Default Health insurance how much do you pay?

I am wondering how much everyone here who buys personal private insurance on their own pays monthly for insurance. I'm finally decided to buy my own and my mother told me it would cost me 800 dollars a month which I think is just ridiculous, I have heard quotes of 350, 450 ect. But 800 is a bit too ridiculous. I hope this is in the right place.

well I figure we will be getting hit with an increase because my hubby just had a TIA and spent a weekend in hospital but our combined rate with Blue Cross and Blue Sheild is just under $200 a month as of now with a five grand deductible and a % split or flat fee on some things like perscriptions and doctor office visits. BCBS had several plans to choose from. I think our is the Blue Direct C plan

I used to sell health insurance. With my discount, I paid around $150 a month. I have a $1,000 deductible, but if you get into an accident (basically something that isn't your fault) they cut the deductible in half. Most young people don't like the company because most plans don't cover office visits and physicals... but if you're diagnosed with something serious, they're amazing and they never increase your rates because you're sick. Even though I quit in November, I still got the discount for 2 months, but now I will pay around $200. I don't mind, though- I feel like it's necessary for me and I'd be glad to have it if I broke my ankle at work or something.

Natalie, if it's just you that you want to cover and you don't have any health issues, there's no way you should have to pay $800 a month for coverage. Some companies are more expensive than others, but that's ridiculous. If nothing else, you can get a catastrophic plan (that just covers major emergencies and serious illnesses) for under $100. Better than nothing!

well, I voted in the under 300$ range, but I probably messed up your data a bit because I pay like $220 or something and it's for me and my baby. I think it was $175, for just me.

I can't vote because my company pays coverage. But as I've mentioned before, I broker health insurance through a big firm, and run quotes for $100-200 all the time.

They usually have a 2-3K deductible, then pay 50% or 75%. Annual out of pocket maximums are usually no more than $3-4K. You can also do an HSA with most plans.

HSA allows you to save monthly into a high-yield savings account. Then you can use it to pay for scripts, aspirin, copays, etc..pre-tax. If you are an Independant Contractor, you can then deduct the cost again on your taxes. Its the only thing that works this way.

    Something to look for:
    1. See how long your rate is guaranteed for. I try to get rates that will not go up for at least 24 months.
    2. Healthy discount: if you are healthy for 6 months, or a year...they WILL start throwing in a physicals and annuals for free.

Give it a shot. If you think you will be employed with benefits soon, I would look into short-term health insurance. Its relatively inexpensive, but you have to re-apply every 6 months to a year.

    ^^^Wow, ~$80 is a damn good rate.

Mine is just over $200/month, so I voted "Under $300." However, mine sort of sucks. It has a $500 deductible for office visits AND a $500 deductible for prescriptions. So basically, I have no prescription coverage unless I were to get REALLY sick and need a zillion medications. Last year I eventually got $35 back on prescriptions... woohoo, I guess. I also have no psychiatric/ psychological coverage, including meds. So the one recurring prescription I have is never covered.

It's the only insurance I could get, however, with my checkered past. Does anyone know if medical unpleasantries get wiped clean after 7 years, the way that credit problems do? If that's the case, I may be cheaply insurable by this time next year. That would be nice.

That is left to the discretion of underwriters. Diff. companies have different rules. Depressive and anxiety disorders will often result in a decline, or high-coverage rates. This is because mental disorders tend to manifest themselves in multiple symptoms and illnesses. Example: high anxiety can lead to high blood pressure=heart problems. Depression can lead to a depressed immune system and more frequent illnesses. FTR, these are not my definitions, I just have to deal with these things on a regular basis. So don't blame me for the rules.

You have a certain amount of privacy under HIPAA and your individual states. If you are not under doctor's care or medicated for something, you could technically leave it off of your interview. Doctors do not share databases. However, insurers do share a national database. The only thing they can really tell though, is if previous insurance applications have been approved, declined, or modified. Details are protected under privacy law.

Insurers may also request medical records from your existing doctor to help them with a decision.

    Sorry if off topic but...

Kat, correct me if I'm wrong, but insurance companies can actually deny you individual coverage but when covered by a plan by your employer they have to insure you no matter what, right?

When I tried to purchase an individual plan years ago I was denied twice.

Once because I admitted I had implants and the second time because I had allergies and asthma and had been prescribed expensive medications to treat it. It was so frustrating!

I pay about 115 for mine through BCBS. I paid 158 through United American, and it was utter and total crap. Didn't cover anything. I was previously denied through BCBS, but when I reapplied, and could show that I was currently covered, they accepted me.

