Default Not taking Federal from taxes?

Ok my b/f has been at his job for about 4 months. Yesterday he noticed they havent been taking federal out. But his coworker has been paying Fed...same job, same amount of time. He pays child support, does that make any difference? Does this mean he'll owe a bunch of money since they havent been taking it out?Im totoally clueless about tax stuff...so im sorry if this sounds dumb as crap.

Also..he's claiming Azaia.I havent done taxes in yearS so I probably owe a million.I dont even know,as a dancer, how to do it,but I know a women who prepares just for dancers and Ill go to her. Whatever money he gets back is mine too,so thats why Id let him claim. It would be dumb for me to claim and screw the whole family. Im only doing my taxes because I have to,and for proof of income so I can get a car.I know Ill get nothing back, which is why Im not claiming her. Dumb?

If I'm reading your post correctly, you're saying that your BF's employer has not been withholding federal income tax from your BF's paychecks ? I'm not sure how this is even possible, other than an interpretation that your BF is working as an independent contractor rather than an employee. Either way, federal income taxes will be due. And any federal tax money due that has not been previously withheld from paychecks and sent in to the IRS by an employer will have to be paid out of pocket by your BF.

As far as claiming Azaia as a dependent, as long as your BF meets the criteria of providing more than 1/2 of her financial support the IRS really doesn't care (as long as only one person actually claims her). In terms of 'value' of the dependent deduction, whichever person with the higher amount of taxable income will get the greatest financial benefit from the additional deduction.

He is claiming himself EXCEMPT on his W-4. Its totally legal, Melonie. I do it all the time when I'm about to get a smaller paycheck and want the extra cash.

He needs to go to Human Resources and change his withholdings. I don't know how many Excemptions he can take, but your CPA should be able to help.

Oh, and if he only worked there for the last 2 months of 2007, it shouldn't be a big deal, especially if he can claim a dependant. Make sure he changes it moving forward. If he owes less than $1,000, IRS doesn't charge interest/penalties.
