounds like the new salon may pan out.

I'm so sorry it's not working out... I hope AM works out for you, too. I know you need to get your feet wet, but you're a rock star and you deserve to be in a salon that will at least treat you well. Good luck!

Small world - if Chanta is Chanta Rose, I knew her in passing 10 years ago in the UK when she was working as a dancer. (Zero chance she'll remember me).

Nice girl with a great sense of humour.

    Some thoughts....

    1) Take a deep breath before you talk to the owner - if we let things build up inside ourselves, we sometimes let it all come out in a rush. Better to rehearse what you want to say and let it come out calmly.

If you're going to talk to the owner, you want to come across as a person who's dealing with the matter calmly. If the manager you don't like reacts by trying to trying to rebut everything you've said at 100 mph when the owner talks to them, you've already half won the arguement.

    2) Be reasonable in what you ask - I'd say asking for the 2nd/3rd off is reasonable, if you give an undertaking to work the next few weekends without fail by way of return. Also explain that it's important to you to have those specific days and have a good reason why another weekend won't do.

    3) Tread carefully when you talk about what was agreed when you accepted the job - it's possible for you and the owner to have different recollections of what was said. If you then tell her she's made a mistake, and she honestly thinks she told you something different, you'll end up thinking the worst of each other.

Use a phrase like "My understanding of what was agreed about days off was..." If she thinks she said something else, then she'll hopefully say so in the same manner, and you'll be able to discuss any misunderstanding.

In the UK, you'd be given a contract of employment when your position is made permanent, so (if its the same in the US) you can quietly ask one of the other girls what that says about days off.

    4) If we want we can find things we dislike about everywhere we work, and if we focus on the things we dislike it builds up and up inside of ourselves. We then tend to 'vent' to our fellow staff, which ultimately will make it's way to the ears of your manager. (Someone will always tell tales).

It's best to focus on the positives of wherever you work - that way you can go in feeling happier than if you focus on negatives.

    5) Very good advice - sometimes it's better to stick at where we are and then move on at a time that will benefit the long term scheme of things. (Bearing in mind that all jobs will irritate us at least some of the time).

By way of example, the job I'm presently in has a shelf life as far as I'm concerned, but I'll probably move on in 12 months time. Means I've learned as much as I can, and I'll have been there a reasonable length of time for CV purposes.

OK - that's my thoughts and sorry if I've stated the obvious.....

    Hey Audrey:

I think it's great that some other opportunities have opened up for you as you were starting to get bothered by the current place of employment. And I think your instincts are good in going to the owner and letting her know in a diplomatic but firm way that you had a different understanding. To me, it sounds like deep down what was bothering you most was your treatment from the manager, so doing all of this will give you a sense of control again, and maybe take the manager down a notch. I have a feeling if you've been bothered about her others have, too, and the owner might begin noticing this after realizing that you don't have the deal you came in with.

There is something about leaving the comfort zone, the status quo, that stimulates new and unexpected opportunities. I think good things are ahead for you, rock star!

Yea its Chanta Rose! Shes one of my besteset friends ever! Shes such a doll. I lub her <3.

I spoke with the owner. She is soooo sweet. I mentioned how my confidence was a little low. I mentioned how I really like her and Mike (her husband) but theyre very different from the manager. The owner says she has already noticed the manager has 'her way' of doing things and has already spoken to her about it. I mentioned the Sundays, etc. We spoke for about 30 minutes and it went well. She said she thinks I will do really well once Im more comfortable and says she thinks I have great customer service skills. Gee, wonder what thats from! She also mentioned she did notice I was a little hesitant in the beginning when she hired me but she also saw great potential and really wants me to stay. Shes willing to work with me And while I was speaking with the owner her husband was like "Yea, Ive had some jobs I didnt think would work out. Sometimes they do and sometimes they dont. Give it a couple more weeks and give it a little time" He was nice, knew where I was coming from.

One of the other girls and I went out to pass out flyers to some local businesses and the manager came in while we were gone - owner spoke to manager who said she wanted to move me from the front of the store and put me near her so she can help me out while I learn which I liked. Im going to call the manager tonite and speak with her again.

So, in the end we decided that I would be pushed to part time and I will work either a Saturday OR a Sunday and only a couple times a month. I think this would be better for me since Im so new and dont think Ill be able to handle being super busy yet. So, I still have the meeting Thursday with Mimi from AM and we'll see how that goes. Now Im like shit, shoulda just talked to the owner first. But its good to keep my options open I guess.

This is great, Audrey--it sounds like you are opening more options up for yourself, not sacrificing anything, AND you'll have more control over the manager situation now--I'm glad the owner saw things your way. Way to go!

I only ever knew her at work, but she cracked me up with one or two of the stories she told. Definately a nice person.

I suspect the owner sees you as another straw in the wind. Managing people isn't easy - your manager may have the best of intentions but lack the 'people' touch. As the owner has already picked up on the problem, I suspect it'll sort itself out without any further action from you.

Indeed, if the owner is going to do something about her manager (demotion/removal) it's best not to be seen as a contributing factor. Smile, say nothing further, stay on the side of the angels and let the owner sort it.

It's probably a nice move on your part to speak to the manager. The great majority of people come into work to do a good job. It could be your manager is trying her best, but lacks the 'people skills' to get the best out of people. If you show a willingness to meet someone half way they generally reciprocate.

It's possible to manage 'upwards' as well as downwards. If you want specific days off, work out the best way of asking and pick your moment. (I know if my own managers are stressed out, that's not the best time to ask a favour!)

If you stay it might be an idea to agree a rough schedule for you becoming full time and the skills you'll need to brush up on the way.. It'll give you a plan to work to.

Life's a learning curve - you'll handle the next situation better cos you'll remember this one.

    Glad it worked out well.

    On the $8.95 haircuts...

FWIW--my father (may he rest in peace!) did both men's and women's hair back when men went to barbers and women went to beauticians. He was really good at what he did, and styled hair completely by cutting, no perms, etc.

After he had his first heart attack, he wanted to cut back on how much he worked, so he raised his prices so they were the highest in town. He thought this would drive some customers away so he would work less, but he would make more money from the rest so it would even out.

Instead, he got even more customers than before! He said that customers told him that if he charged more than anyone else, he must be the best in town, and that's who they wanted doing their hair!
