Exclamation Help me put a resume together ???

Oh man I am so SO out of practise! Never thought I would come across the need/desire to do so for awhile.....

Here is the position I am seeking to apply for:

    Assistant Rehoming Team Officer
    Permanent Position – Paid
    Saturdays 10am – 3pm
    November to April

Stop the Press!!! This is what you have been waiting for!!! Animal Welfare League is looking for a dedicated retired or semi-retired person, or someone who is not looking for full time work, and who would like to do some flexible part time work as part of our Rehoming Team every Saturday from 10 – 3 p.m. to assist during the busy parts of the year from November to April. Yes, this is a paid position!

Preferably also available to be called on at short notice if Rehoming Team Officers are away sick, or for blocks of a couple of weeks to help cover staff on leave.

If interested, please send an email/resume to [email protected]

    Duties:
    ·Conducting pre-surrender and pre-adoption interviews
·Helping new owners select appropriate animals and introducing these animals to owners
·Helping customers with their inquiries regarding adoption and surrender of animals
·Working on other duties as required by the Rehoming Team Leader

    Essential Qualities:
·Must be comfortable with entering data on computer
    ·Demonstrated good people skills
    ·A passion for helping animals
·Ability to problem-solve and find creative solutions
·Confidence in handling both cats and dogs, including large dogs
·Energetic and physically fit to be able to cope with busy periods
·Willingness to get to know the characteristics of the refuge animals by researching on AWL Qld website or visiting prior to Saturday.

    Desirable Qualities:
    ·Some dog training experience
·Some knowledge of dog and/or cat breeds

I am comfortable with data entry as I'm self employed and have to do so on a daily basis by interacting with various software programs from checking email, to entering data into MYOB. I can also touch type (will do a speed and accuracy check so I can list my speed and accuracy).

I'm going to say I work in promotions as well as waitressing thus demonstrating on an almost daily basis (whenever I work) interacting with people of all types of backgrounds and levels.

A passion for helping animals? Hmm... could I use my vet as a reference? I ask this as he has seen first hand what I have done for Bibs (before I had to make the decision to help her transition).. and what I continue to do with Puddy (he's diabetic). Then there is the fact that I allowed my flatmate to adopt Puddy due to him being in a dire situation (he was going to be put down if he couldn't find a home). As well as the pet sitting I am currently doing for a friend's girlfriend's cat (Lucky) as she was stressed out about how her parents who were originally pet sitting were treating her cat. She trusts me greatly with Lucky.

Ability to problem solve and find creative solutions: is part of being self employed and just living life. How can I use this to show this ability? How should I word it?

Confidence in handling cats and dogs, including large dogs. Unfortunately, due to working more and working of a night I have not been able to get into the shelter this month nor last month. Last time I was there was back in November... however I am confident in that ability... esp. with cats. Large dogs? That just comes with experience which I am willing to do/seek by putting in more hours as a volunteer since I do not own a dog. I want to make it clear that if I am successful in applying for this position, I will do my utmost to increase my experience with handling large dogs before the position commences in November.

Energetic and physically fit? I want to use my hobbies/interests to show this: hula hooping, pole dancing, dancing in and of itself. As well as say somehow that due to where I live I also have access to a gym which I can use (or I will say I do use even tho' I haphazardly use it) often.

The willingness to learn the animals prior to working on the saturday? Easy! How can I use my myspace profile ( www.myspace.com/vee_gc ) as a way to demonstrate this ??? Can I just say that whilst I do not have the ability at all times to be able to volunteer often due to having to work nights a lot I do visit the website often ?? That it is rather easy for me to do so?

As for the desireable qualities: how can I say that I am very open to learning and being trained in these areas before the position commences in November?

I want to show that whilst I am not the perfect candidate, I am very willing to learn and do what I need to do to become successful at the position when it commences in November.

I want to also emphasise that I am 5 minutes "down the road" so it makes me real handy for any last minute work that they may require of me in this position.

    PLEASE HELP!

I think it sounds as though you would be a great candidate for the job.

This is how I would go about applying for the position:

I think a lot of what you stated above would be best said in the cover letter.
Make sure you format the letter correctly (just google search it if you aren't sure). Begin with something like this:

    Dear Sir/Madam,

I wish to apply for the assistant rehoming team officer position as advertised in the (name of publication) on (date). Being highly passionate and very interested in (specific area), I feel that I could contribute greatly to the organisation and be the best person for the position.

Then go into recent things that you have done including volunteer work at the shelter (make this stand out). Say what you have learnt from this. Then go into waitressing and promotions work and talk about the people skills you have gained from these positions. You could also speak in this paragraph about being an active computer user (maybe don't mention to use SW ) and say that you are very competent and have gained skills such as......

Conclude with how local you are, which would mean that you will be able to be contacted at late notice and that your current work is also very versatile.

Final paragraph should be something like this:
I have included my resume, with referees to give you additional information about myself. I would appreciate an interview to outline the skills I can bring to this position and can be contacted on (phone number) to arrange a convenient time.

    Yours faithfully,

    (Full Name)

Also ensure the letter is only about 3/4 of a page and make it concise and to the point.

For the resume, this is a simple outline.
Begin with a title page, where you list all your details in the centre of the page. By making this professional this will also emphasize your computer skills.

Start the actual resume on a new page.
Then list categories such as your educational background, employment history, volunteer work, achievements, personal qualities, interests and referees. This should be no longer than two pages and set out in a clear, large enough font. Usually two references is appropriate. I definitely agree your vet as a professional in the industry would be great and maybe also a recent previous employer or teacher, or maybe somebody at the shelter you volunteer at.

In the resume the personal qualities, interests and skills can help you demonstrate your passion for animals and abilities such as computer knowledge (eg: MYOB, competent internet abilities, outlook express, microsoft office, etc). Also you can list personal qualities such as; well spoken, excellent people skills, highly motivated, enthusiastic, reliable, dedicated and hard working, to address other aspects in the application.
Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

I received notice about the position being on offer due to being a volunteer at the AWL. The volunteer co-ordinator, Kerry, sends out an email once a month giving an update on the next month's activities as well as where volly help is required, etc.

Thank you aussiebelle .... I've also received a lot of help elsewhere from this post.. so thank you to those people as well
