I have asthma. I hate using my inhaler but I can't breath without it. Do those "air purifiers" they advertise on tv and in magazines all the time really work?

^ Yes. We have 1 in every room to help with how smokey it gets in the house and they helped a lot. And we have small cheap ones, I can't imagine how much better it would be if we had good ones.

Yes!!! My son is allergic to dust mites and we keep one running in his bedroom. It's amazing to see what is collected in the filter! Make sure you change/vacuum (depending on your model) the filter periodically otherwise it won't work (kinda like vacuuming with a full bag.)

I have one and I don't think it does jackshit. Maybe it needs to be cleaned?

^yeah it might. I vacuum my son's filter about once a month. Do you still have the user manual that came with yours? It should tell you how to pop the filter out and whether it needs to be replaced or what.

I loved that Sharper Image one-the ionic breeze. Sucks up the smoke. A little pricey, but has no bags or anything.

That's the one I have. My dad gave it to me. Does yours make zapping noises sometimes? Mine does. Oh, and I never smoke upstairs in my house, and seldomly smoke downstairs. But I do have lots of pet hair flying everywhere....

Would this work for things like mold allergies? Its so damp here that I'm constantly battling the mold and I have a chronic cough because of it.

Kat, I took this from the sharper image website:

Never buy a disposable filter again — save $100s! Airborne contaminants are trapped on stainless steel collection blades that slide out for easy cleaning. In its updated configuration, two inert driver blades are positioned between the three charged collectors; this improves the particle capture rate over previous models.

So yes you should probably clean the collection blades.

Air purifiers remove contaminants from the air including mold spores so I think you would probably benefit from one.

Yep. Made zappy sounds a lot. I used to live with heavy smokers and you have to clean it a good bit. Pet hair might do the same.
