Default little rant about my stripper pole

about a month or two ago i purchased the lil mynx rotator pole. perfect since i have a stationary and rotating pole at my club. anyway, i buy everything a need to put up my pole.. stud finder, drill, etc etc.

i use my stud finder to locate a wood beam in my office ceiling. but to no avail. it beeps, i drill, and i get metal. so i start to wonder if because my apartment is newer, they no longer use wood beams. i was so confused. couldn't find any info about ceiling beams online that helped.

so i did something i shouldn't have done. i just threw my pole up into the dry wall because i was going to be damned if i wasted my money and couldn't have fun on my pole. it worked well for the time being except it started wiggling and i got a quarter sized hole in my ceiling.

so tonight i decided to take down my pole. i grabbed a flashlight and looked into the hole. and what do you know? right next to this huge hole, is a beam of wood. i scratched my head for a good minute and grabbed my stud finder. i used it over the beam, and nothing happened. i used it over the metal beam and it beeped and lit up. this stud finder is supposed to be able to detect wood and metal beams. piece of poo that it is.

so to make a long story short, tomorrow i am going to have my boyfriend help me correctly install my pole. i'm really excited about having a safe pole. but i'm not too excited about repairing the hole. haha.

Thankfully the hole isn't bigger, it should be pretty easy to patch.

We had a bit of patching to do with the first pole I had in a house I was living, after some big guy was trying it out. A lot of the plaster around the edges was loosened by the vibration and fell out.

Glad to hear you will be getting it installed more securely--have fun on it!

My stud finder doesn't work either. We just had to drill a bunch of little holes until one of them produced sawdust, and then we spackled over the extra holes. Such a pain, but it's worth it to have a pole at home!

Just an FYI- the reason you may have had such trouble with your stud finder is that it doesn't actually detect wood- it detects the nails and metal fixtures in the wood. It's basically a magnet on a relay with a beeper. (I used to work in a hardware store, and we had people call 'false advertising' on it all the time. Frankly, I agree...) But yay for correctly installed poles!

ahh! good to know! but now it makes sense. kind of is false advertising. i was expecting to drill into wood beams right away, and was scratching my head for the longest time. haha
