    Default paying for movers

i want to hire some people I guess I'll just put an ad on craigslist, for movers. I guess I'll need two. How much do you usually pay them? I'm moving from a third floor walk up to a place with an elevator so it's really less work that way.

Oh boy. They can be rather expensive, usually at least 50-80 bucks an hour. At least that's what the professionals cost. You'd have to negotiate with amateurs and they're much more likely to break your stuff. Try the phone book? Recommendations from friends or family?

i did the philly craiglist and yeah the avg was 50-75/hour, i thought that was pretty reasonable. i always use movers when i move its way less stressfull that way-worth every penny
These days I like to count my money. I like to wash it delicately and iron it. Sometimes I dry it with some bounty to make it all nice and cuddly. I love my money... did I say that out loud?

I have to ask, why would you look in Craigslist?

Just look in the phone book or yellow pages to find a reputable mover in your area.

We paid for a mover when we moved into our house. They came with a gigantic truck, loaded everything into and out of the truck and also had insurance in case anything was damaged while in their care. Some things were damaged and a serviceman was sent out to repair the damaged items free of charge.

If you have a small place to move the CL option would be easier. If you have stuff you would want some sort of care insurance for then a company would be better.

I did the CL option once and it was just a matress, couch and dresser and he was 50/hr.

it depends if you are renting the truck or not. if they are providing their own, then they obviously deserve more. Typical guys of CL doing it for cheap don't have trucks.

I paid some college kids off CL to do it and they were great (and way cheaper than pros)

call a mover out of the phone book, their prices adjust accordingly with your needs and they are more reputable than some random CL person.

i can give you the number of the company i used, i used them two times, once just moving across towson and once from towson to my place now. they charge by the number of items theyre moving instead of hourly or by distance, so if you dont have a lot that would work out well for you.

....not to mention a lot of the 'in the phone book' movers (thus professionals) carry some sort of insurance for damage to your stuff included in the price.

My dad called the BBB on the last moving company we used because they undershot the estimate by 8 hours and it ended up being INSANELY expensive (like 1600 dollars).

While the OP may have luck on Craigslist, it is usually more advisable to use a company with insurance or pack their stuff really really carefully. If you do use CL, buy packing tape and cheap blankets to wrap the stuff you can't box yourself. A company would do that for you but that's one of their expenses!
