I'll be there Thurs-Sunday, and am looking for something off-site on Saturday night, after my keynote. Actually, leaving the venue is a great idea because the talk isn't done and I'm pretty worried it'll suck.
Oh, yes, I"ll have rented wheels.

Go down to Islamorada, if it's still there, go to Woody's. It's a strip club with a house band, Big Dick and the Extenders.

OMG OMG OMG!!!!!
Are you scuba certified yet???
Scuba, snorkle, (Key Largo is kick ass for diving of any sort), eat yummy sea food, sight see.... etc. I'm so jealous! You're gonna be toasty warm!

Awesome! I've always wanted to go to The Keys. I will someday.![]()

Hey, thanks for asking!
In fact, I had my 2nd class just last night. It was my first time all suited up with a tank and breathing underwater. Okay, we were just 15 feet down in a large pool, but I absolutely loved the experience and took to it like...well, ya know.![]()
So to answer your question, I'm a number of classes short of certification. But I'll be bringing my mask and snorkel with me, along with my tennis racket and shoes. I really hope I can use all of this stuff. The last two times I dragged my tennis gear cross country I didn't get to use it, not once.![]()

^this is why I much prefer scuba classes that finish up in a weekend and then you have to do your check-in dive. spreading it over so many weeks would frustrate me.
A big ol' public thank-you to Sophia!
I did the Pennekamp Park snorkel trip on Sunday afternoon.
It was my first time in a wetsuit, too. (This was a "shorty" suit--the legs just go to midthigh.)
Anyhow, because wetsuits are positively boyant, and because the tour operator didn't permit/provide weight belts (and they made us wear deflated life vests, besides), one became little more than a floating cork above the reef. I tried to dive a couple times but quickly realized it wasn't worth the effort.
The reef, which in places was only a few feet below us, was full of fish and live coral, which was nice to see after my experience in Key West, where the coral looked like an urban parking lot.![]()
There were a bunch of 5 ft (?) long silver baracudas hanging out on the reef, who were as unrattled by us as fat house cats. The boat captain explained after the dive that these critters are used to tourists. A group from the boat checked out a big and peaceful nurse shark. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see it.
The only scary moment was entering the water and seeing dozens of jellyfish. But if you kept your eye out, it was easy to avoid the clusters of them.
In summary: Great fun. Can't wait for my full-on scuba trips!![]()
