Default MLK day and who observes it

This holiday is a very special to me. I have great admiration for Martin Luther King. He was a man with hopes, a wonderful vision for the equality for humanity and a conviction that many wish they had. He was taken too early and I wish I knew how come it is not celebrated in a bigger scale. Now my husbands company, one I worked for before him, celebrates most holidays but this one they don't even acknowledge and I never really understood why, can anyone explain why some just don't even bother?

Well, me personally? I tell my children of who he was and what he represented.

I guess I see it a bit more important than Labor day which they actually take off, perhaps I don't know what Labor day stands for anyway.

We dont celebrate it here obviously but I acknowledge it for personal reasons and we often hear about it on our multicultural channel news / tv station.
I think its good to celebrate MLKs life and what he stood for.

Who was he and what did he do to deserve a day that I should be celebrating?

Our park has a huge celebration in his name. Free food, music and a small parade. Yea around here it's a pretty big thing.

He was a great man indeed. It's nice to see all the people around me put their differences aside for a few hours and celebrate.

I hear music from my home now...it's noon. And the park will be packed. Cool event. Signs with his picture, name.

    Nice.

??? Seemed like a simple question...since no one will answer I looked it up on the Wiki; Martin Luther King Day - "Martin Luther King Jr. Day was founded as a holiday promoted by labor unions in contract negotiations."

I have never worked a union job so I didn't know...learn somethin new every day I guess!!

I think he (being a minister and all) would have prefered that a day remembering him be a Sunday.

^^I have to disagree. Sunday is G-d's day. It's a day to honor G-d, not MLK. Although MLK would want everyone to go to church and be nice to each other.

Over forty years ago, MLK expressed views regarding issues other than the Civil Rights Movement. Many of his opinions ring true today...

"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom."
    - MLK

"We will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."
    - MLK

"A nation or civilization that continues to produce soft-minded men purchases its own spiritual death on the installment plan."
    - MLK

My office is officially closed, but I am going to hold a meeting later this afternoon. No real opinion on the day.

while i appreciate what the guy spoke of and did for so many, it always irks me when some black people get all self rightious on his holiday. he wasnt just for black rights he was for equal rights not special rights. i wish more people got that.

Yeah exactly. And some people even end up rioting on this day, how ironic. And what a great way to uphold his legacy.

I know some of you are snapping at Tauries, but go read the Wikipedia article. He's exactly correct that labor unions had a great role in making MLK day an official holiday.

That's really a good question. What I don't understand is why we've gotten to a point where in order to celebrate a holiday, taking a day off from work has become a prerequisite. For example, as a federal employee, I get these ten days off every year as holidays:

    New Year's Day (1/1)*
Martin Luther King Day (third Monday in Jan)
Presidents Day (third Monday in Feb)
Memorial Day (fourth Monday in May)*
    Independence Day (7/4)*
Labor Day (first Monday in Sep)*
Columbus Day (second Monday in Oct)
    Veterans Day (11/11)
    Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday in Nov)*
    Christmas (12/25)*
*- considered a "major" holiday, all others are "minor" holidays.

FWIW, a great number of private enterprises do not observe ANY of the minor holidays (MLK, Presidents, Columbus, Veterans), and many businesses are increasingly staying open on some of the major ones.

As for MLK, he's probably one of my most admired historical figures, but I don't see where I'm honoring his legacy by taking a day off from work, much like I don't think I'm honoring our war dead by taking Memorial Day off. It would seem to me that a more befitting tribute would be to take MLK's message and incorporate it into how I treat others in my everyday life.

sabbath is one day per week to rest and rejoice in God's gifts. it doesn't have to be sunday specifically.

mlk was not nice when pursuing his goals of economic and racial equality, but he was a complicated guy, so it is hard to say what he would have personally wanted-- he may not have thought it appropriate to give him a holiday, perhaps.

i'm going to celebrate by posting a link to something other than his I Have a Dream speech-- his Letter from a Birmingham Jail.

I dont celebrate the hoilday. But I do go out and mentor to young adults. I try to give back as he did to the community. Like today I am a local park district teaching little kids. About black history, Having group session with young adults.

Oh didn't mean for this thread to turn semi ugly. I am not black, I just have admiration for the man. Hell I didn't even grow up in US and I still learned about him.

Oh well that's life I guess. I shall continue to keep his legacy alive through my children and hope they some day feel compelled to follow their dreams as MLK did. MAy he rest in peace.