I'm covered with Care First Blue Choice. I pay $105 a month...it's $10 extra for dental too. It's not bad....it's better than nothing. I have to get referrals for specialists (like derm) which is a pain but it's the cheapest I found. I have a deductable for regular dr's appointments and they don't have the best RX coverage but it's worth checking out if you want something simple that isn't too expensive. you can go to carefirst.com and get a quote if you are interested in the different types of coverages they offer.

Yes. This is because a business will pay group rates based on averages. The averaging factors would be gender, age, and geographic location.

Also, diff. employers cover different amounts. Most employers are required to pay 50% for their employee, although this may differ by state. Some employers pay more.

Hence, an older person at a company may pay significantly more than a younger person, but they would pay WAY higher if privately insured.

I would be laughed at if I tried to apply for private coverage now.

I pay $150 for a Blue Cross Blue Shield HSA. $100 goes for the premium and $50 to the savings account. It's definitely manageable, but my deductible is $2600. I hardly ever go to the doctor (except the gyno) so I never hit the deductible.

I pay about $160 per month for BCBS. I could pay less with a higher deductible.

Well, we don't buy health insurance anymore. It's a total rip-off. Why pay for something that leaves you with the vast majority of the bill anyways?

We put the equivalent of our health insurance into savings. But, when we DID have health insurance...we paid almost $1000 a month for it.

^^^You aren't concerned about asset protection if, God forbid, a member of your family wound up in the hospital? I was always told that's the primary reason to buy insurance... my mother kind of forces me to buy mine, I pay for it and she "manages" it (sends in my prescription receipts to the company, translates confusing, medical-jargon filled statements into Liberal Arts terminology, etc. [bless her heart, I love my momdude]) because she knows otherwise I'd be uninsured, as I hate paperwork processes SO MUCH. Anyway she sold me on the whole insurance thing by pointing out that if I wound up in a coma, all my savings could be drained within a week. Since she works in medicine, I am inclined to believe her... is she incorrect? I don't mean this as a challenge or affront to you, VG, I'm actually curious whether or not I am making the wrong choice by paying a ton for sub-par insurance.

I'm not worried about it. We have life insurance...we have homeowners insurance and car insurance. Health insurance is a rip off. Especially since I don't go to "doctors". I go to chiropractors, reflexologists, homepatic and naturopathic doctors. The insurance we had did not cover any of those doctors. They said that they would cover 90% of my homebirth with Adrian. The total cost was $3800. How much did we end up paying? Almost $3000. Why? Because the insurance company claimed that just about every charge for the homebirth was "not covered". So, why pay the coverage? As of right now, we have over $12,000 in our medical savings account. My next homebirth is paid for. We pay for our chiros, reflexologists, etc out of pocket. The medical fund is for emergencies only.

I'm not a worrier. And I guess that works for me. I'm not worried about getting some rare disease. I'm not afraid of germs and bacteria. I eat organic food, exercise regularly, get plenty of rest and water. I don't take prescription pills, I don't do antibiotics. I work on staying healthy so I never need to go to the doctor. So, I guess in my life and my family's life...medical insurance just isn't needed.

If you feel that it is important for you, then by all means, you should have it. But, in the last 5 years of paying for insurance. We used it 2 times. Once was Makayla going to the ER for dehydration (and that was a $1500 bill which we ended up paying the vast majority of) and the other was the homebirth (which, again, we ended up paying the vast majority of). Looking at it from that angle...being that they do not cover any services that we actually DO utilize on a regular basis...paying $980/month for 60 months equals $58,800. We "technically" used $5300. Had we just been saving that money (like we do now), we would still have $53,500 sitting in the bank and actually working for us by paying us interest.

I guess it's just a matter of personal perspective...and doing what you feel is best for you.

I'm under my parents health care so I have no idea what my dad pays but maybe I'm spoiled to say this but isn't BCBS shitty? I just got it (switched from united) and they don't even cover my birth control. My doctors visits cost double what they were and few meds they do cover I'm still paying 15 bucks for (it was previously 10). This sucks. I go to the doctor all the time and have quite a few meds I have to take continuously...but with the rise in food prices and whatnot, I can't afford to buy them now. UGHHH!

    /end rant.

Same here. I hardly ever go to the doctor and the $150 I put into it every month would more than cover what I need but she's convinced I'll contract cancer or something the moment I have a lapse in coverage.

And honestly, I'm afraid to go without now too. I was looking into switching companies and they added all types of charges and prohibitions because of my implants. I know nothing medically related to the boobs will be covered, but geez, deny me coverage? That seems harsh when I have no previous ill record. And I mean nada.
