    Default Natural Self-Tanner Reviews

I shop at Whole Foods a lot more than I do any other supermarket and hence also get a lot of toiletries there. I'm trying one of the "natural" skincare lines' self-tanner, the Nature's Gate Upper Tanagement ($15/6 oz). I will report back with details.

Anyone else want to give their opinion on some of the natural lines? I have previously been a fan of Loreal's Sublime Bronze, but sometimes I really don't want to make an extra trip to Walgreen's.

I have previously tried the Alba Botanicals self-tanner and was not impressed. Not a lot of color, didn't last too long.

I got a self tanner that I LOVED at whole foods-- it was Kiss my Face

It has a weird consistency- you have to shake it to make sure it's really well blended or else it separates into liquid/gooey stuff. I totally love it though, it didn't make me orange, it made me actually brown.. like a light walnut color. It made my skin really soft and didn't smell like chemicals either.

Another one I like is a bronzer, not a self tanner. It's Nature's gate happy glow lucky- smells nice, feels nice, doesn't rub off too easily.

the "natural" self tanners actually look more natural than the mainstream brands. I've tried loreal sublime, all the neutrogena ones, clarins, etc. and they all made me orange- but kiss my face is awesome.

Does Kiss My Face leave streaks or blotches? I like the Sublime Bronze but I always wind up with orangey-brown smudges around my ankles and knees. I'm putting baby oil gel on my knees and ankles but it still leaves smudges. I'm tired of being pasty but I don't want to tan, and I'd love to find a tanner that goes on clean and even.

^ I never got streaky or blotchy with it, but I am super obsessive about putting it on and take probably an hour and a half to complete the entire process including exfoliating and premoisturizing knees, elbows and feet. It's really nice, it's thinner than loreal sublime so I think that might help a bit too.

I've tried everything WF/Wild Oats/New Seasons sells, and by and far the absolute best is Zia. Best color, absolutely no streaking, all vegan. It runs for $15-17 a tube, which is more than Alba, Jason, Kiss my Face, or Nature's Gate, but I feel that for the color and the amount of time it lasts, it's the best value.

The downside is that it is super stinky, so I like to exfoliate well, wear it overnight, and shower lightly the next day.

The way to avoid the splotches and smudges around knees, elbows and such is to not only apply moisturizer on those areas before applying tanner, but ALSO to make sure you apply less tanner in those areas. Otherwise you'll always have those uneven areas no matter what brand or type of self-tanner you use.

When I apply, I put the tanner on my legs, for example, avoiding knees and ankles. Then when I've smoothed it over my legs I'll skim whatever tanner remains on my (gloved) hands over my knees and down my ankles and feet. Same for arms - smooth it on the arms, avoiding elbows and hands, then skim remainder over elbows. I put a dab on some folded toilet paper and brush it over the back of my hands so I get a little color there, lighter than my arms but it doesn't leave a weird drastic color difference (same with feet). Your hands and feet don't tan as much as the rest of your body under sun or UV beds either so they shouldn't get as much self-tanner.

I like the micro mist spray tanners like Neutragena and Sally Hansen. I spray them on standing in the shower, wearing cosmetic gloves, and smooth over it with my hands. Doesn't take so long to apply and dries much faster so I don't have to spend 45 minutes standing around naked. I mean, I often run around the house naked, but not just standing around waiting....

bp, I remember you liking the Zia, but I like to put mine on and not have to shower again before going to work, plus Mr. W hates tanner smell so much. I used the Nature's Gate last night and, eh, there's some color, we'll see if another application improves my opinion.

^ I use Sun Laboratories if I want to tan before work without a shower. It works very well, is not at all orangey, and has a very pleasant fruit smell.

Cons: not sold at WF (I get mine at Ulta), $$$. It's a bit greenish for the first hour or so.

Even the Nature's Gate is a little too stinky for me to pull off without a shower. And the color isn't great, and comes off in speckles.. but it tends to be cheap/on sale, so I'll use it on top of another brand.

Where do you get cosmetic gloves? Or are they just regular latex gloves?

I've found that even when I'm super-careful, I get a smudge pattern from the ankle strap of my stripper shoes. I guess it's sweat messing up the tanner or something, but you can always see the outline of my ankle strap after the first night at work. If there's a tanner that doesn't do this, I'd love to know about it.

    Famous Daves..

It's only online ordering or Ebay, but this stuff is great.. No real smell at all, dries super fast, in just a few minutes, doesn't come off on clothes... Now I will say that, when I wear shoes/flip flops I will get some wear off, but not like when I use any other brand of self tanner... I'm not a dancer, but I do, do volunteer work, and in the summer the kitchen is extreemly hot and sweaty.. I have no wear off on my clothes, or especially bras...

Vinyl gloves work great, very durable and feel so much better than the latex ones. I get mine in boxes of 100-200 at Walgreens. They cost the same as latex, around $10-15.

I like the Fruit of the Earth brand. It's oil-free, not tested on animals, and it's cheap!!! I got it for around $5 for 8 oz. at Ulta.com. You do have to rub it in well and wait about 30 minutes before you get dressed, but I really like the color, value, and lack of smell.

I highly enjoy Dove's self tanning lotion. However, it sweats off around my breastbone. It is not white-bra friendly.

Gloves in big boxes at Sally's. One box will last me about a year. I don't notice the ankle strap line myself but I'm sure it's from sweating under the strap. I apply so little tanner in that area that I guess any smudging is really not noticeable.

I'd love a natural tanner that doesn't stink AND provides a nice-looking tan...

I used to get the ankle strap mark, but not so much anymore. I also avoid putting too much tanner in that area, and have learned to avoid the wrists especially. I've been using the L'Oreal Sublime wipes lately, but they don't last very long. I hate having to re-apply self tanner more than twice a week because it smells and takes up so much time.

I'm also naturally really really ghostly pale and I like a darker tan. I hate how some of them look when they fade. A tanner that doesn't make me look diseased would be nice. I loved SUN for it's color (although I do agree about the greenish tint) but it faded so drastically. And it's so expensive.

I LOVED the smell of the Aveda tanner but you have to layer it at least 3 times to see any significant color. Plus it's expensive.

So Kiss My Face is good or no? Does Ulta have any good natural tanners, or just "chemical" ones?

I didn't see the Kiss My Face last time I was there but I will put it on my list to try. The Nature's Gate is actually OK after a couple of applications this week. I'm also ghostly and tanning lotion just makes me not translucent. I would love to be able to tan but also am at high risk for skin cancer so have to be careful; sunscreen daily and all that. I would embrace the pale but swear that I make more money with some tan on me.
