Default White splotches just about everywhere on my skin

Okay, I've tried looking up info everywhere, but can't find any. I even showed a couple of dermotologists my splotches, and they say that they're caused by fungus, and that using dandruff shampoo, they will go away. Tried that...didn't work.

Does anyone else have light splotches on their skin, mainly around their stomach area? I noticed they appeared around the time I stopped tanning after tanning TOO much (an hour a day)...yes, I know...HORRIBLE.

Anyhow, I don't think I have vitiligo...it doesn't look that extreme. The blotches are actually more faint. I've had these things for about 5 years now, and have no clue what to do about them. I usually use self-tanner, but the kind I just used made them worse!...which is what I guess made me want to post this just now...

I've heard its fungus that is spread from using the tanning bed. You can buy over the counter antifungal creams at any drug store to get rid of it. Tanning salons don't like to talk about this but its a fairly common occurrence.

Well, I've made an appt with the doc just in case the selsun blue doesn't work again...(i tried it awhile ago with no results, but i only used it to wash my body, as opposed to leaving it on the spots for awhile and then washing it off).

In the meantime, what's the best way to cover up the spots on my stomach? I would use dermablend or something, but I'm afraid that when giving lapdances, it will rub all over the person's shirt :-/

You should get something strong anti-fungal from the drugstore and not just wait around for the appointment.

You can pass that fungis to other girls and customers at the club too, I think.

I worked with it for about 5 or more months in the same club as other girls, using their same tanning bed....it wasn't contagious.

I've also worked in other clubs for several months in a row and nobody said anything.

If it is what I'm thinking it is...tinea versicolor...then it's definitely not contagious...also, my bf of over a year has not gotten it.

It isn't contagious. It is fungus. When I used a tanning bed regularly I also got the same 'effect' thus the reason I stopped and won't be going back any time soon.... I prefer to use nature's tanning bed (aka the sun).

I have tinea and it's not contagious, just sucks (I've also never tanned). It's better when I keep up on vitamins. You can put athlete's foot cream on it, or tea tree oil. The candida diet also helps, I've heard.

I had this problem for years. My tinea versicolor was very resistant to Selsun, plus Selsun smells like rotten eggs. I tried Nizoral as a wash, and leaving it on my skin, but that can make your skin irritated. When you go see your doctor ask him to prescribe Ketoderm cream. The active ingredient is Ketoconazole which is the same thing in Nizoral shampoo. They can also give you antifungal pills. The antifungal pills did not work for me, and I ended up taking, I think minocycline which is not the normal treatment. This Ketoderm cream, along with the antibiotic were the only things that worked to clear up my skin after years of having a splotchy back, and at a few points a patchy chest and neck as well.

Apparently, some people are more prone to having the fungus show up on their skin. Even though the fungus may have been there for some time many people only notice the splotchiness after they tan because the affected skin does not tan. The chance of it reappearing is much greater for me when I tan in a bed as opposed to in the sun, so I try to avoid indoor tanning. Good luck!

Dont worry, I have that on my stomach too.Its called tinea versicolor. It's actually a bacteria from the yeast family that is normally found on everyone's skin. However, on people like you and me that bacteria seems to overproduce its self too much causing discoloration of the skin. The sun can't tan the area were the bacteria is active, only the skin around it.That's probably why some people notice the spots after they have been in the sun, but it is not caused by the sun. This problem is also not contagious because it is hereditary. But it can spread on your own body if left untreated. You can use dandruff shampoo on the area if you only have some spots. The key ingredient that works in the shampoo is selenium sulfide. Some Head and shoulders bottles have selenuim sulfide just make sure to check the label. You can either wash the area in the shower with the shampoo, and let it sit for ten minutes, then rinse off.Or use the shampoo on the area as a lotion overnight.Do this everyday for a couple of weeks just to make sure the bacteria is under control. The skin color will not come back right away though, even though the bacteria is dead.It will take months unless you tan.You can also get selenium sulfide lotion from the derm and use that overnight instead.I have been using that for a year now, because my case was soo bad.But I recently switch to a one dose pill with is also affective.I also find that exfoliating the area once in a while speeds up the time it takes for the skin color to come back.Oh yeah and you must wash your hair with the shampoo once every week or once every other week to keep the problem from reoccurring, because the bacteria originates on your head.sorry for the long post but I think I can write a book about this stuff because I've been trying to get rid of it for soo long.Good luck!

oh one more thing.Do not put lotion on the area. The bacteria lives off of moisture including sweat. So I think dermablend would not be such a good idea.

If the shampoo isnt working for you, you can also use OTC yeast infection cream. The one for external use. I put it on like lotion whenever I get this and leave it on overnight...it usually clears it up within a few days.

Haole Rot... that's what we always call it in Hawaii, and I've wondered for years what the "scientific" name for this fungus was... so it's kind of cool to learn here that on the mainland it's known as Tinea Versicolor.

As I've seen a ton of Haole Rot (it flourishes in tropical climates) and what it takes to make it go away, I'll share what I know even though part of it has already been mentioned above.

First of all, it does take patience because just like many other fungus' it takes a while for it to die. Then when it does remember that even more time will pass until you regain your original skin color, because as you try to tan the white spots you are also tanning the skin around them that they contrast with.

In order to kill it you need to apply Selson Blue to your dry skin and your scalp at least a few times a week, if not every day. Let it sit for about 15 minutes and let it dry, then you can take a shower and wash it all off. The length of time that you need to continue this depends on how far the fungus has progressed on your body. However once you know you have killed the fungus, don't keep using the Selson Blue unless you have another outbreak in the future. Just like any other medication, you don't want to be using it unnecessarily on a daily basis because you don't want to work up a resistance to it.

To prevent having to deal with this again check yourself periodically to see if any of the spots are returning. If you notice any spots coming back immediately do a few treatments, because the earlier you catch it the less visible it is and the easier it is to get rid of. Using baby powder to keep yourself dry in moist environments can also be helpful.

What you eat can also help prevent outbreaks. Include lactic acid fermented food like yogurt in your diet; it contains acidophilus which helps to maintain bacteria levels and helps to prevent the spread of infection. Incorporate garlic, which is a very good antifungal agent. And of course avoiding too much white flour and sugar always helps with health and body issues.

Finally, don't worry! If you're patient and you do the Selson Blue properly you will definitaly beat your Haole Rot, and by staying aware you can refrain from having to deal a big outbreak again. Good luck :-)

i got that from birth control pills. i had it all over my body, as soon as i stopped taking my b/c it went away.

the splotches were all over my body and i looked like a cheetah! it was expecially noticable in the black lights, bc they glowed! SO weird!

i never tried the dandruff shampoo trick...
